Currently into 19th century blackpowder large caliber cartridge guns (imperial military and sporting) and the evolution of the nitro .577 big game cartridges. Its a very interesting subject. sniders, Martinis, chassepot, gras, needle guns sporting variants, trapdoors, early mausers etc ranged volley etc
are rolling blocks fun? I see a couple in 7mm mauser and was wondering how easy it is to acquire ammo and how fun.
>>34421879
I'm actually close enough that I could get to your area then...
Not sure if going into California is worth it though.
Does the store usually have decent prices?
>>34419459
>>34419466
I own several. The are a very reasonable price an I think will appreciate, I also collect the 1866 'yagatans'. Yours is in lovely condition. Clean and put renaissance wax on it. Do you have a gras? I have some versions that were modified to be issued for use with mausers and adapted for other riles used in european national volunteer movements.
>>34421886
7mm Mauser is still common. Not terribly expensive either.
>>34421884
What do you recommend for someone who wants to buy a single one of those old military "fuckyou" guns? I'll buy more eventually, but I want to try one
>>34421886
There is apparently a problem with the headspacing of new-production 7x57mm cartridges in these old Remington 7x57mm rifles; in the time between when the rifles were made and when SAAMI standardized on the cartridge dimensions there was a change in the case dimensions of most commercial 7x57mm cartridges. Therefore most commercial ammunition is not safe to fire in a 7mm Rolling Block, and they are a hand-loader's proposition only.
>>34421925
>What do you recommend for someone who wants to buy a single one of those old military "fuckyou" guns? I'll buy more eventually, but I want to try one
For investment or shooting?
>>34421912
Pretty good prices. Great staff in a small shop with a mix of blackpowder, milsurps, and tacticool shit. Cheapest transfer fees around. One of the employees was telling me about it about a week ago when I was fingerfucking milsurp.
Said that they will cycle parts of the estate into the store since they can't fit all the guns. But if you ask for a specific gun they will check the catalog and find it or something like it. Problem is that they are still a few weeks out from doing that
>>34421925
>y "fuckyou" guns
They are that. Both in terms of cal and as hand to hand weapons they are something else. It is no wonder that African colonization was so rapid in the 19th with these beasts issued to imperial forces. Volleyfire at 1000 yards from these is devastating, like a belt fed 50. A hit from these and no one is getting up again.
>>34421945
Shooting. I like to see how old stuff works and go through the process of making it work. I imagine there are some that are more accessible, in terms of obtaining and operating, than others.
I have no experience with black powder
>>34421945
For shooting - you will have to get into reloading BP cartridges, bore slugging, casting, annealing, fire forming brass, possible beredan primers etc. Great to learn and hobby. For investment....well the fine Lodon sporting guns with artisan work. After that as old as possible and in the best possible condition. Many were still in use at the beginning of the 20th century and even ww1.
>>34421934
well fuck me sideways. would PPU work since they try to maintain older dimensions?
I haven't quite gotten into reloading yet.
>>34421984
>Shooting. I like to see how old stuff works and go through the process of making it work. I imagine there are some that are more accessible, in terms of obtaining and operating, than others.
>I have no experience with black powder
Well there are some hazards so maybe as a first a martini, largely because the action is so strong it will help you stay safe. The gras and mauser 71s are nice to. The older ones have more of the hand to hand weapon it them a three band snider with a 1853 bayonet is a formidable weapon unloaded. I found the 1871 mauser a very tiny weapon in comparison, brass will be expensive but can be used almost indefinitely if treated correctly
>>34421984
You may ind that the likes of the chassepot is almost overwhlming in the learning curve with the obduration washer, firing pin and cartridge construction. same with a Dreyse. So that would bring you into martini, snider, mauser 71, gras, Vetterli etc. Have a loo at the comparison table here at the bottom of the gras article
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fusil_Gras_mle_1874
some have bigger support communities than others, most french and british guns have shooting communities supprting them though you would probably hit a wall with language on some of them. Some have very few if any shooting them and you would need considerable skill to form cartridges and loads. I ind them surprisingly accurate if loaded correctly and shot doped scientifically (ballistic calc, inclinometer, kestrel, inclinometer, spirit level)

A lot of these were originally the long rifles, rebored and cut down to carbine length. This was made as a carbine, which I think is really neat.
>>34421915
The 1866s are for the Chassepot, though they can fit on a Gras.
Nope, I do not have a Gras rifle yet. I will be looking for one now that I have a bayonet and the dies to make the ammo coming in soon. lol
I don't think Gras or Chassepot bayonets are going up in price soon. They made a lot of them. I keep seeing the same Chassepot bayonets at gun shows for $150 and no one even picks them up.

