Here's my uncle John, he's 90 years old. He was an engineer in the Army until 'Nam, where he transferred to Armored. He finished his career in 1967, shortly after his brother Joe got killed.

Post your veteran relatives

My grandpa served in the Navy during WWII. He served aboard the Destroyer Escort USS Slater. He participated in the capturing of the German submarine U-505, which is now on display in Chicago he also has his name listed among many others who helped in the effort of capturing the U-505. The ship is also a museum ship located Galveston, Texas.

Not entirely sure what he did on the USS Slater. Dad told me he was a Cook, and Gramps told me that was BS. Never did find out for sure. But my family visited the U-505 exhibit when it opened in 2004.

Grandad (Dad's side)
>his dad died in jail
>when a new kid was born the oldest had to leave
>17 in 1945, missed his chance to enlist, and basically supported his house hold while great grandad was in jail
>fuck mill work, as soon as his brother is old enough to hold a job he joins the army
>mechanic in Korea when the Chinese were at the border
>Chinese restaurant opened across the street and I swear that brought out the racist in him <3

Grandad (mom's side)
>old as shit by the time WW2 came, had already been in the Navy and left
>had decades of construction experience, so he joined the Seabees.
>was working at a VA hospital in the 70s, fell off a ladder, had to be flown to another VA hospital where he died

Uncle (mom's side)
>spoiled Golden child of my grand dad
>would routinely need to be picked up drunk in highschool
>oh shit Vietnam
>oops I accidentally learned German so I could get sent to Berlin
>died of cancer last year, poor guy fucking went into a dying industry (film development) so he spent his last couple years working at Walmart

Bonus: GFs dad
>gulf war vet
>alcoholic
>survived cancer but hasn't recovered because he won't stop drinking
>seriously so much drinking

Grandpa was a tail gunner in a B-24 Liberator. Almost died several times. No pics on phone. I wish I could speak to him again. Lost him seven years ago.

Great great great great grandpa:
> Joined 7th Kentucky Calvalry during the civil war
> Fights for Union
> Comes home and accidentally blows finger off
> "Wanna kill more rebs"
> Enlists as regular infantry
> Survives War
> 1890's
>Government denies him pension and so he has to prove he didn't go awol or anything

Great grandpa:
> Fights in World War Two
> Supposodely has an affair overseas with a German lady with black hair with a white stripe down the middle sort of like a skunk
> May have German relatives
> Dad always said he never talked about his experiences and moved through the woods like an Indian

Great Uncle:
> Fights in World War Two
> Catches a bullet in April of '45
> Name on memorial in front of court house

Grandpa
> Gets drafted into 'Nam
> War is over before he goes to boot camp or something.
I never really got the full story on why he didn't get to go, but I know he would've went if he had to. He ended up serving as a deputy sheriff and before that he worked for the county grading roads and plowing snow in the winter

>Grandpa
>Nam

What the fuck how old are you

Grandfather drafted into Korean War
> Drafted, gets put in charge of his " squad " in basic
> Not racist at all, what so ever. Nigger in his " squad " thinks that he is
> In chow line, nigger stabs him in the gut. Nigger stabbed thick belt. Barely cuts grandpa.
> Happened so quick, Grandpa didn't know what happened... But other bystanders in chow line see
> Bystanders proceed to stomp nigger into the mud. Literally. Almost kill him
> Nigger spends 25 years in Levavenworth
> Grandpa finished boot camp, top of class. Gets sent to technical school to be mechanic.
> Gets promoted very quickly to Master Sgt.
> Put in charge of Tank Transport Unit ( 7th Infantry Division )
> Has to go out in middle of night, fish tanks out of battle field that were blown up during day to take back to base for repairs.
> Gooks show up and ambush him one night. He kills 2 of them, during fight, falls off cliff. Breaks both legs and arm. Crawls back to base
> Purple Heart
> Continues combat after healed.
> Completes 4 tours of duty ( I actually have that ribbon, with his Purple Heart in my safe )

He was a god among men. He never raised his voice, never laid a hand on me or any of us grandkids. Nicest person you would ever meet. Was scared to death of him till the day he died. Not scared, respect. He was a really big guy back when he was younger. He was 6'5 back in the 50's. His ring finger goes clear to the base of my thumb. One of the most amazing people I was ever lucky enough to have in my life.

