Nah, the best thing is to get those fabric ones with velcro on them, and put velcro on the side of the shotgun. That way you can swap them

Take off your failed attempt, and try using Linseed oil. Let it sit to soak in undisturbed for a few days at least. Be sure to heed the warning labels about the oil.
Clenzoil and other oils make some really nice finishes as well. Check them out.
