I was in the Marines as an optics tech. I worked on lasers, night vision, thermals, tank sight, LAV sights, aligned and calibrated howitzers, all kinds of shit. Got out and now have a job that pays $130k. I haven't even used my GI bill yet.

I thank my recruiter every time I think of him that he talked me out of trying to be a machinegunner. I would have gotten out and gone to work at Walmart or something, I don't know. There aren't any transferable skills when you're an 03.

The only POG ive ever known to get a job right after he got out was a helicopter mechanic and he still had to go to schools to get certs for different engines while he was on the job. Though he was hired, there were something like 1500 other people with the exact same certification who applied, he just got lucky and interviewed well.

This was in response to rapidly developing areas of technology which required specialized training in place of regular soldiering. That's a WWII era Tech Sgt Rank, when the Army and Air force split in 1947, the Rank of Technical Sergeant was retained by the AF and is the E-6 enlisted paygrade. The Army developed a "Specialist" ranking system that ran parallel to the Traditional ranks, beginning with Specialist 4 all the way through 9 ( I posted a chart in this tread). These were designed for non combat, technical fields where promotions were based on technical know how in one's specific field as opposed to general soldiering knowledge.

I was mechanized infantry and I don't have any preconceptions. EVERY part of the army is necessary. The 'grunts' are just the very sharp cutting edge of the sword. The backline troops are the rest of the metal in the blade, the grip, the pommel, the handguard. All parts that are totally necessary and without them the weapon wouldn't work. It's just a lot less glamorous. But whoc ares, right? You did your part so that the whole weapon kept on functioning.

If you go bare bones Aviation Maintenance it's a requirement to to have an A&P license but, if you say go equipment/avionics field instead this is not required.

The biggest thing is that so many people don't take any advantage of the offers they are given for a lot of things while they are in. I had so many times we had tech reps or the guys who literally created/built the systems we worked on and were going to go work on things and our guys would rather sit in the shop and be on their phones than actually go out and learn and work with these guys.