I don't have them in detail, but here goes.

One time the plane landed with only one engine functioning properly.

One time a large hole was blown in the fuselage.

The one story I have details of follows:
>plane has taken some pretty bad damage (might have been in me of the two incidents I said, but might be desperate)
>pilot says "prepare to bail out!" Over headset
>grandad takes off headset and gets out of turret to put on chute (he was too large to sit inside with the chute on)
>gets to bomb bay doors
>guy across the doors motions down with his thumb
>grandad grabs ripcord and starts walking toward open bay doors
>guy across from him starts waving his hands frantically
>after he had taken off his headset, pilot had said to lighten the plane
>tfw you might have not existed because your grandpa jumped out of a working plane
>>
>>34431570
My uncle who recently passed was in his late 60's or early 70's and fought in Nam.
>>
>>34431570
Lol how dumb are you? Just about all nam vets are gonna be in their 60s or older now. 1970 was 47 years ago.
>>

I've seen U-505. It's totally worth it to visit Shitcago to see. It's really fucking cool.
>>
My father:
>drafted into vietnam
>bad eyesight so ended up working behind a desk mostly
>found his service medal and a letter he wrote home after he died
>letter made it clear he hated it over there

My uncle Kenny:
>drafted into vietnam
>good eyesight so actually went into the shit apparently
>came home fucked
>drank heavily, culminating with him ramming his car into a concrete wall
>he walked away, the 18 year old girl in the passenger's seat died instantly
>goes to jail
>has just recently came back to talk to the family after his self-imposed exile
>I want to ask him about vietnam but I know he won't want to tell me

My uncle Gary:
>some form of officer
>rode a desk the whole time he was over there
>just as straight-laced then as he is now
>has a comfy pension
>>

My great grandpa was with the Nationals in Spanish Civil War. He probably just spent his days shooting commie prisoners and letting their bodies in some ditch next to a road.
He had a tattoo. Some say it was his wife's portrait. Other say it was Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera.

I've got a few,

Great Uncle
> U.S. Marine in WW2
> Fought the Japanese in the Pacific
> Near the end of the war was shot in the back of the right knee by a pothole sniper
> Honorably discharged, allegedly shot a dozen Japs and killed half of them, was a crackshot so I don't doubt it
> After the war, got into machining and died at the age of 62, leaving three kids behind

Other Great Uncle
> U.S. Marine in WW2
> Fought the Japanese in the Pacific
> Didn't see much combat, killed two Japs on some island, said it felt kind of weird seeing the corpses
> Came home, not much fanfare, still alive

Other Other Great Uncle
> U.S. Navy in WW2
> Fought the Japanese in the Pacific
> Helped operate an artillery piece, didn't kill any Japs personally
> Came home, died at 76, never married, and allegedly died a wizard

Great Grandpa
> U.S Marine in WW2
> Fought the Japanese in the Pacific
> Saw a shitload of combat, said he was lucky to be alive
> Allegedly killed over a dozen Japs, one of them with a knife, but was shot and recovered twice through the course of the war
> Didn't like to talk about the war, but often talked about how Japanese equipment was shit, but that they made quality boots
> he had tiny feet, and would steal them off of corpses
> Came home, had 8 children before he died at 82

Bonus: Crazy Cousin
> Pudgy meth-addled trucker, attempted to join the U.S. Army and fight in Vietnam
> Neglected to tell them he has a rare disorder, which causes him to fall unconscious under extreme stress
> i.e, boot camp
> dismissed from service two weeks after enlisting, drill sergeant was disgusted with him
> when drunk, tells exaggerated stories about how boot camp was the best time of his life and how the USA won Vietnam

I'd enlist myself, but I've got severe asthma and I wouldn't be able to meet the physical requirements.
