In the old production soviet gost filters the location of the primary filter is the same as in the new production, the only difference in these two are that the old production uses an asbestos based air filter instead of a fiberglass based filter like they make now. In either case a damaged filter which obviously exposes the filter, renders it useless and harmful, with the result inhaled particulates from the primary filter and the activated carbon. If detected dispose of the filter according to the standards of your city.
I would like to conclude that as long as the filter has been stored correctly and hasn't received any visible damage it is absolutely safe to use, whether it be old or new production. That being said this only extends to gp-5 filters to my knowledge, I have no understanding of the construction of other filters.

I am true to my practice, and attempt to wear some sort of mask when stalking. Usually I wear the gas mask inside at all times due to the environments I enter. It's not too uncomfortable when you get used to it, even when you're like me and have long Emo hair.

That works for the basic can filters. The large filters are all asbestos hazards. There is a review video explaining why box filters of ALL kinds should be avoided. GP 5 basic filters are debatable on if they are harmful, though presumably not due to the asbestos being in a compound that does not expose it in lethal form. The big box filters do not use this compound, and rely completely on blue, or other asbestos for quality filtering.

Most gas masks will register any 40mm canister as valid, regardless of origin. I've not personally seen, or used a 50mm canister, but I'm sure if you can find one for your gas mask it will be compatible. Also, any gas filtercreated 90's+ will be absolutely safe, regardless of origin.
