why the fuck did the russians ever adopt 9mm Mak?

How is 9x18 for defense? I really want a Mak but I worry I won't be able to drop an attacker with it. I normally carry a gov size 1911 with 45 super, but sometimes I want something smaller.

Pistols aren't used all that much in military contexts. When they are, it is typically as a last ditch effort to stay alive when your rifle has run out of ammo/failed and there isn't another one within reach. Or executions.

To this end, it makes all of the sense in the world to adopt a stupidly cheap, simple, reliable pistol that WILL work. While the Tokarev was reliable, durable, and relatively cheap, the Makarov was just the epitome of those things. Also, with the effective destruction of the submachine gun, there is no need to have a handgun in the same caliber.

As for why they picked the 9mm Makarov over a .380 or .32, my guess is they wanted the strongest caliber they could put into a blowback design that could not be chambered in enemy weapons in case of capture nor easily acquired by civilian populations in case of insurrection.

It's a pistol cartridge. It's not very powerful, but it can get the job done with good shot placement.

If you carry anything in 9x18, get this ammo.
