Alright we've had Cold War PACT and NATO threads before, however I can't recall the last time /k/ has had a thread dedicated to Asian armies during the Cold War. Hence this thread will be dedicated to Asian militaries from the mid-late 70's to the end of the Cold War. I'm going to not involve the Vietnam War in this because we could have multiple threads on that. Any contributions are appreciated since I do not have much on this topic.
Starting with some JSDF Type 61s

How many times has china upgraded the Type 59? It's getting a little redundant by this point.

ROK M48 tanks
>>34425482
Just pulling out what I have when I can find it, most will not be in order. As I said earlier I don't have a whole lot from this period.

Vietnamese troops pulling out of Cambodia in 1989 on an old Gavin. Wonder how many still work over there.
Why is everything Asian "type xx"?
>>34425577
I wanna punch you for using the word "gavin"
>>34425612
Guess its easier that way.
>>34425577
Members of the ROK Headquarters Intelligence Detachment. This unit was formed to conduct covert operations inside the DPRK during the Cold War. Bit of a controversial unit because most of the guys in it had no idea what the unit was about and once you were in, you couldn't leave. Training was done on a small island off the coast of South Korea and once there trainees would undergo a brutal regimen of strenuous PT, language courses (the Norks speak a different dialect), and survival skills. Many trainees committed suicide, and if by some miracle you survived to the end of your service your part in the unit was not acknowledged. If I recall there's a lot of veterans of this unit who were rather pissed about that.

Slipped off the tongue, won't happen again.
>>34425650
Alright taking a slight break because I happened upon a treasure trove of ROK-US exercise images, will download them and post them. Also need to make lunch.
Alright lets get the ball rolling again. ROK stuff.
>>34425720
>Slipped off the tongue, won't happen again.
Its all good, brah
Have to go, will be back later. Have found some JSDF stuff for then, if anyone has cold war PLA or anything really then feel free to chip in.

>>34426729
Thanks for the pic contributions. I used to have a Sino-Vietnamese War folder but I think I lost it when my last hard drive shit itself.
>>34426475
I know it was last-generation by the time it was fielded, but I really like the Type 74. It's a nice looking tank.
Sorry for the delays in-between posts, I'm trying to get some more JSDF stuff before I start posting that.
From what little info I can find on Cold War Jap doctrine, they expected the Soviets to invade from the North, reaching Hokkaido, their Northernmost island, first.
So, they placed and shaped their defenses, tactics, and forces entirely on the Northern region, and their basic plan was to throw everything they had there to stave off the Soviets until the U.S. could relieve them.
>>34427396
Got any sources for JSDF pics? I'm having some difficulty with anything that isn't tanks. Also were there actual Soviet assault plans to take northern Japan?
>>34427380
>>34427410
I have quite a few JSDF pics, mostly infantry, some trucks, tanks, helicopters, and planes mixed in there too.
Sadly no good sources, it's mostly just what I've been able to find from random google image searches, and going off links I find based off the images.
As for the invasion of Japan, I have no clue. I imagine they had plans for the invasion of everywhere, but I don't know what strategic advantage the Soviets would get from invading Japan. Perhaps to use it as a staging area for a U.S. Pacific invasion?
Have nothing to add, but very cool thread.
>>34427471
Thanks for the contributions.
>but I don't know what strategic advantage the Soviets would get from invading Japan.
Can't really see a reason either. I feel the USSR would have a lot more to worry about.
>>34427465
Fun fact: their first camouflage pattern, Type 1 "Fang" as seen here, was designed specifically for Hokkaido, and was woefully conspicuous everywhere south of it, which was the rest of Japan.
Goes to show how serious they were about their predictions and protection of the Northern region.
>>34427561
What makes Hokkaido's topography different than the rest of Japan?
>>34427603
>>34427582
>that trigger discipline

>>34427613
While most of Japan enjoys humid, occasionally tropic weather, Hokkaido is volcanic, mountainous, and icy.
Its vegetation is not as vivid as it must survive the frigid fall/winter seasons, its forests mostly deciduous, and the Northernmost portion of it is a taiga.
>>34426216
looks like 'parade float' camouflage.
>>34427674
Gotcha
>>34427645
They also, and still to this day, used flamethrowers.
Not sure if ROKA still do, I know the Chinese still do.

Some of these are from a blog of a JSDF veteran, he is the bespectacled fellow in some of these photos, especially the ones that feature Mt. Fuji.
You can try reverse searching them and you might find it, he has quite a few photos on his blog.

I'll be sure to look at that blog. In the meantime, dinner break.

And that's about all my decent JSDF cold war photos.
This is 90's but it's the oldest Thai army photo I have.
Don't know anything about their equipment/weapons/doctrine, or if they were even a consideration by anyone during the Cold War.
Thanks for the thread OP; it's been a good time.
Soviet Mongolian army
Also don't know a whole lot about them. If anything went down between China and Russia, Mongolia was their buffer.
I don't know if Mongolia would side with either one or be neutral.
>>34427934
i wonder if the americans raped all of them
>>34427996
Mongolia was definitely in the Soviet sphere.
>>34427515
Could see them doing it to tie down US naval forces, preventing them from transfering to the Atlantic and whatnot
>>34427953
Thanks a bunch m8
>>34427973
The Thai military did some stuff for the US during the Vietnam War, then fought protracted border skirmishes against Cambodian/Vietnamese forces during the 80's when Vietnam was occupying Cambodia. Apparently they didn't do too bad.
>>34427873
>>34428022
Did Mongolia ever want to leave the USSR?
From what I've heard Mongolia was one of the few countries that sorta benefited from being in it, at least when it was initially formed.

Nope, sorry, just a few I randomly got a hold of from /k/ or google.

From the 50's-60's North Korea was growing faster than the South, and in the 70's they were about equal as the South caught up.
>>34428402
I'm aware, but still its interesting to see the DPRK pre-90's.

If the USSR invaded Japan they would probably so the US can't use it as a staging area, remember that Japan is very close to China and Korea
>>34428706

>>34429344
Good point, I didn't think about it the other way.
>>34425650
Worse than that. I knew a guy who was associated with that detachment in the 50's and it was routine to kill their operatives once they returned.

Funny thing about Singpore is, although they've claimed as "multi-cultural" nation, ALMOST ALL the specialized position within Singapore Armed Forces (e.g pilots, special forces, officer) were filled with SINGAPORE CHINESE while other races (Singporean Indian, Sikh, Malays, Eurasian) have to shed their blood and soiled filling in low ranks position. Guess PAP-led racist policy were still enforced even after the death of Lee "Emperor God" Kuan Yew.
