Old thread will be dead soon. Long live the new thread.

What's this white stuff around the tritium vials of my new TruGlo Tritium Pro sights? It's not a poor paint application as the sights are supposed to be plain black on the rear. Is it excess adhesive that wasn't cleaned up?

Situation: when I go shooting at the range (100-300 yards), I need a binoculars or a scope so I can see my groupings. I am cheap, and don't need anything special.

1) what would be the best magnification to get?
2) what benefits, for this task, do monoculars have? Binoculars?
>>
>>34462543
45x magnification works fine for me. Get a monocular; a binocular isn't going to have enough magnification to see your groupings effectively.

Why does Centerfire Systems require you to be over 21 to purchase shit from them?
Trying to buy a longarm through them, what happens if i just check the over 21 box?
Visit from the doggo removal squad? Nothing? I'm old enough to buy longarms, and have done many FFL transfers in the past, what gives?
>>
>>34463187
It's their own policy, not a law. Lying to them isn't a crime. They're not the ones doing the transfer anyway. Check the "over 21" box, they'll send it to your FFL, and that's the end of their involvement. They won't know you're under 21 as it doesn't affect them.

Deac the firearm through ATF-prescribed methods, or take a lil trip to that lake and have yourself a convenient accident.

Aren't pre-1899 firearms not legally constituted as "firearms?"
>>
>>34464088
yes they aren't, that's why I'm asking
also
" Q: But what if I find a pre-1899 gun at a gun shop that was mistakenly logged into the
dealer's "bound book" of post-1899 firearms? Won’t I have to fill out a Form 4473
(yellow form)?

A: No. All the dealer has to do is log the gun out as: "Inadvertent entry. Pre-1899
manufactured receiver. No FFL required." (If the dealer gives you any grief and insists on
the yellow form, a call to any ATF branch office will confirm this.) "

Crossposted from /diy/:

What kind of tactical shit do people buy that I could DIY? I'm too bashful to enjoy mallninja junk but I would be more than willing to tailor tacvests or make holsters out of duct tape or even manufacture night sights (I have lots of leftover glow-in-the-dark material and sights are mechanically simple objects).

Do people buy that kind of stuff from cottage industry people, or is the overlap between Etsy and ArfCom negligible?

Because at my latest trip to the army-navy surplus and mallninja swag store, I noticed that they have a bin of commercially produced paracord bracelets for fucking SIX WHOLE DOLLARS each for not even a full foot of cordage, as if making them by the foot from dollar store paracord/gun line isn't something to do at your desk while idle. but their tool section was mostly rusted out junk (that they admitted to me that has mostly been there since the store opened) and even their knives were mostly Cold Steel style junk.

tl:dr; Is there space for cottage industry and DIY-ery in gun culture, or is it all Cold Steel this and Magpul that?

Cartridge holders, pouches, slings, bandoliers, side saddles, chest rigs... there is a lot that im sure you could make that people would pay for. I myself wouldn't mind seeing some different rigs and vests produced, as I am not really into the tacticool MOLLE pouch systems and such. I prefer good canvas and leather accessories. The combloc countries were good at making such items, check out the chicom chest rigs and ak pouches for ideas, also "pattern 70" from South Africa. Look into an IDPA or 3-gun club. Whenever they meet for practice they do all sorts of stuff the range doesn't normally allow. They're usually an alright bunch, but they can be assholes when it comes to safety since a bad mishap can get them kicked out of a range or whatever.

>>
>>34468642
really depends on why you want it. if you just want to shoot 22lr plenty of rimfire guns are straight up cheaper than the conversion kit like a model60 or 795 and they will out shoot that conversion.
however if this is vs a sw m&p15-22 and youve already got an ar might as well get the conversion.
really depends on how much you love the ars form
>>
>>34468605
I'd say go for a semi-auto first since revolvers aren't in danger of falling off of the handgun roster any time soon.

Make sure to budget for at least 2 or 3 cases of ammo for each caliber you're interested in and buy them all within the year. Although there is a glimmer of hope that that background check for ammo will fall flat you will be kicking yourself for not stocking up if things don't go our way.

