Its funny you posted this because I literally just got home from the FFL with my Marlin Guide Gun.

I got it for 480, and provided you get one that's not a lemon, its a good purchase. Mine was unfortunately a lemon and could not cycle a round when I got it.

I just got it back from Warranty repair and it cycles fine. Will shoot tomorrow.

I've got an 1895 SBL coming my way from possibly the slowest gun store in the world, with what's likely the slowest postal service in the world. I didn't want to chance any more waiting, so I asked them to stick some boxes of ammo in the package when they got around to sending it.
I've heard that newer Marlin rifles are better than they were just a few years back, and I sincerely hope so, lest I have to deal with the slowpokes in the store again.
>>
>>34462579
What a comfy hat.
>>
>>34462579
Is that Hornady FTX ammo? How are you liking it? I had the brilliant idea to buy some so I'd get some brass to reload, on account of the claims of flatter trajectory and all, but then I got told that the brass is shorter than regular .45-70 brass and only really good for reloading FTX bullets in, which, of course, require their own dies.
Sorry if I seem like a massively perplexed tard pointing out the obvious, I'm entirely new to the calibre and reloading and figured any bullet would work out, provided it's the right calibre.
>>
>>34462766
I haven't even fired the gun yet, will tell you tomorrow.

It's loaded pretty hot for factory ammo and it's reasonably cheap.

>I've heard that newer Marlin rifles are better than they were just a few years back

OP here. i have a mid '70s era Marlin carbine chambered in .44 mag. the action is rough as hell. i thought about getting it worked on, but the cost of that would probably be more than the rifle is worth. i inherited that and a couple of .22LR 60s era marlins from my dad when he passed, one a semi auto and the other a lever. they both had feeding issues.

i have a circa 2005 Marlin bolt action in .22 mag that shoots like a dream and is accurate as anything i've ever shot, so i'm kind of stuck in the middle and don't know what to expect of a new marlin.

sub $500 sounds a bit more reasonable for that .45-70. we'll see. i'd be interested to see what kind of experience you guys have with yours.

I've got a 2015 1895 in .45-70 and it's considerably improved over their rifles from the early 2000s. Comparing it to my dad's .357 from the 70s, it's not quite as smooth in operation, but that could be down to how much that .357 has been used over nearly 40 years. Biggest issue I've had with it so far is the load gate spring is stronger than it needs to be and makes it more difficult to load the magazine.
>>
>>34465800
Their 1894 has the same issue.

I saw that with mine as well. I also took it apart and hit it with a [spoiler]dremel[/spoilerthatdoesn'treallywork] veeery carefully. Bugger just about took off my thumb the first time I tried to load it, it was crazy sharp. I was about to pull it out and bend it, but I ended up selling it (regret that one...).
>>
>>34464714
You mean a Red Ryder carbine action 200 shot range model air rifle with a compass in the stock and this thing which tells time?
>>
>>34462477
This is the only thing preventing me from buying a .45-70, I don't trust Marlin.

What are some other options in a modern, yet rugged, platform?
>>
>>34462579
nice wintergeen, thats some good shit.
>>
>>34466303
Ruger number 1, a couple of the other modern single shots, and a couple of double rifles.

That's pretty much it.
>>
I'd get one in 45 long colt tbqh.

I only say that because 45 long colt is like 50 cents a round, while 45-70 is $1 per round.
>>
>>34467838
The Baikal double rifle in .45-70 is supposed to be a real good brush gun, or so I've heard.
Don't forget Henry or Winchester, who both make lever action rifles that will stand up to being loaded as hot as Marlin rifles.
>>
>>34463615
>Don't talk to me or my son ever again
>>
>>34468101
Henry needs to put a proper loading gate on their lever gats or they can suck my left nut.
>>
>>34468303
Because nothing screams useful like an extra thing for dirt to cram into. At least I can tactical reload a gun that will never see combat.
>>
>>34468303
I guess the loading gate would be nice to have, yes. I've mostly been looking at their .22 rifles as fun plinkers, for which the loading gate isn't as much a necessity as much a convenience.
>>
Henry has a break action single shot coming out soon in 45-70 im going to pick up.
>>
>>34468314
Literally every pump shotgun is designed to load the magazine tube directly and top it off whenever. Why is having a big gaping hole on the bottom of a shotgun not a crippling design feature, but having a covered loading gate on a lever gun is?
>>
I find the Marlin a bit grindy.. feels like the lever is scraping itself to bits.

