Chains make it unbalanced and can get caught on nearly anything from a button to a hook. Nails just scream "I'M NOT LETTING GO" when it hits anything remotely solid. Barb wire screams the same thing as Nails, but instead of anything solid it's anything from fabric to drywall.

No, just no. Making a weapon more frontheavy makes it slower to swing, but it adds mass to the equation. You are trading away velocity for mass, trying to get the most kinetic energy you can. This can be beneficial, or it can screw you over.