Should I get a Glock 19 with a top tier aftermarket trigger, match barrel, and steel sights or a SIG P229? They end up being the same price.
[my opinions follow, feel free to disregard]
I like that I can hold down the hammer while holstering the SIG but I'm not sure how I feel about DA/SA vs striker fired beyond that. The Glock trigger I want is really good travel and break wise but as a carry trigger I can't safely have it as light as the SIG's SA trigger. Ergonomics are a wash really, both fit my hand and point well despite beind so different grip and bore axis wise. The one thing I can't test is balance once I put a light on because the range bully won't let me. Finally I like that I can put pretty wood grips on the SIG, but I'm not sure if I can get a finish that will match the steel slide to the aluminum frame anyways, which makes me almost favor the Glock's look for being more intentionally disparate. I know I could spend less on the Glock but I refuse to compromise.

What is the consensus on integrated packs?

I built one with a molle 2 radio pack, an ALICE rig and some paracord.

Great hunting rig as you dont have to take your gear off and make a ton of movement

>don't have to fight off buddy's back
>pertenant gear can be easily put on back
>just as easily accessed
>aforementioned means a rig can be flat to the ground unlike double stack mags

The us army haversack in 1930 was the last great example and then militaries stopped using them.

Why?

The P229 is a much better gun overall. With the riced Glock you'll have a decent gun with a few super good parts. If you do want the Glock you should just do a full rice custom build to Glock specification with basically no Glock parts.
Safety options are all personal preference but I can say with certainty that ten pounds is greater than five and nobody handles any tool perfectly all of the time.
>>
>>34469813
CZ imo. Very soft recoil due to the slide riding inside the frame.

>>34469469
I looked it up because I was curious as to how one could have something that glowed for ten years without getting cancer from it. The glow is not caused by the tritium itself, but instead from a phosphor with a very low activation energy. The tritium acts as a power source while the phosphor glows, so it doesn't need to put out a lot of radiation.

I do this all the time when I shoot for qual. Make sure you're not holding down the slide lock, and make sure your magazine has a good spring and follower.

For me, literally every time, it will not lo k back on last round. No matter which Beretta, but only the Beretta 92/m9.

Something to watch out for
>>
>>34465115
Maximum concealability, low weight. You can fit more effective rounds in one than you could in a mousegun of the same weight. It's a tradeoff between effectiveness and capacity.

Building a long range rifle for 1000 yards. Going to be using it as a dedicated class gun. I already have a high end rifle on order, tac ops, that will be ready by the time I take a bunch of classes.

I calculated 1700$ total on everything. Here is the build.

Remington 700 sps aac sd 20in 308 1:10
Timney thin trigger 2.5lbs
XLR element chassis w/folding stock
Precision armament 20moa scope mount
Burris xtr signature rings
athlon ares btr 2.5-15x50mm mil
harris bipod 6-9 swivel notched

I already have everything but the scope. I went with this particular one vs a vortex gen2 because I liked the reticle better.

What do you anons think?

I have a winchester 70 featherweight

Trying to get the integrated rings from winchester directly since Ive been burned 3 times now trying to get a picatinny mount.

My question is, the winchester rings seem to be talley rings, except winchester sizings go standard, medium, high. And talleys are low, medium, high. Do you think the standard is equivalent to low size?

If anyone is familiar with the talley rings, which size should i get for a 42mm scope?

Im thinking the standard since I have a featherweight barrel, so I should have some clearance.

Men get panicky when you describe the material in something near their balls as "a radioactive isotope". There is no risk. Well, rad poisoning risk anyways, although I agree with Todd Green that they're largely pointless and serve to give a potential enemy a bright target in a dark room better than they aid a shooter.

Anyone have any experience with the hk45c?

Looks sexy and I like the idea of light LEM, basically just single action with a lot of take up so you don't need a safety.
>>
>>34470720
You can see them from a fair distance, not more than a few feet sure, but there's cop stories about coons using them to know where cops were while hiding in the dark, albeit unsuccessfully as they have to be caught to tell the tale. Maybe fuddlore but maybe not. When do you need them to take a shot though? If you can't see your sights because of how dark it is it's going to be hard to see your target.
>>
>>34470734
No, but I've had a couple P2000s, one with the V1 Light LEM trigger. The HK45C is basically just a P2000 in .45 soul killer.

I really liked it. The grip texture is really nice in the hand but not too aggressive. The best way I can think of describing LEM is DA/SA, where your DA pull has the same weight as the SA and both stage the same at the end, and it decocks itself when you let off the trigger completely. It's really damn good and probably the best hammer-fired trigger system available for a defensive pistol.
>>
>>34470761
Niggers oily skin reflects what little light is around.
>>
>>34470770
They're not meant to be used in pitch black, shooting at an unknown target. They're good in low and transitional light, where you can see what you're shooting at but can't clearly make out your sights, or if you're shooting from a dark spot into somewhere well lit. I think "night sights" are a bit of a misnomer as all the tritium does is let you clearly and positively see where the sights are in all lighting conditions. If you want to shoot someone in pitch black you need a weaponlight (in which case you'll also need tritium to see your sights) or night vision.
>>
>>34470687
>I agree with Todd Green
You mean the fudd who said striker fired pistols were like carrying a DA revolver halfway cocked?
>>
>>34470824
That's basically true though. The first shot of your Glock is only half cocked even if it has the same weight as the others and has roughly half the weight of a DA revolver.

