Precision Shooting General

Post your rifles, how much you've dumped into them, discuss loads, argue with people, get mad. We all know the drill.

I'll kick it off with my most recent purchase.

Tikka T3x CRT in 308. 20" Threaded barrel, cheap ebay muzzle brake. Vortex PST Gen II 3-15x44 FFP EBR-2C Scope zeroed at 200 yards on a 0 MOA factory base.
$1150 for the rifle, $999 on the scope. Chassis in the near future, so probably another $600-700. I might look into a Boyd's AT One stock, but part of me wants to go with a chassis just to avoid the work of pillar and glass bedding.

As for my load, I use lake city brass, CCI 200 primers, 42.0 grains of IMR 4064, and a 168 grain SMK seated at 2.87" OAL. VERY light crimp. At 200 yards, these guys grouped 1.12".

nice try for a thread op too bad for you Remington came out with a $6000 rifle.

I have a Remington 700 SPS Varmint with 26" barrel 1/12 twist. I've been thinking about cutting the barrel down to either 20 or 22". What length would be best for .308? The SPS Tactical uses the same barrel but only 20" long and still accurate. Also some people have reported an increase in accuracy using 175gr SMKs when they cut their SPS-V barrel down to 20".

I think 20" is the best for 308. 6.5CM should be 24".

Damnit, I'm debating on whether to thread my CZ 513 (cheap version of a CZ 452) or get a Savage MKii FV-SR. The trigger on my gun is absolute shit but I'm fine with it. I want to put my octane 45 suppressor on it.

I've been reading that 20" is the best for .308 but I think i've made my decision and i'm gonna cut it down to 22" (23" total 22 from lug to muzzle). I really like the look of the GAP Crusader and I am buying the McMillan A5 stock so might as well complete the look.

How do you like this scope? I'm thinking about picking one of these up. Are Gen 2 better?

>fed 210 match primers
how important are primers? I'm just getting into reloading and when I bought components they were out of federal gold medal primers so i bought regular cci primers. The rest of my components are:
168 & 175gr Sierra MatchKings
Lapua Brass
>Powder
Reloader 15 (3lb)
IMR 4064 (1lb)
Varget (1lb)
bought different powders to see which one I liked best. dont remember why i bought more reloader 15 than any of the others though

Do 140 ELDM or RDF's instead. Also, RL16 will get you better velocity and temp stability than 17.

>>34444225
It's an awesome scope; there's a reason it's pretty much the standard. I chose the gen1 over the gen2 because it's 8oz lighter.

>>34444182
Nothing wrong with more barrel, it'll give a bit more velocity
>>

are gen1s being fazed out? or just out of stock at the moment? I found some on ebay and am wondering whether or not I should jump on it.

If you would, /psg/, which brand of reloading equipment did you choose and why?

It's occurred to me that if I simply didn't buy one gun (wtf?) I could buy a complete reloading setup and start working on the knee high pile of brass I've accumulated.

I plan to reload .308, .223 and 6.5CM for precision and 9mm, .45 and .223 for blasting purposes.

>>34443011
I know a guy who would. Probably will.

Does adding a well designed brake negatively affect accuracy? I have a .300 rum and would like to be able to keep my scope on target after the shot better.
Do I need a special brake for the magnum cartridge or can I use any as long as it's .30 cal?
>>
>>34445980
Lee Classic turret press. Though I think non-precision or non-$$$ ammo is stupid to load for. I'm not a super big fan of the lee stuff but it works.

I would get a Redding T7 turret press, lee dies, two RCBS charge masters, and case prep equipment.

To summerize they went for the 20inch barrel, better accuracy because barrel is stiffier and the fps drop is correct

Just picked up a factory new Springfield M1A "loaded" a couple weeks ago.
Went to the range and shot 160 rds. at 100 yards over 2 trips.
The groups I got ranged between 2"-4" while using iron sights with sandbags in front and rear.
The load I was using was just cheap Federal XM80C NATO ball ammo.
Do these groups sound about right for my rifle/ammo combination?
Or is my autism going into overdrive thinking that my rifle isn't performing well?
>>
>>34447466
The M1A is not a precision rifle, however M80 ammo is absolute shit for accuracy, so I would consider 2-4" fine, especially with iron sights. Get a box of federal gold metal match (FGMM), 168's or 175's are fine and your rifle should be able to do < 2 MOA groups.
>>
>>34447224
Black Hills or Hornady match.

I've been extremely impressed with both. I think the BH with the SMK shoots a cunthair tighter but it's hard to argue with the BC of the Hornady ELD's if you do serious distance.
>>
>>34447493
I know technically the M1A is not precision, but I figured guys in this thread would be able to answer my question.
Thanks senpai. Will pick up some decent ammo next time.
For a rifle like a M1A, will the barrel "settle" at all after the first few hundred rounds?
Is it even a consideration?
>>
>>34447466

shot better than me with a FAL

at 100 yards I'm lucky if I can hit the paper more than a few times, but I don't shoot braced with sandbags

the big 3 battle rifles aren't particularly known for supreme accuracy, but the M1A is probably the most stable system of the 3
>>
>>34447521
It should, yes. Springfield does not lead-lap their barrels, so your first few hundred rounds will effectively fire lap it in.

It will have little if any impact on normal group size but you will see less deviation on first-round-after-cleaning and cold bore shots. It will also make cleaning easier. It's probably too late now but I do recommend following Krieger's barrel break-in procedure. Doesn't do much with lead-lapped barrels but it helps a ton (with cleaning) with production barrels.

Would the barrel break-in procedure still be useful if I cleaned every last bit of copper fouling out of the bore with some copper solvent and then used the break-in procedure?
>>
>>34447580
To aid in cleaning I mean.
>>
>>34447524
>>34447558

I'd say a g3/hk91/ptr 91 would be the best suited of the 3 for out of the box accuracy, but you're still talking about 1+ MOA with quality ammo.
>>
>>34447580
Potentially. Every barrel's different. Some guns benefit a lot, others not at all, with the majority being somewhere in between.

Owned a National match , average groups with m80 @ 100 yards floated around 1.5 " - 3" any given sunday, so I think you're fine.

Just remember the m1a's don't like slow burning, powerful powder if you intent to reload.

Remington Premier or Australian Outback

AO is the best ammo for under $0.80 a round I've ever shot, just slightly worse than Rem Premier or FGMM.

Prime is too expensive for what you get, they are charging 300$ for 200 rounds, and BlackHills popped primers in my AI so I won't pick up another box. It was 4/5 popped primers in 10 rounds, so I just stopped shooting it altogether. Same for IWI Razorcore, I popped 3 primers in 5 rounds and stopped shooting that. I would have liked for the IWI to work for me since its like 90-95cpr but oh well.
