Using a shotgun for self defense in a house is a great way to kill your loved ones 4 rooms over, and destroy your house.

Intermediate rifle cartridges such as 5.56/.223, 5.7, etc are much safer, as they destabilize after only a layer or two of drywall, and lose their lethality.

I've seen animals shot with a 20 ga. that kept right on running like nothing had happened. When they were shot with a 12 ga. they stopped dead in their tracks.

They are usually together but not mixed. Smaller shot goes on top in jungle loads to disrupt foliage and minimize it deflecting the buckshot.
