I live in the south and travel for work between 3 major cities in a very red state.

Due to the entire world moving here we aren't as red or united as people say. The cities wouldn't defect, some people might but it wouldn't be an actual rebellion. There's so many Indians, middle westerners, Asians and south Americans that we are no longer Texans, much less Americans. The urban areas wouldn't defect and every Cuckservative with a "don't tread on me" bumper sticker would be attacked by the mob within a few days of not having power.

Pretty unlikely, the local state governments mimic federal law close enough that control would keep passing down the ranks.

Contingency plans in the event of a nuclear war and other catastrophes have been locked in dusty file cabinets for over half a century in various places.

The question is whether or not they are prepared to handle it in the long term. Looters will be the most common element if there is a collapse in local control.

Anyhow, here's my $0.02.

Civil war is astronomically unlikely. We don't have a clear geographical demarcation between any major factions who might kick things off.

What I could see happening, though, is some regional Balkanization in the event of something like a grid down scenario. Different areas would come back up at different rates, and there could be some pretty stiff competition for the limited resources that the remnant of the fed govt has available.

And then some foreign power tries to meddle.

It's possible, I think the memes and boasts predicting an easy victory for the right is misguided. Yes right wingers tend to own more guns then leftists, but the left is starting to arm up, not to mention guns are not the only means to wage war bombs, chemicals, fire, etc. Also the belief that the military will defect to the right is somewhat misguided as well, the demographics and recent changes in recruiting policy have led to far more leftists then ever before in the military, also leftists would likely not discriminate between fighter and civilian if they even suspect someone of being right wing they would likely kill them as brutally as possible to send a message. Not to mention the differnt factions that would likely rise up and try and take a go for power, literal Nazis, Communists, Anarchists, Libertarians, traditional Republicans, Strict Constitutionalists, neoConfederates, BLM and white nationalists taking the chance regardless of why the war started to engage in some ethnic cleansing, secessionist movements from the state level to the local level, and that's just in the US, I doubt foreign nations wouldn't get involved though just because the opportunity would be there, from supplying one side or the other to actively engaging in bombing runs or even boots on the ground operations. It would be long, bloody, and it's hard to predict who would win.