Inherited a 1870s .22 pocket revolver and trying to figure out if it counts as an antique. Federal definition is made before 1890 and if it uses cartridges they cant be acquireable through normal commercial means. At the time of manufacture its caliber was only designated .22 Rimfire and I'm pretty sure its equivalent to .22 Short, but since at the time it wasn't specifically designated .22 Short would it be considered an antique? There not a lot of info on it but I'd imagine over 100+ years there's different powder load specs that could blow it up if you used certain modern ammo

>Also with precision rifles, manual action can give greater accuracy for a number of reasons
Could someone explain this meme to me?
The argument of 'more consistent indexing/locking' seems like bullshit on par with the idea from the 20's that 'autoloaders are meaingfuly weaker because 0.1 joules is stolen from recoil to cycle the action, therefore impacting the bullet because because'.

Am I wrong?
Isn't the consistency of the action entirely dependent upon the tolerances between the barrel and lugs?
Doesn't brass play a larger role when the cartridge doesn't headspace off the bullet because there is way more variance in brass than in the difference of a few mil in the action from shot to shot?

Tracers and incendiary rounds are illegal to own.
You cannot use steel jacket/core bullets while shooting in public land (this means 7n6, M855, Tulammo etc) although 9 times out of 10 nobody gives a shit. Just ALWAYS make sure to watch out for fires.

If you're shooting indoor ranges it's mostly up to the range. Some don't let you shoot steel case, some couldn't care less.
>>
>>34473180
Yes, you are wrong. As you alluded to, the name of the game in precision shooting is absolute consistency. You won't get that in an autoloader. Just for starters, they abuse the bullets on their journey from the magazine to the chamber, possibly ruining concentricity, damaging meplats, setback, etc. Semis won't guarantee proper chambering of brass that is sized specifically for a certain action (i.e. neck-sized only) because they lack the high pressure cam action of a turn bolt for chambering such rounds. So you must resize the brass to a smaller diameter (full length resizing at a minimum) to achieve reliable feeding. This further degrades accuracy potential.

That is not to say there aren't a whole shitload of autoloaders that aren't much more accurate than their operators, just that for ultimate precision you won't be looking at a semi auto.
>>
>>34472755
wut? How would the bullet design make a difference?

The only issue of shooting 38spl out of a gun chambered in 357magnum, regardless of the type of bullet, is that after firing many rounds you can build up deposits in the chamber just beyond the neck of the shorter 38spl brass that may make it hard/impossible to chamber a full length 357 until you properly clean it.

Does anyone else have a Ruger American Rimfire that has sights that are this far off?

This is my second rifle, the first got replaced by Ruger because the barrel was canted noticeably.

I'm thinking that might be the case again with this one, but if it is it's so slight I can't see it. I have to adjust the rear sight to where it is in the pic to get it to hit where I'm aiming. It's not my shooting since this isn't a problem on any of my other rifles, and the gun puts out good groups, just nowhere near center.

you do know that it isnt supposed to be center exactly right? different varieties of ammo fly differently through your gun hence why you have adjustable sights to begin with.

Like I said, this rifle is a replacement from Ruger because the original one I bought had that exact issue but worse, with the barrel being timed wrong. They assured me the one they replaced it with was fine in that regard. Of course they can be wrong, and since the tech sights on it are aftermarket and they stick up further that would make any issues with the barrel not being on right worse, they may have missed it.

I just don't want to have to put up with this on what is a brand new gun.

You don't "have money on your credit card" even if you get a refund for something.

It's credit. Meaning money that isn't yours, but will be lent to you for you to repay later. Getting a refund on a purchase made with a credit card just gives you credit back, bringing you farther away from your credit limit. It doesn't give you money thats burning a hole in your pocket or anything, unless you're a total retard that just has to spend every single dollar he has available to him.

practice. It shouldn't take collectively more than an hour to get the hang of.
Think of it like knot tying, you practice by copying the reference, then move on to doing it on your own and looking at the result, and then you apply the knot to the desired application.
Try learning like that instead of trying to learn while trying the desired application.

