I've been looking to pick up a kar98k recently. What is a fair price for a decent condition one with german markings? Seems crazy to me that they are delling for over $1200 now on gunbroker.

A Russian capture in good shape should be about $600-700.

Can anyone take a shot at identifying this badge? It's pretty light and may be a replica or fake. I don't recognize the language or style of the symbols on them, if they even are letters, and the flaming red star is just confusing symbolism. It was with some soviet medals, and it definitely looks communisty, but has anyone seen something similar?

The text on the back stands for

Or, Price 12 kopeks.
Pins like this were common in the USSR for cities, tourist attractions, etc to have. Kind of equivalent to those penny presses you find everywhere in the US.

Well hey that's kind of cool. Might mine be some sort of city emblem? Any way to find out what mine is?
>>
>>34468139
I'm not overly familiar with it, but it looks like old church slavonic or old east slavic script on the front, so I suspect it's from something historic. If it were a city, they'd probably have had the city's name on it in modern Cyrillic on there.
The red star, though, suggests something more Soviety than an old monastery or something, though.
You'd probably have to find somebody who can read the front to tell you where it's from.

This probably explains why the 4 I've saw at a gun show last weekend were all $700+.

One retard overpays on brokegunner and idiot gunshow sellers think they can sell their shit for the same.
>>
>>34471767
I dont know if the quality is any different, but I do know that replacing the barrel of a savage is impossible without literally sawing the thing off at the reciver threads.
>>
>>34471881

Remember that many if not most of the people at gun shows expect you to haggle.

>>34472008
There isn't enough room to haggle down when the price they put on it is over double the value.

>>
>>34472306
>>34472705
Once again, oil finished stocks require coats of oil periodically. It was literally regular practice when these guns were issued
>>
>>34473081
Are you carrying your milsurp through mud and dirt and dropping it on rocks and shit removing the finish? No? Then it's not needed.
>>
>>34473081
I doubt every country used linseed on their stocks. If you could give me a list of countries that did, I would be interested. But as it is, my finish is in good condition and I have no intentions of modifying it or reapplying it.
>>
>>34473106
Shooting the gun generates huge amounts of heat which causes the oil to leave the wood
>>
>>34473081
>Once again, oil finished stocks require coats of oil periodically.
No, no it doesn't and if you do the stock will eventually turn black. If you actually read museum conservation they say not to do so.
The oil's only purpose was to keep out excess moisture. It doesn't preserve wood. It doesn't keep wood from "drying out." It doesn't keep things "fresh."
>>34473143
It doesn't evaporate. It oxidizes. Furthermore, not all stocks had an oil finish.

Be sure to get the gas regulator set correctly otherwise the rifle is jammy.

Also it gets very hot very quickly. If you fired ARs before and said well I fired 4 mags without issue so my SVT should be able to crack off 20 rounds rapidly. Do not be surprised when extraction fails or rips the base right off a stuck round.

The SVT-40 is pretty cool but a finnicky gun. It had some light primer strikes on surplus Chinese ammo when I used it but worked good on the surplus Russian ammo I had. I didn't have a chance to adjust the gas properly since it was a friend's. I definitely regret not buying one.

Repos start at like $60, spend a few extra dollars and get the real thing. Just make sure you are buying a combat bayonet and not a training bayonet.

Late '45 manufacture, post-WW2, someone added a recoil pad so I'll have to swap that out, hopefully the butt plate is still underneath.

Hm, last thread that dealt with milsurp has some stuff posted in it but ah well. I ordered a brace of those belgian packs and some flek shirts shirts. To keep it on topic theres a new brand of 8mm that Classic is selling, PWA sport cartridges. They apparently shoot extremely dirty and failures are rampant.

Let's say I scope an old military Mauser, would it be as accurate as a modern hunting rifle?

Also where can I find a Mauser in .308 or 30-06?

Springfields if you have money, but there are plenty of Mausers rechambered after the war, for example the Israeli ones, norwegian army mausers or spanish FR8s or FR7s.
>>
>>34481618

If you spend an equal amount of money on a basic modern bolt action then it will do about as well as any given military bolt gun. There are bolt guns that are exceptionally accurate, but they are generally less common and more expensive, meaning you're still looking at about the same price of a modern gun.

Also a modern gun gives you a modern chambering without re-chambering the gun.

I'm very pleased with this purchase. One, I got it for a pretty good price ($300) because it was a from a friend who wants to keep rifles in our reenacting group. Two, he threw in like 10 stripper clips for free - not a super big deal, but still nice. And, three and most importantly, working the bolt on this guy is super smooth. Like, I've fired both Mk. IIIs and No. 4 Mk. 1s, and this one feels way more like a Mk. III.

Pull the op rod back, and there should be some markings on the barrel showing date of manufacture and who made it. Take the trigger group out and the manufacturer should be stamped on the side. Lastly if you take the action out of the stock, you'll be able to see who made the op rod.

This seriously. They'd rather circlejerk about throwing away their trustfunds instead of doing something actually useful and still related to their hobby like talking about shooting or making repairs. You know, things actual gun owners and shooters do.

Surplus gun owners of this type should not even be considered real gun owners anymore.

It takes literally 1000s of rounds to wear anything on a gun appreciably. There are people who drive cars way rarer than any gun any of you autists thinks is rare. Yet they aren't turbo autists about it
>>
>>34496824
car people are way way worse than gun people in my experience. i dont think its the act of shooting so much as the potential for damage. your friend joes an idiot and fucked something or he drops it and scuffs up the pristine wood on your 1 of 500 trials gun ect. the same shit that would freak a car guy out if you grinded the gears or scratched the paint. not so much using it but its a greater risk of messing it up.
>>
>>34496872
People race vintage cars worth millions of dollars and are one of maybe 10. They aren't afraid of crashing it. You want to know why they aren't afraid of crashing it? Because they aren't autists and will repair the damage. You fags think that replacing parts that wear on your basic bitch 91/30 is sacrilege. Part of preserving history is using it and maintaining it properly.
>>
>>34496872
The reason a car guy freaks out when you scratch his car is because a good paint job costs 1000s of dollars. To get a good show quality chrome job is 10000s of dollars

I'm trying to figure out what I want to go for next. I'm thinking maybe a Type 38 or MAS 36, but I'd also love something milsurp with a scope. PU 91/30s aren't that interesting to me. I know there are repro 1903A4s that can be gotten, but does anyone know of other cool scoped milsurp that isn't stupidly expensive? I would love a ZfK55 or a No 4 Mk 1(T), but there's no way I could afford one.

Probably about $400 for rings and a zrak optic if you want to make a clone. Or you could try finding a real one in the US.
It's not the best option but I think it's kind of cool since it's sort of a hybrid being an old rifle with a modern optic, but they actually used them just like this in the Balkan war.
