Didn't see a thread on precision rifles up atm and I've got a few questions. I've recently become very interested in getting into long range shooting, but I've only ever shot a beat to fuck remington 700 that was my grandfathers. Where should I start as far as rifles and glass? I handload so any unicorn caliber is fine, but I've been leaning toward .338 lapua because of memes. Pic only tangentially related.

Rim fire is a great option for starting real percision shooting, Pushing 17 hmr and .22lr out to 200 yards gives you enough to really start understanding whats going on with your rounds down range, and doesn't break the bank.

Caliber wise it really depends on exactly what you're doing and how far you wanna push your self, .338lap is a great round, but it's costly and not the most user friendly imo.

Rifle wise, lots of people suggest savage, but honestly they have a shorter life span than say a Tikka or a Remington

>Reminton sucks
Yes, so do most other factory rifles, aftermarket is king in the LRPS game.

Glass wise i've had good luck with SWFA personally, and would suggest it to anyone looking to pick the sport up, that being said there are other options.

Again, just my .02. Welcome to the money pit.

I've got a 10/22 and an ar already, but I didnt really count them. I can see generally, especially with the .22 where the rounds start to drop I'd that's what you mean.

And I didn't mean to say remington sucks in general, just that the rifle I used, and the glass in particular was pretty unforgiving.
>>
>>34430271

The 10/22 has large aftermarket support and would be a fine rifle to build a trainer on.

The bit about Remington was more for the rest of the folks reading, /k/ hates Remington it seems.

I've got a 338, had a 308 and also currently have a 6.5 Creedmoor. There is no reason to get a 338LM if you're not shooting beyond 1,000yds. You want a flat shooting rifle that has enough oomph to see/hear the impact, doesn't eat up barrels, and recoils the smallest amount possible.

Cost wise for 6.5CM:
$0.25 for 140gr RDF
$0.13 for 42gr of RL-16
$1.10 for Lapua brass (15+ reuses?)
$0.035 for primer

338LM is $1/shot with 300gr SMK, Lapua brass ($3/case), H1000 (82-92gr). Out of a 17lb rifle with a huge as fuck brake, the recoil still pulls you off target and you will not be able to spot your shots. I can watch hits with 6.5CM at 400 yards (24x) and shoot 200rds in a day without getting beat up by it.

tldr;

>Rifle:
Savage 10-FCP/SR, Savage 10T-SR, Tikka CTR T3x, Bergara, Howa barreled action all in 6.5CM with 24" barrel (don't do a 20").

>Glass:
SWFA SS 10x, Primary Arms Mildot 4-14x44 mrad, Vortex PST 6-24x50 ebr-2c mrad, Vortex PST Gen2 5-25x50 ebr-2c mrad.

Im trying to get into it and just recently purchased a Tikka T3x Tac A1 with 6.5CM. Its my first ever rifle/gun and can honestly say i love it. I got an Athlon Helios BTR Mil dot scope 6-24x50 and hav absolutely no problem seeing the target at 300 Yards. I cant wait to go longer but all the ranges around me here in IL that are above 300 are club only and ya need to know somebody to get in. Even then the longest here that i have seen is 600 yards.

Tikka T3x Tac A1
Athlon Helios BTR 6-24x50
Seekins 1.26" Extra High Rings
Atlas BT10-LW17 V8 Bi-pod

Again for a first time shooter i love it.
>>
>>34430465
I love the set up. Is the stock sturdy/comfortable? And what kind of distances do you take it out to?
>>
>>34430546

Sturdy yes, Comfortable that depends. When on a bench its manageable but i might not have it adjusted right yet. only put 125 rounds down range so far. However when prone yes the butt is is comfortable.

With the folding stock, when it is folded it does wiggle a little so there is some concern about eventual wear/scratch marks. but when locked it is rock solid

So far 300 Yards since that is the longest around here that isnt "invite only club"

I am the wrong person to be posting here, because I kind of started off long distance shooting on the wrong rifle, so I am very biased.

>>34430337
This guy is exactly right. The 338 is basically chambered in $5 bills and it goes through a barrel about every 1000 rounds.

I would suggest .308. It's very common, and not too bad for price. Even hand loaded stuff is pretty reasonable.

My " daily ( over 5k rounds through mine now ) shooter " is a little bit older AI AE MKII. The MKI, 2's and 3's can be had for VERY reasonable. They are probably one of the best, if not THE best " factory " rifle you're going to find. I have shot 5R's, SAKO's and some other nice guns. But the AI is just in a class of it's own. It's pricey. When you get it though, you don't have to worry about it fucking up.

