The "3-Line Rifle M1891" and its subsequent incarnations.

Caliber 7.62x54R: the oldest cartridge still employed in official combat with an impressive 126 years of service, still going strong.

Like it or leave it, post your observations and experience with it here. I am curious, however: Why all the hatred for it?

...Nyet - rifle is fine regardless! Don't like recoil, get recoil pad; don't like BOOM, get ear plugs.

Discuss.

fuck I suppose this is the best place to ask this

currently in the process of cleaning my surplus M91/30 from 1943

do I need to clean the barrel after every time I shoot it?
>>
There is little outright hatred for the Mosin; the criticism of it that has started to appear recently, and rightly so, is that it costs too much for what it does. When even a rack grade AR-15 can be had for less than $400 and will shoot 2 MOA with 30 cpr ammo, there is little practical reason to spend $250 on a bog standard Tula Mosin that is less effective in every single way and isn't cheaper to shoot.

To begin with, the only real advantage of the Mosin over other firearms was its price, which is why there's no reason to get one when its price is hardly less than any other competing offerings with far better performance.
>>
>>34463275
Me, too. Honestly, I don't get what the big hang-up's all about. The bolt's a bit of a pain to disassemble, sure, but that's about it.
>>
>>34463481
if you want to keep it from rusting yeah you do.
if you dont give a shit do whatever. youve got about a week before lightsurface rust becomes true pitting.
>>
>>34463481
After every single shot taken: No (unless you're "breaking in" the barrel, but that's largely debatable).

After a day at the range: Yes.

Largely depends, if your Soviet-surplus 54R cartridges have corrosive primers (most, not all, usually do - characterized by colored froth). Always ensure you ask the vendor, as you move to purchase a 440-round spam can.
>>
>>34463257
Where is the best place to get 91/30 stocks? I got a mosin turned deer rifle last week and I wanna put an original wood stock on instead of this garbage polymer stock.
>>
>>34463540
$250!?

Damn, I bagged mine for under $130! That stated, keep in mind that this was over a decade ago 'fore Big 5 Sporting Goods went full cuck-tard. Least, I didn't snag it at Dick's.
>>
>>34463687
Thank you anon
>>
>>34463257
>Why all the hatred for it?
People are booty blasted it's no longer $50 for one. It's no different overall than any other mass issue milsurp.
>>
>>34463722
>>34463540

Milisurp with always have a market, and they will always increase in price. The target market doesn't go around thinking "Yes! I got this beat up battle rifle to shoot sub MOA." The lore of the rifle is it's history and owning a piece of it. You can get a smith and wesson model 36.. and outdated wheel gun for like $600 or you can get a brand new glock 19. People will always enjoy old stuff regardless if there's better stuff on the market. Do I think the mosin is overpriced? Kinda-sorta.. The gun its self is extremely basic and crude, and the surplus ammo is drying up. But regardless it served it's place killing Nazi's and people love the idea of killing Nazi's.

The m39s are gaining ground being more expensive too, but they're a different breed
>>

My $99 Nugget is accurate enough for hunting, has a shit trigger, and is totally worth what I paid for it.
They're shit rifles that get the job done adequately for what you paid for them 5 years ago.

Now however, unless you want one specifically for its sentimental milsurp value then just get an entry bolt gun in .308.
>>
>>34463257
I love my Mosin and the 7.62x54R cartridge.

Mine is mainly a collector's piece though. I don't intend to shoot it very often.
>>

I Just ordered a m39 with a cracked stock and light rust from Sweaty Jew Ben... I know Im going to get fucjed, but whatever.

And it may not be drying up else where, but there's limited quantities in the states due to import regulations and Russia getting an attitude with us.

I got two 440 cans for like $130 each. Can't find that anymore

It's on par with the Gewehr 1888 and Lebel Model 1886, and was meant to modernize Russian arms at the time. Right before WW II they were planning on phasing them out in lieu of the SVT-40, but as the USSR lost manufacturing capability, they fell back to the simpler Mosin design.

The hate is probably Sour Grapes from people who lost out. The rifles are antiques by modern standards but people who call them shit are just ignorant. Poorfags gonna poor.

