Tula 91/30s always sell for more than Izhevsk, what is the reason for this? Is there any actual difference between them? Are there fewer of them?
>>
>>34442051
Also, does getting a Hex receiver Mosin guarantee that it was made before WWII?

Tula is more sought after by "collectors" but I'm not sure why. They're aren't any appreciable differences between the two arsenals during the war IIRC
>>
I bought an all matching Long Branch No4 Mk1* from a guy at a flea market for $125. The rifle is even in great shape, two groove barrel and the 300/600 only sights.

Haven't had the chance to take it out and shoot/get pictures of her but I just had to get my excitement out there.
>>
>>34442109

It's because they have the big commie star on them. During the war years they focused production on SVT-40s more than Izhevsk did so wartime dated rifles are less common. Pre war rifles including hex receivers are far more common by production figures from Tula compared to Izhevsk.
>>
>>34442068
It only guarantees the receiver was made before 1936 at Izhevsk and 1937 at Tula. The tang of the receiver will often have the date of production. The barrel will sometimes have a different year though usually the next year from the tang date as parts got used in January.

There are rare cases where European arsenals other than Finnish ones reused older hex receivers on newer barrels, these are very uncommon.

Little word of warning though, the two groove barrels apparently don't like modern boat tail ammo. I bought a long branch back in November, and every round I sent down range was keyholing. However the crown on mine was pretty worn out until i replaced the barrel, so that could have been part of the problem.

sadly some people don't have the dedication for treating their guns (especially milsurp) properly, so they don't want to go through the trouble of spending time to clean every single part completely to get all the rust out. Not that I'm accusing anybody here acting like this, but there are those kind of people out there unfortunately.

First of all, no. Most of them aren't. Second, the percentage of chromium in ones that do is insignificant towards their corrosion resistance. Third, chromoly and even stainless steels and can do rust.

So, my grandfather passed away in 2011, and left a decent gun collection, my grandmother has decided to let me and my aunt choose what we want and sell the rest. One of the things I'm interested in is a modified SHTLE dated 1917. It has been sporterised with an aftermarket stock and the metal fixtures have been removed. He likely held on to the original parts although they may be in poor condition. If that is the case where would I buy spare parts and\or a new stock. More pics to follow.

It's not really worth it to "restore." You'll spend more money than what it's worth in just parts. Most stock sets you will find will be shitty Indian DP wood or shitty Australian Coachwood without the recoil plates. Look for the original wood and parts if you want to truly restore it.

It is interesting that the rifle was converted from a MkIII* to a MkIII after the war.

For the Brits yellow paint means "drill purposes only" which means it's not fit to fire live ammo.

I'm pretty sure it's hit or miss with Classic on some of their guns. I got one of the 1895 Chileans (pic related) from him about 2 months ago and I love it, but I've heard some pretty bad stories. Then again, I'm probably not going to buy from them again, since I have a replacement ejector box coming in for my Chilean since the ejector is broken on mine.

Hope your M39 is good anon.

Interrupted oxidation is actually it's own form of anti-rust protection as unintuitive as it sounds. Bluing is actually an interrupted controlled rust/oxidation. Removing rust with an abrasive that is harder than the rust but softer than the underlying metal, can create a patina that is resistant to further oxidation.

This happens with aluminum all the time. Most aluminum parts/products have an aluminum oxide layer that forms very quickly but prevents the further oxidation of the aluminum. Aluminum oxide, while only usually being a thin layer, Has a very high hardness value so never use aluminum cleaning rods on your barrels. The oxide layer on the rod can scratch your rifle's bore.

Literally the most retarded myth. The M1903 was designed to fit US doctrine from the outset. The M1917 was a stopgap weapon thrown together at the last minute. The national arsenals were tooled to make the M1903, bayonets and all the spares. The benefits of the M1917 are easily outweighed by the fact that you either A. Have to retool completely or B. Depend on a 3rd party.

They are different models (sometimes different models purchased/made by the same country at different times as Mauser design improved) sometimes made domestically, sometimes made in Germany/Austria/Czechoslovakia/Belgium for export to those countries. There were about 50 countries that adopted Mauser rifles so a brief summary about each is impossible.

It's very strong action, I won't address cock on open vs. cock on close because it's more of a personal preference but it is a factor, front locking lugs give better mechanical accuracy.

When they appeared on the market in the late 19th century there were really few bolt action rifles that offered such great performance while not having relatively complicated or fragile bolt which led to them being commonly used by many nations that couldn't develop their own design. Yugoslavia, Poland, Czechoslovakia, several south American countries, Sweden and many many others used it, which made it extremely common. On top of it, 1903 springfield action being a copy of Mauser's makes them more familiar to the biggest market in the world for civvie firearms. This means that you've had tons of them everywhere at one point of time and majority of important manufacturers copied the action and made sporting/hunting rifles using it. The action being very strong allowed for rechambering the rifles into whatever cartridge was at hand(the fate of many Arisaka rifles, which use slightly modified mauser action) making it very, very common design.

You could say they were the AK of their times - reasonable quality coupled with reasonable price. Of course Swiss straightpulls or even some more expensive Mannlichers(Greek ones for example) were better rifles at the time(with Ross being gucci AR, no not AR, gucci SCAR or HK 416 or something of the period), but they were also more expensive so it was obvious trade-off. Had French came out with MAS36 36 years earlier and exported it widely and it would probably take Mauser's spot if I can be honest.