>>34424270
The bayonet I think, it's a spike instead of a blade.
I'm probably still wrong, now I doubt myself again.
Damn it.
>>34424285
While commercial ones generally will have a spike, there are plenty of military ones with spikes since they switched in the late 60s IIRC.
>>34424344
Well shit.
Are there any other indicators that it could be a commercial version?
>>34424369
It's hard, just look for early vs late production
the earlier ones will generally have darker stocks, milled triggerguards and threaded barrels. But it's not definitive. Generally if the gun was imported before the 1980's it's military.
Bros what is a rough value for an original, complete Krag? An actual long rifle and not a Carbine. There's an estate auction near me next month and they have one. It's been poorly advertised and there's one crappy pic of it so I'm hoping I could snag it cheap.
>>34424618

The receiver pittings.
There is a similar amount on the other side, it doesn't seem to be causing any problems.

Looks pretty typical to me. You paid a fair price.
>>34426619
Here's the crest.
I'm not sure if I'm using that term correctly, oh well.
>>34426635
That puts me at ease.
>>34426652
And here's a case of some cuts on the stock.
I don't find any like them anywhere else, most of the damage is dents and gouges.
>>34426652
Bore looks fine too. Not new obviously but definitely shootable. Hope you like shooting it.
>>34426679
>>34426683
I did enjoy shooting it, I think it shoot very nicely.
I forgot to mention that it didn't come with a cleaning rod, so I ordered one.
The bolt looks funny, but I think it's normal, lot of stuff in it when I first disassembled it.

got my PING! on back on friday. thinking about going out again monday - maybe bring a bunch of enfields.
I've only ever bought milsurp after they've been owned by someone else (so never owned a fresh import) and as such I've never encountered or cleaned off cosmoline. This 1907 pattern Lee enfield sword bayonet sheath looks like it's in bad shape, and I can't identify what that dark green looking coating is on the metal. Is that cosmoline? Should I take it off?
>>34426887
>I ordered my 8mm lebel dies
Smart move. Now sell me one of your Berthiers.
Heading to indianapolis from chicago. anyone know any good gun stores on the way?
>>34427210

whatd you do with the bear?
Did I miss something, guys? Did some redneck youtuber make a video about Finnish guns, or something?
Is there some other reason why, all of the sudden, M39s seem to have started showing up in cancerous Archangel stocks on the intenret, whereas before, I don't recall seeing nearly as many Finn guns that were bubbaed.
>>34427285
Sweaty Ben sold a bunch with cracked stocks recently
>>34427303
Ah, that explains it, I must have missed that entire affair, I haven't been as plugged into the milsurp market as I should have been lately.
>>34418968
It doesn't look to be in irreparable condition, but you have to ask yourself, "is a fairly cheap rifle worth the investment to me to restore?"
Not everything has to be a 100% rational decision...
>>34427118
you can have the bubba'd one if you promise to find her a new stock and barrel bands.
>>34426887
>now that I own 3 berthiers
Pics
>>34412380
Here is my oldest.
>>34427112
That's paint. Cosmoline is a thick grease, it's shades of brown depending on how clean and new it is, it's a little sticky, and has a not-unpleasant petroleum smell. It makes metal feel slightly moist and tacky; it looks like there is none on that sheath.
You'll probably take a lot of fire from /msg/ if you wire-wheel the paint and rust off, but it's up to you of course.
Found this bayonet today at a swap meet. Can anyone ID what nation these markings come from? They look almost hebrew, but from what I've seen Israeli bayonets have the metal ring added on. I know it was originally produced by Mauser Obendorf in 1915 based on the other markings.
From what I can tell it's a K98 bayonet.
>>34427917
Also should I clean it further? It smells strongly of cosmoline and the wood handles feel a bit sticky.
>>34427917
Egyptian. I recognize those moon runes from anywhere.
8269
>>34427917
Arabic numerals. It's probably a German SG.98/05 that was cut down by Turkey. They did that to a lot of the longer German bayonets they got in WW1; that way all the blades could fit in the same scabbard type. Happened to one of my German "Ersatz" bayonets.
>pic related
>>34427957
Should I try to get some of the cosmoline out?
>>34427993
Sure. Just be gentle with that wood. I made myself a spanner screwdriver for taking apart nuts like those. You just take an old one and grind a notch in the middle.
>my other ersatz German WW1 bayonet; this one is probably a war souvenir; it still has the original sheath, frog, and knot.
>>34428010
How do you gently remove the cosmoline? I assume with a hairdryer and a cloth? I don't think anything involving solvents would be a good idea at this point.
>>34428028
Hot water and a tooth brush works, though is tedious.
>>34428028
my sink gets to like 150degrees took it all right now nbd
>>34428043
Basically this. When I cleaned my nugged, I had a whole pot of near-boiling water. The stuff just about washes away on its own when it's warm.
This a bayonet thread now?
im awful hard up for a k31 right now. Could buy a k11 carbine right now for $550. whats the real differences here?
>>34428260
>whats the real differences here?
K31 has stronger action, longer barrel, thicker barrel, longer sight radius, closer minimum sight setting.
>>34428305

