The KV1 and 2 were good examples of the pros and cons of overengineering. On one hand, almost nothing in the early Nazi arsenal could kill a KV1. On the other hand, you could run away from one and call in artillery. Didn't have a tank or car? Just find a river and cross it. The KV was so heavy that most bridges couldn't hold it.

Don't get me started on the gun. It's basically siege artillery. Sure, it'll hurt if it hits but between the rate of fire and unstable platform you're going to have issues with that.

sounds more like underengineering then

Reminder that Finnish "engineers" chose KV-2 out of all the fucking vehicles they encountered as their inspiration.

When the KV-2 came into service, the Germans still relied on Pz.IIs armed with 20 mm autocannons. The troops still carried 30 mm anti-tank guns. Had Stalin not given too much credit to Hitler's common sense (Stalin actually thought Hitler was not stupid enough to start a war on 2 fronts, so Stalin went on with his purge of the officers), in the hands of competent generals things would have been different.

he's referring to the lone soviet tank

Except they did not. What the Finns were after was in essence an assault gun built from captured Soviet tanks, but by that that time only captured tanks still left unused were BT-series tanks. Since BT-series tanks had narrow hull and driver in centre of front hull, there was no practical way to install bigger gun there. Hence only way was to built new big-ass turret and place the bigger gun there. Besides having much too large of a turret BT-42 had nothing in common with KV-2.

The KV-2 was basically intended to be an self propelled gun. heavily armored with a big as fuck gun so that if an enemy bunker or fortification was in your way the KV-2 could make it disappear. it was never really intended to be a "tank" as much as a nutcracker. of course it did a great job of being the a tough bastard to crack for enemy tanks, but this was mostly circumstantial more than a virtue of its design. Even at Raseiniai, if the legends are true it mostly engaged anti-tank guns, doing what it was designed to do not true tank to tank warfare. Also as the war went on, german guns got bigger and the KV-2 became less useful, and production stopped in 1941.

All in all its a great example of how blind everyone was in terms of armored warfare would be like in early WWII, with the Germans not understanding the tactical importance of armor and firepower and the soviets not understanding the limitations of a weapon like this in a war of maneuver, and how something that was so brutally effective at it's job was just deemed unnecessary as the war continued.
>>
KV2 couldn't rotate its turret unless it was on completely flat ground, at grades over 2% it couldn't rotate