>>34463481
Cleaning your gun soon after shooting is just a good habit, corrosive or no.

>>34464578
Russian Imports were only part of the problem, any remaining surplus got redirected to the ME and Ukraine; to groups who are willing to pay top price for anything they could get their hands on. If surplus does come back, it's going to be not only more expensive but in smaller amounts

Recently acquired a rearsenaled 91/30 hex for $250, but the bolt is kinda loose when the thing is cocked. Like if I shake the rifle alot, the bolt handle will move upwards a bit but not fly open and come out of battery. Is this normal ? Or am I retarded?

>Is this normal ?
Yes. The Mosin bolt body is separate from the bolt head and the cocking piece, so when cocked the only tension on it is friction from the locking lugs through the bolt connector, and pressure from the mainspring thus it can move around a little bit if the connector fit is not tight. When it fires the load is being placed on the bolt head anyway.

Last weekend I took my Mosin out for the first time in like 6 months to a year. I've been shooting my AR15 and SKS for the past while so the weight and recoil really caught me off guard. I suppose it didn't help I was playing commando and running around in full nam gear in the hot sun and got super tired by the time I used my Mosin. Hopefully I get used to it again because I have a lot of good memories with it.

The striker release/sear is probably worn down, becoming beveled or rounded. Contact between the sear and... "spur" (for lack of better term; I'm sure another anon knows what it's called) should be flush and even, leading to a sharp, crisp trigger break.

That said, you should probably take it in (or do it yourself, if you're proficient) and swap out the trigger assembly for a new one.

That stated, please elaborate what you mean by "doesn't stay in...". Do you mean when bolt is open, or do you mean while the bolt is locked in-battery?

There are two options:
- VKT (State Rifle Factory, later: Valmet).
- Sako.
Quality on average was equal, but while rifles with VKT barrels were assembled in Finnish Army Depots (Weapons Depots 1 & 3), Sako built their rifles on their own. Sako is also more recognizable brand, so it often tends to cost extra.

Instead of brand try to find quality-wise as good of a rifle as possible. If you focused on accuracy alone, postwar rifles from 1960's and 1970's tend to be in best shape since they usually saw least actual use. With older rifles (if possible) check bore and that stock for possible cracks and that it is not too soft (rifle stocks are birch - which tends to go soft if soaked with oil repeatedly for decades). If you remove action from stock beware of possible shims (which may fall of after which figuring out the places where they were might be difficult to figure out) added to make barrel free-float. Barrel may give excellent accuracy even if it is not perfect, but pitted bores are to be avoided. Finnish military maintained much higher accuracy standards than the Soviets, hence rifles with poor bore routinely got their barrels replaced with new ones, but what happened after the rifles went to civilian market is anybody's guess.

i had to redo the finish a while back because someone (my dad) spilled solvent on the stock and there was a big spot of exposed wood.

unfortunately i may have overdone the sanding on one part and one of the markings on the stock is slightly faded. That and the upper handguard didn't come out the same color for some reason. This was a while back when they were still like 99 dollars so i didn't think much about it. I most likely ruined the resale value but i don't really plan on getting rid of it and it still very beautiful in person.

Okay, I guess yall are the best to ask.
I bought a box of old surplus ammo with corrosive primers off a friend of mine. Shot it, cleaned it, all the regular stuff. Put it away for a few weeks, but living in South Louisiana makes for really humid storage areas for my guns. I'm used to regular surface rust, but my Mosin looks fucking disgusting. The once shiny bolt now has dark tarnished areas where rust once was and I can't find an effective way of cleaning my barrel, which makes me scared my pristine bore is going to ruin. What's a good way to clean the barrel out? Bore snakes only go so far, you feel?

