So I use Howard Leight ear pro with SureFire EP4 Sonic Defender earplugs underneath. What is the next step up from this?

>earplugs with active muffs

Why do people do this?
>>
>>34426790
SureFire EP7 or 10s
>>
>tfw lost my Howard Leight's
>tfw don't want to drop $40 again
>tfw using foam plugs
>>
>>34426836
my tacitcool operator friend from /k/ told me to
>>
>>34426836
I do this at indoor ranges because the noise levels are too high for either option alone, but the active muffs let you carry a conversation.
>>
>>34426836
>>34426929
I can also hear RSO just fine with plugs in and muffs on with mic turned off
>>
>>34426929
>>34426932

You need to learn how to properly use plugs and/or muffs then.
>>
>>34426836
Because those don't seal over the ear well and I don't want to go deaf if the seal is accidentally broken especially by glasses.
>>
>>34426969
My rifle always hits the howard leights and breaks the seal.

Wish they were low-profile near the bottom.
>>
>>34426836
Because active muffs offer less protection than passive muffs.

The NRR of the muffs OP is using is only 22. This is fine for typical indoor pistol shooting and outdoor rifle shooting, but if you are going to shoot a rifle indoors or anything chambered in an unusually big caliber it might not be sufficient.

>inb4 I only use those muffs for indoor rifle/big caliber shooting and I'm fine
No, you're not. Hearing damage is cumulative. This means your ears are most likely already fucked up, just not fucked up enough to actually affect your hearing yet. Eventually you will accumulate enough damage to affect your ability to hear.

>inb4 why not just get passive muffs with higher NRR
Several reasons. They are bigger so it's a lot harder to get a proper cheek weld when shooting a rifle. They are usually overkill for pistol shooting. >>34426969 is making a good point as well.
>>
I use Leight ear plugs, then 3M Peltros as external ear pro.
>>
>>34426944
Turning on the useless mic?

> Howard Leight

Any other muff with earplugs underneath.
>>
>>34429440
What you got against Howard Leight? People who are more well off than me and who could easily afford peltors or something else still use them.
>>
>>34430277

they are uncomfortable as all fuck.
>>
>>34430301
Got a point there, but the more expensive ones most people have to buy special inserts just to make them comfortable
>>
I use Howard Leights but I've added gel earpads I got from eBay and a headband cover with foam inserts so now they sit right for me.
>>
>>34430277

They look cool and are thin but, the quality isn't there even for the price.
>>
>>34430277
>clips instead of attenuates noise
>no gel cup option
My only complaints.
>>
>>34431463
No one makes gel pads for HLs. Post a link.
>>
>picky cunts
>>
Just get some 3M Peltors
>>
>>34426790
>bought second hand howard leight impact sport in almost brand-new condition
>wore them at at work for 2-3 week by now
>realized there's some sort of occasional static noise in my right cup
>nothing is turned on
>have to remove battery to stop the sound

anyone got that shit?
>>
I find the Howard Leights acceptable, but still wholly unsatisfying in terms of build quality and function. They often don't seal well, and the one size fits all leaves a bit to be desired. Furthermore mine generate a good deal of squealing feedback noise at high playback volume and also seem to pick up a lot of RF interference. Finally the external microphones cannot be used in conjunction with a radio or similar device plugged into the 3.5mm input jack. When the jack is grounded out the circuit seems to skip the external microphones.

For $40 they work, but that particular market is just dying for another option currently.
>>
>>34426790
I use xboxhueg earmuffs, are howard leights good for use when shooting fifty?
>>
>>34426790
take a can of compressed air and hit up your eardrums for about 5 seconds a piece. you can't hear anything for about 2 hours

I bought howard leights and they're garbage.

Don't seal properly (my headphones do better job), they're uncomfortable as fuck, and they don't even stop much sound.

Pic related is what I'll try next.
Made a mistake trusting /k/ on howard leights
>>
>>34426836
In case you adjust your muffs or the stocks knocks them you lose your seal and you are exposed to the sound full blast.

Also doubling up is highly recommended for indoor ranges and shooting magnums.
>>
>>34427057
>The NRR of the muffs OP is using is only 22.
> only 22
This model has the same certification as my army issued one, is more comfortable and give you the possibility to maintain a normal conversation in a range. How is that bad?
>>
>>34426836
To double up. It's objectively better than either option alone. Vital if you shoot indoors. Using electronic earpro lets you hear even through the plugs.
>>
>>34426865
>don't want to drop $40
how do you go shooting?
>>
>>34435633
OI YOU CUNT, I CANT HEAR A FUCKING THING. I THINK ME EARDRUMS ARE PERMANENTLY DAMAGED
>>
>>34436050
By car, what's your point?
>>
>>34436384
how do you pay for ammo when you don't wanna spend $40 on earpro?
>>
>>34436421
I don't actually pay for ammo. It's offered by my range since I'm a RO
>>
>>34432864
They were here:

>>34436444
Though even if I would pay, .60 $ per ammo isn't a great deal

I never said it is bad. I said NRR of 22 might not be adequate for indoor rifle shooting or unusualy loud guns.

22 is not a whole lot for muffs, surefire EP4 plugs have 24 . That's the price you pay for them being active and relatively small. You can easily get 30+ from big passive muffs.

And don't think wearing 22 muffs + 24 surefire earplugs will be 46 NRR, not how decibels work. I would say it will be around 30 but that's just from my experience, no idea how to actually calculate it.