>>34428305

>>34428385
I think it's a Mannlicher M1895
>>34428680

>>34428028
Sounds weird, but unleaded gasoline takes cosmoline right off of metal. It worked with my M48. Just let it soak for about a minute or so depending on the amount of cosmoline.
>>34428028
Kerosene works so does mineral spirits or heat in general. I use a heat gun for wood and mineral spirits for metal
>>34428713
It doesn't sound weird, everybody knows gasoline is a petroleum solvent.
>>34428993
Thats true, but if you do use gas, just make sure you let it air out, otherwise your gun will smell like gas.
>>34427672
I was going to take some new pictures today but it was too hot.
>>34424419
If it has a threaded barrel instead of the later pinned barrel it will probably be fine.

I wish; bubba had his way with this stock a long time ago and absolutely drenched it in this reddish varnish.
>>34430647
If bolt still matches, then yes. Receiver blued or in-the-white?
>>34431304
To be fair, the K11 is probably still more accurate than most shooters.
>>34431243 Well! I guss that's one way to "cock" your gun.

what is a Yugo 24/47 that still has the old Serbian crest worth?
>>34434177
Probably 300-400.
>>34434177
Well for one thing, it's not an M24/47 if it wasn't scrubbed and re-marked by the Commies.
If it had its original stock and bolt, or even just any M24 stock and bolt it'd be a $400+ gun.
As is, it's worth like $250-300.

>>34434765
Hey I did one of those. Made it a cheap project when the rifle was $180 and the stock was $25. The one handguard needs some BLO on it, but I wasn't waiting for a Krag handguard to come in the mail so I could do both of them.
>>34434982
This one sat in a guy's closet for like 20 years. The metal and bore are in great shape.
>>34434997
too bad the replacement stock is fucked
>>34435009
Yeah it was cheap drill purpose sets from Springfield Sporters. I don't really care. I wanted a blonde rifle so I made one.
>>34434765
Where did you get the sling? My 1917 is in need of one.
>>34434997
1 of 2 M95s I got for cheap. They were dirty, full of cosmoline, and missing bolts and a couple small parts. Bores are in amazing shape. This one has a chip missing from the buttstock, but oh well.
>>34435053
2/2. Sold this one to a buddy for some cash and a Jap flag. The bolts on these can be a fucking cunt to install.
>>34434982
Fucking autocorrect. I am* waiting for a Krag handguard.

>>34435082
I keep vacillating on if I want to restore my Krag now or later. It would actually be cheaper to buy a different one I think, even without the possibility of selling mine.
>>34420582
There's a reason for that. Seriously, and it's not the FFL trying to be a dick.
>used to work for an FFL
>circa 2009-2010
>individuals mailing in firearms for transfers (our customers buying on GB or Armslist mostly)
>sending guns in boxes with nothing attached to it.
>we have to log anything that comes into the store and stays overnight.
>imagine how hard it is to log shit when you know nothing about what's going on
If individuals would use some common sense, more dealers would allow it. Basically:
>package the gun properly
>include an invoice
>invoice should have your contact info and the buyer's contact info, especially a fucking telephone number and a name
>include a copy of your DL since you don't have an FFL copy to enclose
etc. simple shit, but you'd be surprised how many guns we got in the mail that was nothing but gun inside a box. and then half the time our fucking buyers/customers wouldn't even tell us that they had something coming in, so we literally had no fucking idea what these guns were for.
ATF don't like shit like that, so we don't like shit like that. If they come in to do a check, which they probably won't but if they did, that shit has to be accounted for. Telling Mr. Dog Killer "uh, we got this in the mail and know nothing about it" ain't going to go over well.
What's the best Mosin and why is it the M44?

What is the highest a person should pay for a Type 38 rifle all matching including dust cover, mum intact, but bore is rusty (though still visible rifling) and wood is dinged to hell.
Just shoot me some ballpark figures.

I don't, but you may have some knowledge that I don't have on it.
My rifle seems to be sweating.
By that I mean that when I took it out to shoot in the sun, oil started coming out of the stock.
Should I be worried?