I recently shot 1000 yards for the first time, used a .300win mag that was pretty beaten up but still did ok, but I then used 6.5CM such a good round for target, so much that I'm considering buying one over a .308 (been putting cash away for an AI in .308).
I'd highly recommended buying something in 6.5CM, its pretty cheap, accurate and has very low recoil.

I read that 6.5 creed chews up barrels slightly faster than a .308 will. I also read that you might get slightly more than 2k shots out of it before serious accuracy degradation occurs. Obviously, that's a fuckload of money and if you can afford to shoot it that much, then the cost of the barrel would be nothing in comparison. My question is, where would you even go to get replacement barrels for a tikka like this when the time comes? Preferably still with muzzle threads? After all it's not exactly as common as a 700 which everyone and their grandma makes barrels for.
>>
>>34431718
I thought about .308, but I'm an autist who only likes to have 1 gun in each rifle caliber (shotguns and handguns are different), and I already have plans for a scar. The reason for this, I feel, is that if I had a .308 bolt action and a .308 scar let's say, I'd end up just picking a favorite while the other gathered dust.
>>
>>34430465
How many picatinny slots does that bipod take up?
>>
>>34429953
Learning how to shoot long range with .338 lap isn't a bright idea. You need a flat-shooting low-recoil rifle that can take you up to maybe 800 yards thats cheap to shoot. If you handload, the cost of .338 might not be that bad, but once you start wearing out barrels, it will be no bueno. Get a 6.5 swede or as the other guy recommends, creedmore. Get a decently cheap rifle and learn how to use it, then buy a race gun (such as a .338) otherwise you're probably not going to be able to take advantage.

You're probably not going to outshoot a rem 700 at the start anyway.

I'm in the market for a precision rifle, and yesterday I went to the local Bass Pro (Yeah, yeah...) and fingerfucked a Tikka T3 (felt great), a Browning X3 (also felt pretty good) and some low-weight Kimber garbage that the salesman was pushing (action felt like shit, apparently it "gets better after I run a box of ammo through it").

Anyways, I'm eyeing the Tikka right now, but someone recommended I consider a Howa as well. Are they right, or is the Tikka the way to go?

>Hard Mode: Is the Browning X3 competitive with the Tikka?
>>
>>34434325
Tikka are great, less aftermarket but good shooters

Look at Savage as well, you can easily replace the barrels without a lot of gunsmithing costs if you plan to really get into it

>>
>>34432392
there's certainly nothing wrong with that especially when you reload your own ammo.
I currently have a Rem700 in .308 and am buying all my reloading equipment. Kinda wish I would have chosen a different caliber like 6.5 Creedmore, .260 Rem, or 7mm-08.

All my family and friends use 6.5mm bullets so I want to be a snowflake and get 7mm-08 for my next rifle. It has a high bc so I would imagine it be a good option for long range shooting. Bullet weights are similar to .308 as well so could also be a good option for hunting if you wanted to hunt. Does anyone here use 7mm-08? is it a good option for long range precision shooting?
>>
>>34433814
i have a rem 700 sps varmint and want to change out the stock. Whats the quality on the magpul? Also how much did it cost to thread and attach the bolt knob?
>>
>>34432387
The "2k rounds and caput" myth is just that. It'll last almost as long as a .308 will. It's only a medium velocity rifle round shooting rather take bullet weights. The magic of 6.5 is the bullet designs themselves, but understanding that requires more brain power than alot of the people espousing the myth have to part with.

The biggest most obvious drawback is price. While match grade .308 and basically any 6.5cm factory loads are going to be comparably priced, there's no such thing as garbage 6.5cm. it's all match ammo, so you're going to spend more on ammo as a rule, but at least you're getting what you paid for

To what sort of ranges can I expect reliable precision out of a SCAR 16S? I've read about professionally badass SOF motherfuckers taking ragheads down at ~700 yards with M4s, is this a reasonable "precision shooting" goal or 50% luck and 50% exaggeration?
Also robust optic suggestions for 0-(your answer here) yards would be very much appreciated.

question about muzzle brakes: I'm looking for one that is relatively inexpensive but also effective. How is the M4-72 by Precision Armament? Perhaps not surprisingly, the muzzle brake market sells a giant load of snake oil and most muzzle brakes work about as well as the next with some exceptions. Check the link and pic related to give you an idea of what I mean. Generally speaking, unless you get a straight up meme-teir comp performance will be roughly equitable. I personally have a JP competition slim and love it. I prefer the less flashy, pragmatic compensators to the more rediculous high speed designs, but some people like the Gucci look and honestly the difference in performance isn't enough to throw a fit over.