>>
>>34461379

I am about to be given a "Mak-90" by a family member, and he claims that it has a stamped slanted receiver (harder to find buttstocks) with a thumbhole stock installed. I've come to learn this is common on sporterized Norinco Mac-90s, but he also claims that this rifle isn't Chinese.

Is there any validity to this claim? Are there any Eastern European rifles that used the slant receiver design? Is it Chinese and he's just retarded?

I will of course verify when I get it in a few weeks, but I figured I'd ask you guys. I know very little about AK variants.

Eat shit. Go look at Gemtech's user manual. That thing you're pretending is super quiet is still 124 decibels at the action. Go pay your taxes and try out a suppressor. You won't be pleased. Most things above handguns still aren't even hearing safe at the action, despite what nice looking but worthless muzzle readings they have.

So uh, this >>34478574 was me and I appreciate your responses but it got kinda weird and hostile there and I'm still very lost.

Approximately how much louder is a suppressed .22 handgun (let's say five inch barrrel) compared to a suppressed .22 carbine (16 inch barrel), at a distance of 25 yards if that's a factor.
>>
>>34479659
Modern .22 LR, especially subsonic, burns up fast enough that anything over 10" is basically wasted powder wise. Longer barrels nowadays are for aiming and legal purposes mostly. Both are around 115-120 dB depending on the gun, can, and load - which is about as loud as a hammer striking a nail or a ceramic dish breaking according to what I believe is the UK version of OSHA.

I want to buy my first rifle soon, and want it to be an excellent firearm that I can take great care of to pass onto my kids one day. I'm convinced that the CZ 527 (carbine) is the way to go, however I'm not sure whether to get the 7.62x39 version or the .223 version.

I want to use this rifle for target shooting, but would love to get into hunting.

A few questions:
-Will the .223 version be less prone to overheating?
-What advantage does the 7.62x39 have over the .223?
-How feasible is it to run 5.56 in the .223 version and .311 in the 7.62x39 version? (will it screw up the gun?).
-What is better for long range shooting? I have heard the 5.56 is better for this, but I'm a noob.

I am in Australia, so 7.62 ammo much less useful in case I wanted to get more firearms in the same size. 223 is probably the best economically for big boy ammo, so there's that.

Cheers.

>fn replaces all their polymerwonderguns every 2-5 years. because they find a horrible flaw and have to fix it. of course almost nothing is compatible between iterations.

The fuck are you talking about? There is no glaring flaw with these or any other FN handgun.

The Fortynine was made from 2000-2008. Discontinued and replaced it with the FNP in 2006, then updated that to the FNX in 2010 with mostly new ergonomics and aesthetics to match the more aggressive .45 version. Then the FNS was released in 2011 to run side by side with the FNX. It's only now being updated into the 509, which is basically the same gun with some tweaks. You can still get support for the FNP, FNX, and FNS. The FNX will still be produced alongside the 509 and the FNS won't be discontinued for at least another two years while they slowly phase in all the new 500 series pistols.

Anyway, I don't see how stopping support for a pistol that's been discontinued 9 years is such a horrible thing.
>>
>>34479789
223 will definitely have better performance at range than 762×39, but intermediate cartridges aren't really designed for long range shooting.
>>
>>34479789
>-Will the .223 version be less prone to overheating?
Yes but not enough to matter in the real world.
>-What advantage does the 7.62x39 have over the .223?
Penetration of obstacles such as underbrush or bricks and retaining velocity (and I mean literal velocity, both speed and direction) through barriers like glass.
>-How feasible is it to run 5.56 in the .223 version
Perfectly fine.
>and .311 in the 7.62x39 version? (will it screw up the gun?).
Don't know about this one, I have the .223.
>-What is better for long range shooting? I have heard the 5.56 is better for this, but I'm a noob.
You are very correct. 7.62x39 drops like rock. I prefer the term "rainbow trajectory" because it is a magical little round but 5.56 is going to be way more straight shooting outside of some very heavy crosswinds. Neither is particularly good for long range shooting though, they were designed as assault rifle cartridges after all.
>I am in Australia, so 7.62 ammo much less useful in case I wanted to get more firearms in the same size. 223 is probably the best economically for big boy ammo, so there's that.
Ok. 7.62x39mm isn't so great I'd pay a steep premium for it. Ever. I like it because of dirt cheap bulk steel slavshit which is a tenth of a freedom penny more than dirt cheap .223.