Try a browning blr.. it has a box mag so can use pointed rounds.
>>
>>34469551
Or a Henry Long Ranger. Mine just shipped and I'm starting to get "new gun twitchy".
>>
>>34462477
how is this fucking acceptable, the product just doesn't work when you buy it? Marlin should literally give you a 100 dollar rebate for wasting your fucking time.

>>34462418
>.45-70 gubment is a fucking monster
It's a kitten in factory load. It's a meaty little thing with boutique "hot loads" or handloads.

The 45-70 simply doesn't have the brass to be a monster. Primers start falling out when you push a 500gr bullet past 1850ft/s, but only try that in a Ruger No1 or a bolt action, as even strong modern lever actions might not take that. For decent brass life in my bolt action I keep 500gr around 1750ft/s and 400gr at 2050ft/s, and it is in no way a "monster".

Not sure many on /k/ know what it's like to shoot actual monsters, except maybe a very small minority that routinely feed 2+ ounce 3 1/2" turkey shells through their bird guns or that guy with the 458 Lott.
>>
I have been watching videos of 3-gun shotgun speedloaders and I was wondering why hasn't this approach to rapid loading a tube magazine been messed with, especially on the tacticool side.
>>
>>34474795
Would a 560 grain bullet(mold is for 560 but that's for pure lead, I plan on hardcast with 28 brinell) be Ok in a Marlin 1895 GBL going at 1600 fps from a 18.5 barrel? These will be hand loads.
>>
>>34462418
I want a Marlin 1895 GBL 18.5 6+1.
I saw one for 520 free shipping. 540 total with fll. There's also a hundre dollar rebate till end of July.
>>
>>34468303

>>
>>34475572
Depends of what powder you use, always check your loading manuals as they will have sections for trapdoor, modern lever, and strong actions. Use modern lever loads only.
>>
I just got pic related in a trade for a 870 police I got for sub 200, I dont reload or anything, but I couldnt pass this shit up, why is 45-70 so damned expensive? why rent there any cheap plinking loadings?

In hindsight im almost completely sure the guy I traded for was an atf honeypot. He had a beard, wore a button down tucked into jeans, and in the same big ass molle bag he pulled this out of he also had scorpion evo with a full stock. He was bad at small talk and at the end of the trade he said he was planning on cutting it down and if I knew anyone who would do it on the DL. I said "Just do it yourself, but get that tax stamp man" and then got the fuck outta there. Guy was a fucking spook, but it was such a good trade. Why he traded a new henry 4570 for a beat to shit 870 police Ill never fucking know.
>>
>>34475995
this is the only pic i could get out of him, thats the same evo he had when he traded me.

Innawoods atm, gun shoots like a dream
>>
>>34475995

>why is 45-70 so damned expensive?

Because it follows the basic rule of "Big round means big money". Also, 45-70 isn't widely produced due to the niche demand for it. It's like asking why 223 and x39 are so cheap.
>>
>>34475995
get HSM, build up a starline brass stash, and get to reloading. Beware to keep your brass clean as the lube on lead bullets can gunk up your chamber.

I live in the UK so we dont have a lot of options for funs.

The "list price" is just your standard manufacturer nonsense. I picked mine up for about $1200 (converted from £ obviously) and British prices are always WAY overpriced compared to American.

http://www.gunbroker.com/item/664505356
>>
>>34470851
Because Marlin is part of Freedom Group, they're told to cut corners during manufacturing for higher profit margins. This has the opposite effect though as everyone knows freedomshit guns are untouchables.
>>
>>34462418

Strongest action. Many 45-70 loads are marlin only. Compared to the competition it's cheaper but not by a lot.
>>
>>34479180
Prices like that aren't too unfamiliar to me. I live in Norway, and I'm looking to pay the same for my Marlin. It sucks, to be sure, but the only thing that helps is to buy more guns and get your friends to buy guns too. An active and alive gun culture is always better than no gun culture.
The ammo availability is another thing: I can get Federal Fusion and Hornady FTX at regular obscene prices (300 gr Federal Power-Shok being the cheapest at $2 ¢80 a pop), so I'll need to get some reloading equipment shortly. Realistically, the same thing goes for any rifle cartridge that isn't terribly mainstream. Is it much the same in the UK?
>>
>>34462766
>the brass is shorter than regular .45-70 brass
Pretty sure that's not true, should be easy to check with Hornaday and find out for sure.