You're about the same size/weight as my gf. Not gonna lie to you, man, the 91/30 is gonna be almost as tall as you, and taller than you if you put a bayonet on it. its definitely manageable though. She'd never shot anything before and once she got past the recoil of a 7.62x54, she had no problem with it.
>>
>>34475040
>>34474920
Also, I paid about the same for my 1928 Tula Hex, so its average for a mosin about now
>>
>>34475040
Eh, it'd have to be about 20 inches taller to be my height. Def not putting a bayonet on it, kinda impractical in 2015 + 2 especially for my uses. Recoil has never been an issue for me (biggest I've shot is .308s and 6.5x55mm Swede). How does the recoil of x54r compare to the ones I mentioned?
>it's definitely manageable
Awesome, thx
>>
Why do people act like mosins kick like a mule? im sure the carbines have a bit more bite to them but its honestly the same as any other fullsized rifle caliber, the weight and length dampen it a lot also. Quite a few deer rifles ive shot recoil more than any milsurp ive come across.
>>
>>34474932
I'm 5'2" and 110 lbs, use a proper stance and you'll be fine.

>>34475040
a Nugget on its own is almost exactly 4 feet long, with the bayonet it is about 5'2" IIRC
>>
>>34475093
54r isnt much more than 308 IIRC. Only shot 308 from an Ishapore Enfield a few times, though.

>>
>>34475138
91/30 is 48 inches and bayonet is 17 inches. I'll concede, I did exaggerate slightly. Remember it being taller. Could have to do with the archangel its on.
>>
>>34474799
Good question, Anon, but I wish I knew. Anyone else have ideas?
>>
>>34474932
Five-eight, 160lbs here.

Subjective, completely depends upon your personal preferences. The only way you're going to know is if you've friends/acquaintances who've both an original model and a carbine model between them. Meet up sometime, somewhere, and go plinking.

I love that my Mosin was $97 after taxes.

I hate my self that I never bought an SKS when it was that price.

How much are mosins nowadays anyway?

I remember getting mocked on /k/ ~6 years ago because I paid $120 for mine.

Standing? Left arm fully extended, rifle parallel with my left arm and chest.

Biggest tip would be just let it fucking kick you. I put +100 rounds through mine last time at the pits. My old man always said hold the rifle as tight against your shoulder as possible to negate the kick. Ive found just letting your shoulder and gun stay loose is much nicer.

So I bought this Mosin-Nagant, but I can't figure out which model it is. All the pictures I've looked at don't match up to this mine. As you can see the barrel sticks out with nothing under it.

No I am serious. I don't know all that much about them, why do you think the barrel is so bare? Like all of those are different.

Also another thing, not a single one of the serial numbers match. Not on the butt plate, the barrel, the clip, the bolt. They are all different, but to my understanding this is a common thing.

Used to own a 1943 91/30 and the sights were right on. I own a M39 now.

I want more ammo damn it.
>>
>>34477457
Clips for a Mosin do not have serial numbers. The integral box magazine however does have a serial number on the floor plate. You've got a dogshit bubbafucked parts gun, congrats.
>>
>>34474999
Yes assuming it's not rusted to shit and not sporterized. Don't forget to ask for the bayonet and cleaning stuff and sling, some stores try to screw you out of that.

been thinking about getting a glorious Moist Nugget for some hunting (I'm in CA)

this would be my second rifle, adding on to my lever action .22

what I'm debating is getting an SKS rather than a Moist Nugget

my thought process is that if I had bought my Nugget 5-10 years ago it would have been worth but now I feel like the bang isn't worth the buck bc of the ammo and quality of the rifle

should I just go with an SKS which are equally as cheap with more abundant ammo?
>>
>>34478180
get sks instead comrade

>>
>>34478197
The SKS is just so much nicer of a rifle. I own both and if I had to keep one no doubt it would be the SKS. That being said both are good guns, but the SKS is lighter, has better ergonomics, is semi auto, has more plentiful ammo, a better aftermarket and less recoil with the lower round but still packs a punch.

I bought my Mosin (1942) three year ago at a gun show and I know I over paid but it has been worth it because I've been able to get my friends into guns (gun rights included ) and my dad back into shooting. I don't regret my purchase, but I wish I bought a couple spam cans when they where cheap.

>>34478593
people sell babies sometimes. i dont blame you though, matching scopes are super rare. i just want the turned down bolt handle without mixing parts up or fucking up the bolt.
>>
>>34478593
Optic wouldn't be so bad if it had better eye relief.
>>
>>34478869
I guess my slavic stature is perfect for the use of the eye relief on the scope then :^)
