As an example, imagine you have a canvas bag/sand bag etc filled with misc shit. Grabbing right into the bag with your finger tips rather than grabbing by the straps or handles is better for forearm and grip strength.

A decent forearm workout that was taught to me was thus:
Figure out how much weight you can hold for one minute with dumbbells in your hands. As a warm up, take half of that weight and pick it up and hold it for 15 second on. Take a thirty second break, then go up 5 pounds and hold that for 15 seconds. Repeat this step in 5 pound increments until you reach your 1st minute max weight, then hold that weight for one minute. Take a TWO minute break, then re-attempt your one-minute max. If you fail to reach a minute, take your two minute break and then decrease the weight by five pounds and try it again. Try to stay at the same weight before going down five pounds, but when you fail take the break and reduce the weight. Continue this exercise until you reach your "half max" and then the work out is complete.
You should do this at the end of your regular weightlifting session, as it will kill your grip strength for a while and you could accidentally drop weight on yourself. Wouldn't want the bar to slip out of your palm while on the bench.
