tldr; What's the lever gun to get if you are only going to have one?

Most of my collection is 20th century milsurp (and more modern stuff). Last fall I found a good deal on an Uberti SAA 7.5" in 45 Colt, my first revolver, and it's pretty fun at the range. Got me thinking I should really have at least one "old west" rifle.

I'm not too knowledgeable on lever guns, I do know that the Winchester 1873 is an obvious choice, and there is also the 86, 92,95,96 which bear the DNA of JMB.

I do want something with a loading gate, don't want to fiddle with the older designs that have tubes fed from the muzzle end only, or tubes in the stock.

Not interested in .22lr (for my first lever gun anyway). Obvious choice is 45 Colt since I already have the SAA. 357 or 44 mag might be options, though I don't yet own anything else for those cartridges. Is 357 out of a rifle too little recoil to get an appreciation of the old west frontier rifle feel?

Are Uberti and Henry the two "replica" makers to be looking at?
>>
Marlin 1894 in 44 or 1895 in 45-70

If they made the 1894c in 357 still and I didn't shoot 44mag already, that's what I'd be doing.
>>
>>34442733
Ammoseek shows 45-70 at around $1/rnd while 44Mag has plenty of options between 44-50cents/rnd.

I don't plan to shoot a huge amount through whatever I choose, but ammo price is part of the overall equation too. I suppose I should get a Springfield Trapdoor too at some point though...
>>
>>34442727
Forgotten Weapons just did a development series on the winchester lever gats.

I would be wary of getting any new marlins since they are owned by the same shitbirds running remington into the ground.

My Russian 1895.

But if you're a cowboy guy, the 1873.
>>
>>34442856
That's a pretty lady, what kind of price do those go for?
>>
>>34442873
The last two that sold online were refinished and they went for 3000 and 3500 respectively.

>Springfield Trapdoor
Do be aware that they're old weapons, and will not stand up to loads made for modern weapons. Even with modern .45-70 rifles, you will want to steer clear of the hottest loads, as they're only really made for the Ruger no. 1 and no. 3, and according to some, the TC Encore.
The latter likely won't be a problem unless you're into reloading and have to compensate something fierce for a tiny dick with massive recoil.
Most factory ammo will likely be marked as safe or unsafe for older rifles.
>>
>>34442727
I have a 1949 Winchester '94 in .25-35 WCF.

Rounds are nearly impossible to find, and I'm going to have to start reloading, but goddamn if it isn't a smooth-shooting gun.

I also have a 197x '94 in .30-.30, and it's just as accurate but kicks more and is clearly made from inferior components.

I love my '94s, though.
>>
Anyone know how good the quality is on the Rossi lever guns? They seem to be the only readily available 357 levergats with loading gates
>>
>>34443259
I've shot the Rossi '92, in both .44 mag and .357. They both work- though, much like the original they're prone to firing pin breakage long-term.
>>
>>34443284
How easy/ expensive are those to repair? I feel like a firing pin should be fairly inexpensive but I'm not all that experienced in diy gunsmithing, though that doesn't seem like the hardest project to learn on.
>>
Anyone have a henry golden boy? It looks damn sexy and I'm getting pretty tempted to pick one up to deal with my lack of a .22
>>
>>34442873
Depends on what condition and whether it's all original or not, but expect to be hard pressed to find a functioning and safe to fire one for under $2000.
>>
>>34443111
The Euro 6.5x52mmR is basically the same damn round, and is safely usable in 99% of all rifles chambered in .25-35. PPU and a few other companies still make it.
>>
>>34442727

The Winchester 1895 doesn't use a loading gate or a tube magazine.
>>
>>34443395
Cheap but fiddly and time consuming.
>>
I have an Uberti 1873 Carbine in .45 Colt, and I love it. I especially like how well it matches my Uberti SAA in terms of color case hardening and wood, something another manufacturer probably wouldn't do.
Shoots fine, but I'm definitely scared to take it out as a real handy frontier style of gun, it's too nice. I'd recommend a Rossi 92 for a beater.

NO.

Get a Henry. Better made and not under the tentacles of Cerberus's Freedom group, which ruined Remington
>In b4 MUH GATE
Speed loaders are available. You really aren't going to do tacticool shit with a Lever gat.

>>34442873
A lot. Get the Henry Long Ranger or the BLR. The long ranger has better A E S T H E T I C S than the BLR
>>
>>34444129
I woke up in the middle of the night last week and decided to get a Long Ranger in 308 with open sights. Davidson's is currently out of them, but I am a patient man.
>>
>>34444128
Fuck you I hope it explodes in your hand
>>
>>34442727
Get a 30-30 Henry, that caliber will take down most things but like you said it is tube fed and have to load it from the muzzle, or go with a Marlin 30-30.
>>
>>34443755
I'll take a look. Thanks!

>>34444114
marlin ain't shit if it's past 2014. they had a bad stint 2009-2014.
