Armyfag here, we had amnesty boxes in theater during the Iraq war for soldiers that had illegally acquired munitions that they couldn't take back to the US because command didn't want them tucking a grenade away in an air conditioning unit or port-a-potty or whatever. One day they found a bag of fingers in an amnesty box, and I'm pretty sure they hid cameras pointed at the box after that.

In my country, when such "action" takes part (5-10 years), they inspect the weapons (for crimes and safety) and you can keep them (under current laws, so it's nearly impossible to get permit for a bazooka etc...). Of course, they get registered, but IMO it's quite good approach - for both government and citizen who accidently found an old G88 under the floor. On the other hand, I have heard about the most rare things disappoved for safety and "confiscated"by some clerk, not even fit to delaboration, so we all know what happened..

Except that most of the guns seemed to be unwanted by museums, so they're going to be destroyed anyway. The historic guns turned in apparently belonged to members of a resistance group that got executed by the krauts. But maybe we'll get lucky and our military museum in copenhagen will take some of the ones that aren't used in exhibits about our resistance history.

Not at all. They can just stroll in and ask to check your underpants drawer for drugs. Not pointing them to the right drawer is interference with a police investigation. It's a lot harder to become a police officer here than America, and they usually have a senior officer watching over them for many years, so abuse of power is low and also a crime you can report if you feel an officer is harassing you.
