Look up German Stosstruppen tactics in WW1. It focused on grenade usage and small unit tactics. Shooting german grenades out of the air proved to help allied forces a lot.

They were very effective due to trenches and close engagements. And like any extremely successful weapon of war, the people on the receiving end will try their hardest to impede its continued use through liberal application of whiny bullshit.

Depends how old it is.As a rule i avoid firing high brass out of any shotgun made before 1930.That being said if the action is tight it could probably handle it.
Al tough you can get new Winchester 1897 copys for around 350 and they come with a 20 inch barrel and can still slam fire like the originals.