Bottom line, you aren't shooting yourself in the foot by going cheaper

Also by chance do you know home much the side blast is on a .308 using a muzzle brake? in terms of affecting the shooter next to me.
>>
>>34435306
Well, it'll depend on the load you're shooting and barrel length. That being said, it's common courtesy to either choose a bench well away from other shooters or barring that let them to know to expect it. That will definitely go for any .308. most people are chill so long as you warn them
>>
>>34435477
I normally go with my brother, cousin, or a few friends so it would be them getting blasted. I don't want to ruin their shooting though. There's a 99.9% chance im going to go with the SureFire that has the attachment feature and I will prob add the Warden so help with side blast if it's an issue for the people on my sides.

I was once next to a guy with a .338 lapua magnum and that blast was ridiculous.

Deciding between 2 scopes but open to other suggestions in the same price range ~1000$

Viper pst gen 2
2-10x32 FFP
3-15x44 FFP

I will be using this for long range classes not exceeding 1200yds

Rifle is a generic rem 700 sps heavy contour 1:10 .308 on an xlr element chassis. Plan is to eventually shoot the barrel out with these classes and then decide what stock and barrel configuration i like. I have the chassis just because it was free from a buddy, and it eliminates the need for bedding a stock and such and i can use mags.

Im leaning toward the 2-10x, but would like opinions.

once you get past about 12x you run into distortion issues like mirage and such, and the eyebox starts moving around when not completely still.

This is an issue with most scopes. Now if were talking top tier schmidt and bender level hardware, its gonna be good. But for most scopes under 1500, anything above 15x is going to be not so great to use in the field and classes.

Realistically, you only need a 10x for 1000 yds.

Patriot Valley Arms makes prefits that you can put on with a nut wrench and a go-gauge. $550 with a threaded muzzle and there's lots of reports of them being < 1/2 MOA. If you want to do traditional route, any competent gunsmith will do it.

Don't listen to these idiots here. Its a precision rifle thread so don't expect any unbiased opinions.

When I was in the Marines we were hitting man sized silhouettes with the M16A4. We had to do it offhand, sitting down on an ammo can, and prone.

I was able to consistently score hits on those man sized targets with Iron sights. And I did it as a POG with barely any training.

So i can definitely see a SOF guy with some fine tuned M4 doing it a bit further. Of course, not with much precision but for combat still possible.

Though to be honest. Perhaps I had it easier since my rifle was a 20 inch barrel as opposed to the 14, 16, or even 10 inch barrel they might be carrying.
>>
>>34438052

My dumbass forgot to mention I did all this at 500 yards.

Again, precision is measured differently in every gun. 600 to 700 yard shots with a 5.56 is precision shooting.

They are both very high performing rifles. Tikka has a smoother action and a better stock trigger. I wouldn't be calling it a "meme." I teetered between the the Tikka T3x CTR and The HOWA HCR for probably 2-3 weeks before I settled on the Tikka. I'm probably going to throw it into a MDT Tac21 chassis to get a nice low bore axis and call it done. I also just like to support Finland. I have family around there.

Anyone looking to build a good precision setup really can't go wrong with Tikka or Howa.

what you mention is subjective and does not justify the 2-3+ times price tag of the tikka over the howa. the howa action is smooth. ofc you can be a spastic like nutnfancy and jerk the bolt like a retard in an attempt to be fast and cool and thereby egg out any action - that however is not the rifle's fault. smooth and fast bolt action comes from deliberate and precise unlocking-pulling-pushing-locking (without resting your arm on the open bolt etc.) of the bolt that's not utter garbage..

I don't know where you're finding Tikkas for 2-3x the price of Howa. I'm looking at 1500's and the T3x's and they're about the same price. The Howa tactical precision rifle was about $1k and so is the Tikka CTR which is their "tactical" precision rifle. I paid a tad more for stainless and I made it out after taxes and all that jazz at $1150.

And on action smoothness, it's not about being "fast" it just feels better. It's like working an Enfield bolt and then working a Krag bolt. The Krag is buttery smooth in comparison. I'd much rather feel that all day.