A question about 45-70, is it only loaded with black powder?
>>
>>34462418
If you reload or want to reload 45-70 is amazing for it. I just bought the same rifle and I absolutely love it. It by far is my favorite rifle.
>>
>>34475995
Reload and its 1/5-1/3 the cost depending on what you use. If you don't want an entire setup then get one of the hand setups for 45-70 and should only cost about 100$. After shooting about 200 rounds of handloads it would pay for itself.
>>
>>34481429

I could do that, but I'll still be needing some more brass to reload, so I'll be ordering two bags of Starline brand brass anyway, so I'll have that to compare with when I get around to reloading sometime around next paycheck.

I picked up this butchered P1914 and breathed a bit of life into it with an 18.5" barrel. Current load is 400gr JSP at 2050 with starline brass, 52.5 grains of H4198, seated far out in the second groove since bolt action and long bullet reamed chamber.

Seems to shoot OK too, and it's a bit of fun with the steel buttplate. I think I might move to 500gr Hornady controlled expansion as the Speers seem to splatter like jello when hitting anything at that speed.
>>
>>34484178
>Have you chronied them?
No, but according to he Hornady reloading manual I should be getting 1850-1900fps, but their test barrel was 22". I, like most in this thread have the Marlin guide gun with a 18.5" barrell, so I'm guessing 1800 fps.
>>
>>34484203
Pretty soft load, at least the brass life will be long.
>>
>>34484212
Like I said, i'm new to reloading and the hornady book I have says the max loading of IMR4198 is 48.7gr.

I'll get to bass pro soon and pick up some h4198. It seems like everyone that loads hot, uses that powder.
>>
>>34484251
Honestly more power won't kill shit deader, it's just for fun in my case. In retrospect I should have saved my money and bought a CZ 550 Safari in 458 Rigby (necked up 416 Rigby, they offer it from the factory).

There are other manuals you can look through, and many have multiple sections for what kind of rifle you have in 45-70. They have loads safe for trapdoor rifles only, those loads match factory 45-70 loads from Remington. There are warmer loads for Marlin 1895s, and then there are loads for strong actions.

Obviously it's safe to use trapdoor and Marlin lever action loads in your gun. Do not use my load data in your Marlin.
>>
>>34484289
>Do not use my load data in your Marlin.
I read up on safety before even assembling my press. I remember seeing a picture online of a guy that didn't crimp his cartridges before loading them in his guide gun and he damn near lost three fingers.

>CZ 550 Safari in 458 Rigby
My next purchase will definitely be a CZ in .375 H&H.
>>
>>34484326
>I read up on safety before even assembling my press
Good good, I just wanted to be sure.

>375 H&H
For some reason I've always been cold on the 375, veering to the more energetic 9.3s instead even if they're basically the same bullet weight at the same speed. I kinda want to build a Garand in 9.3x62 since it would feed and function with standard en-bloc clips.
>>
>>34484367
>For some reason I've always been cold on the 375,
I like the versatility of the .375. It is something I could load nice and hot for "just for fun elephant loads", and nice and moderate for hunting hogs.
>>
>>34484394
If you want versatility, your 45-70 is hard to beat.
>>
>>34462418
I'm thinking of picking up the GBL. I've heard rumor that Marlin's QC has drastically improved in recent years. Is this true?
>>
>>34484477
Check it out before you buy, you could easily land on a decent one.
>>
>>34484596
Unfortunately, no gun stores around me stock them, so I'd have to special order it.

>>34484704
You could try the used market, maybe there's one around from before the Cerberusening.
