Can someone explain to me what the appeal of having a pistol grip on a shotgun is?
I've tried shooting one and it seems like it's objectively worse than just having a stock on it.

It makes the shotgun easier to use for door breaching. Or if you're in an area where you absolutely cannot use a stock.

That would make sense, for like enclosed areas or hallways where you don't need to aim
Portability and ease of use in confined spaces
For going ghost.

But it's really only good for door breaching. If you can, always use a stock on your shotgun

Portability is nice, but I also like the option to fold a stock out when space isn't an issue.

/co/ was a mistake.

Yeah, I went shooting with the pistol grip on once and immediately put the stock back on.
Even in a home defense situation I would prefer the stock.

There's nothing wrong with folding stocks on shotguns. I was talking about Pistol Grip Only.

I was talking about not even having a folding stock on.
Just a pistol grip

PGO shotguns aren't fun to shoot I learned that the hard way. When I was 20 I filed a Form 1 and built an Ithaca 37 Stakeout clone. It was brutal to shoot and hurt my hand really fucking bad. I can see why they made them in 20 Guage, and even then they didn't see much use outside of police.

the appeal seems to be people think they're cool or like to thumb their noses at the atf.

How uncomfortable is that thing?
I'd like an older police 870 with the folder for those aesthetics but I always imagine they feel like shit to actually shot.

I have a plastic top folder stock and it isn't bad. You just gotta lean into it is all.

This.
But I would still get he original Remington factory folder if you can. The ones being made by ATI aren't exact copies of them and the Remington ones are cooler looking.

Because they allow a much lighter and smaller shotgun than can legally be had with a stock. I'm gonna buy one as soon as I can get a reliable answer on whether or not these things are legal in Pennsylvania.

I honestly don't find it that uncomfortable but I'm used to it by now. My friends who shoot it really don't like it. Eh, it's not that bad.

Portability and, to a lesser extent, concealability. Though it's not really a thing anymore, old school mobsters and leos liked short gripped shotguns because you could easily hide them under a coat or use them from a car. It was a cheap and easy way to drastically increase your firepower.
