Ive seen a discovery channel show about an abalone diver who carried a revolver for great white shark protection. Is a revolver or a glock a better option than a sturdy knife like (see pictured)? Is there a handgun/caliber that travels better in water than typical 9mm ammo?

The HK P11 is designed to be used underwater, shoots flechettes rather than conventional bullets.

I'd rather have a gun than a knife. 9mm will travel a few feet underwater. While it's not much it's better than arms reach and better effect on target than a knife. Even if the target was at knife range I'd rather shoot than stab

in addition to the HK P11, there's also the Russian SPP-1M for underwater use as well. The long heavy bullets travel further in water.

Knife. You don't have to be faster than the shark, just faster than the dive buddy you just slashed.

there's also supercavitating ammo which is a fairly recent creation. It's not common though, it seems still in the prototype or selling phase, and I haven't seen any supercavitating pistol ammo.

the tip of the bullet creates a bubble that reduces the resistance on the rest of the bullet

They make a specific tool for this, don't they? It's called a bang stick. It's essentially a 12-gauge shell on the end of a pike. Drive it hard into your shark, the shell goes off, viola, your shark has sprouted a large ragged hole.

I'm kind of wondering if the underwater 'boom' would probably be more annoying to the shark than the projectile, also have to consider the effect on the guy pulling the trigger.
Seen great whites when I was in Perth and all things being equal if a big one of those has latched onto you, might be better off sticking it in your ear and saving yourself a lot of misery as I don't think a pistol round is going to do much. They're just so fucking huge!

Powerheads where basically a much more effective underwater shark-dissuader and they're a 2-3ft length of steel with a shotgun cartridge or large pistol round in the barrel on tip, striker on the end of the rod. Poke=boom
>>
>>34473957
can you just dive where there is no sharks fucking pussy?
>>
>>34473957
I would have to imagine that a large caliber revolver would be infinity more reliable for this use than most semi autos
A lot of semi auto pistols have issues being shot underwater from what I've seen. From a bunch of stupid durability test videos

It's like you guys aren't even taking this seriously.
>>
>>34474408
it's the gas that gets them, seaway bangsticks were supposed to blow sharks apart and that just used high powered blanks
>>
>>34474408
i have one of these, and i'd like to mention that people shoot themselves with them more often than sharks.

It's almost like you didn't read the art of war.

Why dive with shark when you can genocide them?

The ones I was more familiar with had a shotgun round in them, generally something like 000 or BB's and a few of the really old school ones from the 1960's had a .303. Course a few of them got banned in some areas because people where arbitrarily murdering the non-bitey varieties of sharks to extinction and >>34475214 says they're generally more of a hazard to anyone than much actual use.

Biggest shark I've seen was probably somewhere between 13-15ft long, sitting in our piece of shit infate-a-date dingy off the side of a submarine trying to dock it and the guys in the conning tower just going really quiet, hoping we wouldn't notice.
We noticed
Snap voted that we'd throw our most useless corporal to go fight it while the rest of us swam for it
