Anatomically modern humans got by just fine for hundreds of thousands of years without modern conveniences like agriculture and on-tap potable water.
Civilization is a decadent luxury that will only exist as long as its ceaselessly-expanding appetite for resources can be sustained; it's only a matter of time before it collapses under its own rotting weight and vanishes and is forgotten like a dream upon waking.

You need vertical orginization because people are retarded. Even if you yourself
would be fine without it, you need it to keep the hoards of retards in line. Also every
single animal on earth participates in a dominance heirarchy, whether you accept it
conciously or not. Humans had to good sense to regulate heirarchy and that is the
only thing that seperates us from mad max. Anarchy works if you have very few
people and lots of space, but we are well beyond that point. Leave it to the
"educated" anarchist to rub it in everyones face that he's reading.

By the way, everyone here reads. The ones who say otherwise are baiting, and
probably read more than you do.

I've been reading a lot of Kafka stories, the Metamorphosis in particular. The prose feels pretty off, and I'm saddened by the fact that I'm not fluent in German. In the original German, the prose is said to be extremely good, with almost every sentence being punchy. To give an example of this, here's how the opening line is normally translated.

>As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect.
Which sounds fine for an opening, I guess.

The original German went
>Als Gregor Samsa eines Morgens aus unruhigen Träumen erwachte, fand er sich in seinem Bett zu einem ungeheueren Ungeziefer verwandelt.

Back in German class, I used to amuse myself by just straight up translating German text into English one-to-one, grammar be dammed. I decided to do the same thing here, with the help of Google Translate, and got:
>As Gregor Samsa one morning from troubled dreams awoke, found he himself in his bed to an enormous 'vermin'* transformed.
>*Ungeziefer is weird, and is the thing that gives translators the most trouble with the first line. Its meaning is literally 'an animal unfit for sacrifice,' and it's mostly used to mean bug.

The structure of this sentence is interesting. In my limited experience, I've found that it's not too uncommon to find similar examples of 'subject to object verbed' when you translate word for word, but it does feel different. Most word for word German translations parse closer to English, almost feeling Shakespearean. I just love language and could sperg about it for hours, sorry.
>>
>>34431789
Not fluent but I do speak some sort of bretty gud-tier German. I don't see the shakespearean feeling of that opening line. The English is as close as it can get. (I'd prefer unquiet for unruhigen though).

Ungeziefer is usually "vermin" which has a similar connotation in English (in my mind at least). Something that is bothersome/disgusting/needs to be removed as opposed to insect/bug which seem almost clinical or taxonomic.

Give The Trial a go in German (Der Prozess), shit's dank as fuck.

>cringey and defeatist
It's mathematically straightforward.
The Earth is a certain size, and will not grow larger.
It has a certain quantity of natural resources, which will not increase.
Therefore, our modern fantasy of limitless economic and population growth is, to put it mildly, unrealistic.
Expanding into space would just kick the can further down the road and make the inevitable fall of the Malthusian Sword of Damocles that much more devastating for our posterity.

Try "Fighting Patton" by Harry Yeide.

>>34431849
I read that with my Grandfather when I was a kid. He was a sailor through and through, even though he made his living as an insurance salesman (well, bar insurance on the Columbia River, but you know). He served on a destroyer escort in the Pacific, then left the Navy because he hated being told what to do. Sailed alone on the Columbia until he was in his late 80's, still continued to sail with my uncle and cousin until near his death. He kind of made a name for himself in the local sailing circles because he made a point to only work on sails, and would never use the motor unless there was no wind whatsoever. Always docked in the marina under sail.

Anyway, it's a good book.

Fun fact: the latest edition of the report has removed the "pancake" theory of the towers collapsing, due to the obvious in-feasibility of the concept. Which leaves us with no plausible explanation as to how they fell in free fall.

Read the NIST report, you dumbass.

https://www.nist.gov/el/faqs-nist-wtc-towers-investigation

Here's the thing: There is no practical reason for "controlled demolition". If Bush and Co really wanted war with Afghanistan, they could have just rammed the fucking planes into the towers. Seriously. That's a terrorist attack enough.

Hell, we went to war with North Vietnam over a faked UNSUCCESSFUL attack on a ship.

If you must believe that it's a conspiracy, even then logistically it just doesn't make sense on any level to detonate charges on the WTC. They collapsed because the structures weren't strong enough to have a fully fueled 767 plow into them at almost 500 miles an hour.

The only mistake bigger than getting involved in Vietnam in the first place was pussyfooting around and not fighting to win after we decided to get involved.

I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can write a thoughtful paper over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my personal collections. Not only am I extensively trained in field techniques, but I have access to the entire collection of the LA natural history museum and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. Daily reminder that we could keep doing this for a long fucking time if there weren't one billion africans, one billion indians, one billion chinamen, and billions of other subhumans polluting the earth and tearing through resources while contributing nothing in their wake. Places like Central Africa could be the breadbasket of the world, supporting a population of 1-2 billion highly intelligent and environmentally conscious Europeans. Yet for some reason /k/ is so preoccupied with the rights of people who want nothing more than to disarm them, murder them, and take everything they own. People who are barely conscious in the first place. People who wouldn't even realize they were dead.

If you want to know what a planet run by the third world will look like, just glance at australia. The aboriginals burned down entire forests just to kill a few deer. They completely destroyed the ecosystem of an entire continent independent of any great mechanized industry. They were too braindead to even devise a blanket or simple shelter; they slept naked on the ground and their bodies fell into a state of proto-hypothermia during the cold desert nights that would keep them barely clinging to life.

If length of life is your only measure of quality, then I guess our wonderful society with an exponentially increasing depression, obesity, cancer, and mental illness rate is the best we've ever had it - and I know you'd probably argue we were better off back in the 50s, which to a large degree I agree with, but it doesn't go well with your blind support for the current system which got us from there to here. Before we left the wild, (eden in the bible), we enjoyed a low rate of hunger, war, disease, and mental illness. The family unit was stronger than it ever has been, and relationships were built on critical trust. People stuck together to succeed, and conflict was mitigated by this necessity. It wasn't until the earth started to warm up after the ice age that agriculture became widespread due to arable land emerging. This is when hunger, inequality, war, disease, and human suffering began as we know it today.

Let us know how the Gulag is! I was going to order it, but I found three volumes to be very intimidating.
