>>
what's the differences between an a1 and an a2 rear sight? i've used an a2 but not an a1. everyone i talk to about building a carry handle ar always says to build an a1 over an a2.
>>
>>34429837
Major difference is that A2 rear sights are adjustable for elevation and have a big knob on the right hand side for windage adjustment. A1 sights are simply adjustable for windage.
>>
>>34429837
For the A1 rear sight, you push down a plunger and rotate the windage drum left or right to adjust for windage. Not as easy as the A2's knob but will be very hard to mess up your rear sight's zero.
>>
>>34429837
Marine Corps wanted an adjustable rear sight because they're still stuck thinking that Camp Perry is relevant. Army wasn't happy about it, but Congress told them to shut the fuck up and adopt a new version of the rifle together, even though the Army didn't like most of the features (sight, burst, retardo barrel profile).

Basically, the Marines are idiots.
>>
>>34429837
The reason /k/ shits on the A2 is cause back in '86 the Army published a report that criticized some of it's features, even though in the end they didn't change anything on the A2.
>>
>>34429919
the a2 is objectively inferior to the a1 unless you're a target shooter.
>>
>>34429856

The thing that people like about A1 sights is the windage can only be changed by poking on a detent with a tool or bullet.

The A1s two rear apertures also have a different relationship than on the A2. Irrc the unmarked aperture was used for 0-300 meters and the one marked "L" was intended be used beyond that.

I have an A1 lower. I'm just lazy and haven't built it yet.
>>
>>34430251
If I remember my history right the Palmetto Armory lowers were built by the predecessor of Olympic Arms back in the late 1970's. They're a perfectly functional lower and one of if not the first commercial aftermarket AR-15 lowers. I briefly had a billet Palmetto Armory lower that I promptly sold to someone in a ban state because it was a pre-ban and therefore made of goddamn diamonds. It had fairly rough machining but it was an A1 pattern lower and worked fine.

They're definitely interesting looking. They were made between 1979 and 1982. It was angular compared to the standard AR-15 receiver, but that's to be expected since they were one of the few (if not the only) company making AR-15 lowers outside of Colt.

I have a beat to fuck a1 lower (it was legitimatly in a fire) I want to built into something with 80s flavor but I can not stomach paying a premium to build out this fucked to death lower. Fun fact, previous owner took a grinder to it thinking he could file off the selector stops to make it full auto. second fun fact, when it was in a fire the fire investigator found it, saw the ground down lugs, and concluded it was a machine gun so this lower actually was seized, then return by the ATF.

So it's super fucked up but has a fun history. At any rate, I would love to just fund some used up fucked to death kit from a 70s or 80s AR but they seem hard to find.

Meh. I'm at work right now but it's really nothing interesting. Just an old receiver with shitty finish and a few spots with grind marks. Being in a fire didn't really hurt it. Sitting in water did. All the steel pins and springs completely rusted away and has to be drilled out so their so some rust staining.

That's nifty as hell.
>>
>>34430714
op here. I have two. one was purchased locally the other was ordered from Brownells directly.
the latter one is a "blem". the sales rep said there was a misspelled word on the right side of the receiver. who ever machined these receivers (not NDS) put the safe, fire markings on the right side. a true A1 is not marked on the right at all.
I paid $125.00 shipped for it so I'm not worried.
>>
>>34433465
AR15sport.com for the trigger guard.
there is a seller on gunbroker selling correct selectors.
>>
>>34437785
Yea.

Because Colt was pretty much the only game in town making AR-15s in the late 1970s/Early 1980s and the design was still patented, Palmetto Armory had to reverse engineer lower receivers, so they're not exactly in spec to the original design. Hence why they're angular.

I figured.

Would you happen to have a link to the stock? All I've found for a milspec stock are these.

Barrel length depends on a balance of how much you care about it being historically accurate, being able to get a bullet up to speed, and how loud you are willing to tolerate.

>>34446421
Do you worry more about historical accuracy or actually shooting it?

Right now my bid is at 300, should I be outbid I suppose I'll likely order an M21 or maybe that trijicon red dot with a gooseneck mount.

... is this a famas-charging retrofag AR15?
>>
>>34447097
Some of the first AR designs used this charging handle, AFAIK it was the first wit the AR-10. I'm a little drunk right now though, so I could be wrong.

Get some of this in Gray-Black flat, get a cheapo airbrush from harbor freight and put it on your black parts it REALLY helps. Also what bag is that and where can I get one? Also also where'd you get the bayonet and how much did it cost?

Mine was around $650 but I got some really good deals on some stuff.
