With the Brits you just stay your rank for a much longer time. Years longer usually.

I'm not sure how it is there, but do Brits treat you like human garbage when you're a low rank like they do in the USA? Because if you're staying at that rank for way longer and still being treated like shit, why would anyone do it and stay in?

In reality, Brit half screw (l/cpl) is the equivalent of a US Corporal, and full screw a US Sergeant. I've dealt with a US Stryker squadron (w/e the US version is) in Poland a few years back, and what yank Sergeants did on a day to day basis, our Corporals did.

Also an old saying my plt 2ic said when I was a young sprog at harrogate:

Our US officers on exchange were paired with their equivalents. The ranks was a different game; as a Lance Sergeant (Corporal for you mortals) I was accompanied by a Staff Sergeant. He was an excellent soldier, but despite the rank difference we had broadly the same responsibilities.

My only real critique of the US rank structure would be the closeness between the officers and the men. This was close when I was in, which was a boringly long time ago, and from what I gather has only become more pronounced now. I did not like it one bit and I was firmly of the opinion that it was one of the things we were consistently better at.

Officers were honestly are best friends in garrison, while they wanted you to hate your NCO, PSG, 1SG, or CSM.

Once we deployed, it was more easy to see that we should have hated our friendly-to-your-face officers that forced our NCOs into the whipping boy role.

Was my first and only duty station, but look back, it is slightly obvious now.
