Hey I'm looking into getting a pistol, I have military training, but I don't know much about civilian weapons, and things like cost, advantages, and concerns. I'm interested in a Glock chambered either way, but I just wanted to know what wisdom you all have to impart.
>>
>>34442289
Before the debate blows up... try out different calibers. Pick one based on both your preference and budget. Go shoot it a lot.

You'll see a lot of terminal ballistics bullshit here soon enough, but at the end of the day, all these pistol calibers have put down someone somewhere. You like .40 over 9? Fantastic. .45 Stronk? That works too. Just get out there, shoot it, master it, and enjoy.
>>
>>34442289
I've always said I'd get either .9mm or .45, I own 2 9mm's and 1 .45 now, they both have stopping power (if 9mm doesn't have stopping power then how are cops killing so many people?) In a SHTF scenario, both are widely used calibers so you should be able to pick them up most places.
>>
>>34442289
okay, so cost, obviously .45 costs more than 9mm, advantages 9mm doesn't have a history of bouncing off car windows but you get a louder bang and get to seem scarier, concerns are you were in the military and don't know anything about guns.
>>
tl;dr pistol cartridges suck and shot placement is key. There is not magic caliber.

Focus on a gun that fits your hand and carries well first, then pick caliber second. .45 over all offers less capacity than 9's and .40s in the same size. Simply ask yourself, no matter the caliber, "Do I have enough ammo to feel comfortable?" If 8 rounds is enough for you to feel comfortable, go ahead and get that 1911. Feel its too heavy and large? Get a .45 Shield. Too little capacity? Opt for a double stack 9mm of similar size.

Ammunition cost does play a small factor too. If you're shooting every weekend, the price difference of $5-$7 a box between 9 and .45 will add up quick. If you shoot once a month and shoot maybe 200 rounds tops on your range trip, don't sweat the cost. Mind you it is a buyers market and retailers are trying to move ammo like crazy, so you can find nice deals on pretty much any round you choose.

I still am in the military, and I've done research on the rounds. I know things like .45 is technically subsonic. I didn't know the wind shield thing though, which is the sort is info I was looking for more or less. Most of my experience is with an M4 of some type though.
>>
>>34442380
yeah, most people will say .45 is better but they have been known to bounce off car windows at only 15yds away.
>>
>>34442289

Glock 19, perfect size, modern 9mm ammo(Federal HST) is just as effective as .45

>>34442289
Just skip .45, everything is fine

Glock 20
load .40sw in it

> look this up, its not an urban legend even if it would normally go against common sense

Its overbuilt for .40 since its 10mm, and because of the unique combination of factors you get no FTFs and no punched primers. Dont get a conversion barrel because then you're a sucker.

oh yeah man, he got some basic handgun and rifle training for the Matrix films and advanced training for John Wick

.22 is as deadly as 9mm but it doesn't have much stopping power. Instead it will kill someone 2 minutes later. These shootings are usually deadlier because the target gets shot like 3-5 times and they bleed out quick because it hits alot of stuff inside.

.22 is an assassination caliber, james bond would have no problem with it.

If you shoot someone in the elbow, knee, ankle, or wrist with a .357 or .44 it will sever that appendage.

wadcutters should prevent some of these issues

these are non-expanding rounds so I have no idea why the military doesn't use them, they cause alot of internal damage, and they blow a giant bleeding hole out the back of a person.

just a guess here, but one reason the 45s may be bouncing off of windshields is, if they are ball fmj variety they tend to have a very round profile while 9mm fmj is "sharper" - since fmj is the most common variety im guessing nobody tested this with other types like jhp or jfp.

the reason is because it just feels like a thud+stab no matter what you're being hit with, you need hydrostatic shock to make it do anything else (which knocks the wind out of you)

You need at least 550 ft-lb to cause that, and to be safe about 650 ft-lb. And even then the more you've got the more effective it is.

The real issue with pistol cartridge effectiveness is meat penetration, you want to be able to shoot all the way through to the spine but not shoot out the backside.

Technically 7.62mm Tokarev is the most effective pistol cartridge because its got 14" of penetration (more than any black dick). And as a small-ish size bullet its a little bit of a pinball round too.

The problem is if you miss, its very much going to be travelling through somebody's wall when it reaches their house downrange.

>.40 wadcutters

Probably because it's a target load designed for revolvers that does shit to armor at any decent range.

>>34443019
pistol rounds do not cause hydrostatic shock and never have. Saying it 'knocks the wind out of you' convinces me that you don't even know what the term means. What autistic blog did you find these stats on?

I love my .40, but I freely admit that ballistically 10mm is probably the most ideal round from the listed cartridges.

I have never heard of a kaboom from .40s&w in a G20, but I am also very wary of firing it from mine. Any solid research to back up the claim that it's safe?
