Yeah, I was wondering if you guys had a general sense of a decent price to pay for a serviceable sks, and what to models are generally serviceable. Do you guys have like a "my first sks buyer's guide" or some pointers? I really don't know where to begin.

Like Mosins for example- Finnish ones are nice, but expensive. A 1943 Russian one could be ok if you get matching serial numbers/barrel isn't shot out, but don't pay $300 for one of those.
>>
>>34482696
I bought my norinco earlier this year for $375 USD. Not a bad price considering the condition. But yeah they usually go for between 400 to 500 these days. Chinese ones priced closer to 400. Prices have gone up in the past few years. Still a much better value than the Mosin IMO,

Got an SKS where it didn't come with the original mag and instead came with a banana mag. Problem is, if you fully load the mag, it'll disengage from the gun, and the only way to keep this mag in place is to hold it by the mag and push up while firing, which causes your aim to go fucking nuts.

So here's a question. Is there a respectable stock replacement that I can purchase that will fit a different mag or the same mag I already have, or is there something I can do to help the magazine stay in place.

I don't have the original mag and I would like to keep it mag fed mainly for cleaning purposes since I've heard horror stories about this things slam firing while dirty.
>>
>>34483213
>but y tho
Because in Canada, semitautomatic rifles such as an sks, are limited to a 5 round magazine capacity. There are companies that make 10 round 7.62x39 pistol magazines.

Restored my SKS on /k/'s advice from completely Bubba'd condition to this with a new stock, bayonet, and handguard. I'm undecided on the magazines. It's faster and more convenient to use the duckbills, but last time I was at the range I had about three or four misfires out of 150 shots fired.

How do you go about adding a sling to your SKS if it didn't come with the thingy to attach a sling on the stock? Can you buy the thingy? What would it be called besides "the thingy"?
>>
>>34483963
The benefit is really not worth the modification to the rifle.
Not to mention if you're over 5'10 you're probably gonna have bad eye relief with an optic that far back.
Best bet is to mount a scout styled optic on a drop in mount where the rear sight is.

So I really wanna buy an SKS. I understand Norinco is new manufacture Chinese? Is it terrible quality? Or could I buy one and have a decent rifle? I don't intend to hunt, already got defense covered but don't wanna buy something that breaks too often/is crap.
>>
>>34485905
Dust cover anon here. From what I have used my SKS for (target shooting mainly), it has worked well and is decent at what it does. It is reliable, has a lot of aftermarket shit you can do to it (if youre into that) and is easy to dissasemble/clean.

I bought some cheap stripper clips online, and the pegs that normally keep them from sliding into the mag well aren't wide enough. I had to grind one down to get it out a bit ago.

Is my clip guide too wide, or are the cheap clips just too shitty to even function remotely correctly?

Also: Where to find decent clips?

>>34497395
Not him but you have absolutely no idea on how a bayonet is used, you do not cut with one at all you you stab, twist, and remove, sharpening one just makes it more of a hazard for training and does not make it any more deadly in use even without sharpening it is still pointy enough to get into someones chest.

It absolutely will not hold an edge.
You could spend an hour sharpening it, only to have it be as dull as before the first time you poke something with it.
Learn the difference between a field knife and bayonet, and then go fuck yourself.

My uncles friends has 2 sks' and he's willing to sell me both plus 8 stripper clips for $300, sorry for the shitty picture. One of them is a yugo I think and it doesn't have the bayonet or anything on the muzzle. The other one has the bayonet as well as a muzzle device, he says that it's for a grenade launcher but I'm not too sure if that's true. Anyways, they're both in good condition and ate up everything we put into them. Should I do it?
>>
>>34500405
Of course, then keep what you like, sell the other for more money, and you'll have nothing in the SKS you hang on to. If you don't care for them, sell both at a profit. Then put your 300 back in your account and use the rest for whatever.

Guns to men are like shoes to women. Take advantage. I suggest at least keeping one as trade bait. I've gotten some good motorcycle deals by having weapons to swap.

Never marry what you can pimp.

720 rounds of corrosive is worth about ~$140
30 round AK magazines can be had for about $30 and those little ones are uncommon so I'm not sure about the price, but let's say they're worth half.
So you have $300 in accessories and then a $600 rifle. Try to bring him down in price at least if you really want to buy it. I live in BC and not a big gun area but I've still seen SKS-D's and the ones for a good price on the EE were also from Calgary and Edmonton (but sold already).
At $1000 you can find a used CZ858 which is a much better option. It's a pain in the ass to reload magazines on a gun without a pistol grip to get a good hold of it while using the other hand.
>>
>>34500436
That sounds like a good idea. I could sell the other one for probably $400 and throw in 2 stripper clips. And basically get away with a free gun. Also the gun in the pic is the first rifle I ever fired which was around 3 years ago. So i feel like I could keep that for some sentimental value

Thanks Anon, I'm always kind of insecure about my guns, always thinking I should refinish them or I chose poorly.

Anyone else feel that way?

Yeah it's chrome lined. It's just a Russian SKS modified to used AK mags. And no, the sling is just different for some reason. There's one clip on each side for some reason. Look at the photo again.

Agreed. Romy's are my personal favorite. They have a neat combination of rarity and quality.

I want to refinish mine, but I'm afeared I'm going to fuck it up.

Anyone have any tips?

Charging boats are a real problem. Kayaks are generally passive but I had a canoe get spooked and try to take a bite out of my arm last week.

I like 858's, but I like chrome lined barrels

I love the beat to shit stock on my type 56. Feels authentic. If I was to change it I've seen these sabertooth aluminum stocks that accept AR parts but its like $200-300 and for an SKS thats just...

I seen a Russian sks with a star stamped on the receiver right by the serial numbers what does that mean?

non-chrome line bores are more accurate because the surface of the bore is more even and smooth, chrome plating adds dimensional differences and is thicker and thinner in some parts. the rifling isnt "deeper" , the bore just has little globs of chrome here and there. it does affect accuracy but for a 7.62x39, considering the range of the cartridge, it doesnt really matter in my opinion

Trying to find an SKS in Upstate Cuomo-Land. Any advice on what sort of dealers I should look for?

Tim's guns down in elbridge had yugos for a while, I'd give them a call and ask if they have anything, they're pretty good.
