After a month or so you can be made a member, they'll help you through with you're own application process so you can own your own shotguns/rifles.

Just go to your local gun club like the anon said. I'm pretty sure you need a reason to own one so being part of a club is probably a good idea regardless.

I think the main difference is that the UK has a strong vetting process (can take year+) but once you get there you can own more than some americans can

the handgun laws make zero sense to me, just sticking a long barrel and thin wire stock on a pistol makes it legal (you can just remove those???)
