1. That will be after '55, there won't be many in the file and rank who actually served in WW2
2. Logistics, better to have the same ammo and parts as the Americans, they had plenty of surplus lying around anyway
3. Panthers were sent to France and briefly in service, they were very pissed off at German rearmmament and would never have given them anything
4. most of the fighting was on the eastern front, the few stg44/G43's that were in service went to the soviets

All in all it makes way more sense for them to use US equipment

Gladly. I guess it's not that well known outside of Germany, that the country didn't have a military for over 10 years (Bundeswehr was founded on paper in 55, NVA in 56). It was very controversial from the start, west Europe didn't like the idea of Germans having weapons and Germans barely had the stomache for it as well. Those were some strange times.

since the mid 70s there is the possibility for an alternative civil service which nowadays comprises about 55% of all draftees
