Is it okay to kill squirrels just for fun? Or should you only kill them if you plan on skinning/eating them?
>>
Just have some quick easy justification when telling kill stories:
>muh bird feeder
>muh chewed power lines
>muh harassed pets
>muh attic structural damage
That way you won't sound like a.......
......
nut
>>
>>34463450
the stray cat that stays around my place loves to kill squirrels, I like to pop them off with my .22 and use her as my retriever cat
>>
How do you even eat a squirrel? Is that safe?
>>
>>34463652
Uncle Eddie used to until he learned they were high in cholesterol
>>
>>34463674
I feel repulsed by it because I think squirrels have no meat. Only guts.

Squirrels are tasty as fuck in a stew. I wouldnt eat city squirel tho.

>>
>>34463784
This. They're rats with bushy tails.
>>
>>34463431
Sometimes, but I feel better morally when I kill crows, woodchucks, and coyotes. Fucking pests.
>>
>>34463652
i'm from south eastern kentucky, a lot of people eat squirrel brains and/or cook them down and make "squirrel gravy"
>>
All branch niggers must die.
>>
Are they damaging your property, crops, livestock etc?

At least in Texas they're considered a game animal and you're now allowed to kill them just for shits and giggles.

Protip: when you feed the birds you feed everything else. Stop it.

They're fucking tree rats, why would you even give a shit?
>>
My personal stance is that you should never kill anything unless it is harming you, your property, or nature itself (ie invasive species like the wild hogs that are spreading through the US), or if you plan on eating it.

Do you want your property to smell like rotting meat?

I tossed all 80-something of the squirrels I killed over the course of last autumn/winter in the woods afterward. Something always carried them off by the time morning rolled around.

Hunting coyotes has a negative effect on reducing their population, it makes them breed more and faster you twit. Hunt hogs instead and leave coyotes alone.
>>
>>34463431

You wanna eat it? Cool. It causing an issue? Cool. Just because you wanna kill something? Fuck no.
>>
>>34464322
Gee, tell that to the livestock and pet dogs when they're ripping them apart.

When they learn not to fear humans, and with no natural predator, that's when a lot of them start to creep in, and waiting for population to exceed carrying capacity isn't really a solution at that point.
>>
>>34464322
not that guy but coyotes killed my cat so i shoot them whenever i can
>>
>>34464322
it still causes an overall drop in population, retard. they breed to try and make up for the low numbers, not to exceed carrying capacity.
>>
>>34463652
stew
>>
>>34463652
It's completely safe as long as they don't have warbles. You can fry them and make squirrel gravy which is really good with homemade biscuits. My great grandpa would have my great grandma boil them and then he'd take a spoon and crack their heads and eat the brains. They've got a little less meat on them than a wild rabbit. Squirrel is good in stew too. Burgoo is really good. It's a bunch of different meats and veggies thrown together in a pot. It's real popular here in Kentucky.
>>
>>34463652
boil 'em, mash 'em, stick 'em inna stew
>>
>>34464047
Just eat em you pussy. Squirrel tastes pretty damn good.
>>
>>34463431
I justify it because the grey fuckers are invasive and driving out the native population.
Same thing with hogs and nutria

The pool I work for has coyotes trying to move in on the pool. It's even possible they killed our pool cat so the game warden has given us clearance to kill them. Even the neighborhood next to us wants them gone
>>
>>34463431
Don't let the meat go to waste man, have some stew.
>>
>>34463652
As everyone said previously, but I have even grilled them. They're kind of gamey, but taste better than say, Duck and especially Goose. Pop some BBQ sauce (i didn't) and you're good to go.

And no, OP, 'just for fun' is on the road to Serial-Killer. Eat them or concoct your own moving targets.

It actually a bad neighborhood so shooting off a gun could cause some weird shit to happen. Our fence has razor wire on it for a reason same with two males having to stay for every one female
>>
I've shot 200-300 squirrels in the course of my life, never eaten one though I did try it once and found it was too gamey. they are tree rats, little more.
>>
>>34463431
They way I see it they exist by my good will in the first place. They live on land I maintain, and eat food that grows because I control the ecosystem. Even animals I don't particularly mind get shot if they mess with the ecosystem I control. For instance, there were some beavers that were making a dam that would have caused one of my ponds to overflow, destroying it. So I shot them, skinned them, then fed them to the catfish. Later on I will catch the catfish, and eat them. The catfish in and of themselves exist because of the food I provide them.

Essentially you are beyond an apex predator, everything is allowable, your land your rules.

>>34464322
>If you kill the coyotes they win

>>34465928
Just get a regulated suppressor. The stamp costs less than the actual item.

I kill tree rats for the past few years. Night rats too. Finally got tired of dealing with their destruction of my garden and home. Trapping and relocation didn't work with the squirrels. Trapping stopped working with the night rats, as they got smarter. Poisons stopped working as they built immunity. So I shoot the buggers. And it's fun, so bonus there. Wish I didn't have to. I actually find all rodents impressive in their adaptability and intelligence. But they pushed me too far. Tearing shit up right on my porch, even in my kitchen. Can't have that.
>>
>>34466883
Well we're not Reddit. I imagine tons of people got the reference but have more important things to do than reply with "lol jaja sick referenz bruh"
>>
>>34466041
Beaver are great fucking eating, you missed out.
>>
>>34463431
It's a lot of trouble if they arent really causing a fuss and it's also work to dispose of them because my dogs can get sick messing with the rotting corpses.

Overall I just leave things alone unless they become problems, no reason to waste time and effort unless I get something out of it.
>>
>>34463431

You're unlucky to live in a country with such moral conundrums.

Come to NZ. If it's a mammal and not a pet, then you're doing the environment a favour by killing it.

We don't have squirrels, but we do have possums. There was a bit of controversy in the news here the other day because a primary school was teaching kids about the environment by having them catch and drown possums as humane pest control. The controversy was only about the fact kids were drowning possums, not that they were killing them.
>>
>>34468844

Crows are amazing. I have a murder of them on my property that are complete bros. They hang out all the time on my deck when I am outside. I agree on Coyotes though. Don't have a woodchuck problem around here.
>>
They're classified as varmints for a reason. Waste them to your heart's content and don't feel bad about it.
>>
>>34468844
Honestly, you guys should just go on a cat pogrom. Same as Hawaii. Cats and rats fuck up everything on Pacific islands.

As an aside, NZ is the prettiest country I've ever been to, I'd move there in a heartbeat if I had any kind of transferable skill.
>>
Grease every single squirrel you see. When you think you wasted enough squirrels, waste another.
>>
>>34464322
I wouldn't actively hunt coyotes, just take out the ones that get near my homestead. They will fuck up your livestock.
