Opinions on this rifle and caliber?

I found the perfect rifle for the perfect price, a Swedish Mauser m94 for $320. Comes with 80 rounds. It's in a college town an hour away and I'm assuming some kid who needs a quick buck is selling his dad's old rifle. Is it a good deal?

I have no idea what it is worth but it seems like a good deal. It's one downside is that it takes 6.5x55mm Swede. Do you guys know how much this round costs compared to .308, 7.62x54r etc? Is there a website or anything where I can find all this info?

Pic of rifle, if you live near pls don't snake it from me because I've been eyeing it for almost a week now

I think it's actually pretty popular as a hunting/marksman caliber; something about really flat trajectory or some such like that, although this is vague recollections I might or might not have heard so I'll need someone more educated than I to confirm or deny. As for prices just do some google research, look up the biggest online ammo retailers and see what the average price is and just compare that to what you see for other popular calibers.

>>34410487
Christ, mannlicher stocks are so sexy.
>>
>>34410505
The aesthetics blow everything I've seen so far away and it's extremely affordable. I tried using midwayUSA but it's really confusing since the cost per round for all three mentioned calibers ranges from like under a dollar to two dollars, and I don't know what to go by.
>>
>>34410479
Its about the same in price, its not something you are going find in walmart.

as a surplus gun it has an edge over 308 on cost and range, as well as less recoil. but it really stands out on a modern bolt action with a fat 24" barrel.

they're very good with the heavy 120 140gr VLD bullets for 1000-1760 yard shooting supersonic. at a mile you want lathe turned bullets with BCs up over .8 in that cal.

as a plinking cartridge it costs the same as anything else with cast lead, if you aren't reloading a medium caliber you shoot you really should be, ammo cost goes down to 17-25 cents and you save approx $50-80 an hour on a $200 turret press.
>>
>>34410564
I won't be plinking with it, I doubt I'll even shoot it that much considering I own a bolt and lever .308. For the price though I don't want to pass it up.
>>
>>34410676
"because I want to" is a perfectly good reason anon. If you can swing the money and you legitimately want it whether it be as a shooter or a collector's item, then go for it. If you think you'll be disappointed by the caliber, you really won't relative to other calibers, and especially more obscure milsurp.
>>
>>34410676

It's perfectly affordable and in-production ammunition that's just a tad harder to find than anything mainstream.

If finding ammo is gonna be your main issue, don't worry, get it.

And if you care about performance, it's a perfectly adequate round, situated nicely between 6.5 Carcano and .308.
>>
>>34410557
>Wood projectiles to be treated as corrosive

Meme dream supeme

TLDR, buy that rifle.

I bought a 1916 Carl Gustav a few months ago, and it is one hell of a rifle. 6.5 swede has been a very popular round in Europe for over 100 years, and in the last few years it has also become very popular in the US, with most large companies loading it. The ammo will cost somewhere between the price of .308 and .30-06 for most brands, but if they stock PPU it will be cheaper. It is also an excellent candidate for reloading, as die sets and components are cheap and easy to find for it (Lee happens to make an 'RGB' set for this caliber, which is around $20 for the 2 dies).
If there isnt already one on the right side of the stock, try to find a range plate for the M94 using the more modern M41 rounds (these are sold on liberty tree collectors i believe), as they decided not to swap out the rear sights on these rifles in favor of just giving you a range plate for reference. (If you are interested, a good substitute load for the M41 military ammo would be a 142/143gr bullet with ~46.3gr of Alliant RL22).

Blanks maybe this would help actually shoot something...

>>
>>34410758
I should add that this round has been known to kill moose at some impressive ranges. The long bullet carries energy very nicely over long distances.
>>
>>34410479
If you handload 6.5x55 in a modern rifle it is a god tier caliber. Anything from absolutely devastating 85 gr varmint loads at 3200 fps up to 160 gr elephant dropping solids.

Thanks for the advice guys, I'm feeling pretty confident. Here's to hoping he hasn't already sold it to someone else.

If he's offering $280 to you, he's one of three things:

Completely ignorant to the actual value.
Completely uncaring to the actual value.
It's stolen.

Friendly reminder that Lyman's 49th edition manual has 6.5x55 loads using a M38 action whereas Lee's uses loads for modern guns. Don't blow yourself up.

>>
>>34412157
Literally the difference is in the markings, get it you dumb nigger, and post pics when you do.
>>
>>34414358
Markings and it looks like the stock has been sporterized the same way the one in Ian's video has been.
>>
>>34410479
6.5x55 is basically a .308 with flatter trajectory, less recoil and lower weight bullet. Keep in mind that the M/94 is a carbine length rifle though.

In terms of military rifles, swedish mausers are widely regarded as some of the best you can get. The mechanical precision and the worksmanship equally so. However, do note that they are not built for modern, hot rounds which does limit you.
>>
>>34411356
Doesn't really matter unless you're some sort of collector, in which case, a random m94 isnt really that much to treasure. Ive owned several bubbad swedish mausers, they're cheap and make for great hunting rifles.
>>
BUY BUY BUY!

6.5x55 is the perfect balance of bullet size and ballistics for a hunting round, the m96 is tack driver accurate in stock configuration but long, but the smaller m94 seems like a perfect sized rifle for doing anything. Also, the m94 is kind of hard to find and usually fairly expensive when you do.
>>
>>34416110
I was speaking to the idea that the seller doesn't know what he has. He absolutely does. That's all I was saying. If you want a 6.5 Swede gun just to have that's perfect.
>>
Bubba changes the math a bit but still a decent deal depending on what was done to it. You can replace the wood parts and put on new sights easily and restore it. I'd pass if the barrel had been chopped or if it had been drilled/tapped for scope.
>>
>>34416084
>do note that they are not built for modern, hot rounds

Im going to underline this. Do not shoot hotter rounds than original m41 ammunition, unless you have a gunsmith inspect it and give you the goahead (though i still wouldnt push it). Even though it's ridiculous quality, a lot has happened in gunpowder the last 100 years.

It's a fucking 1917 that some faggot made look like a G33/50. The markings say 1917, not Interarms, so it's definitely worth more than one of those shitty things, but it's probably worth less than a full SM because it's been bubba'd.

I emailed forgotten weapons to see if they can help me judge what it's worth. I was late and felt bad and ended up giving the guy $320. He was driving his wife's car and said he was working towards a career as a preacher so I figured he could use the extra money

There's no restoring that one. What caliber is it actually chambered in? If it shoots well you might have a good hunting gun.
>>
>>34416390

On the plus side, from what I can see in the picture, the sporterization wasn't done badly. A step above Bubba and his dremel. Probably overpaid but if you hunt deer with it for the next forty years then who cares in the end.
>>
>>34416390
I was considering buying an upper handguard, stock disk, rear sight etc and just nigger rigging it then I realized it looks better to me in sporterized form. 6.5x55mm Swede.
>>34416411
Good hunting rifle. I already have a bolt and lever .308 but you can never have too many guns, right? Plus the mannlicher style stock is just overall pleasant to look at.

The swedish made mausers (to be clear, my experience is pretty much only with m/96 models) have a very tight bore, down do 6.45 which means that pressure will be higher than in modern 6.5 rifles. If you're also using harder than usual bullets like solid copper bullets and ones with a middle wall, you're asking for trouble. We're talking maybe twice the pressure than if you've shot the same round out of a modern rifle. Adding to this, the metallurgy has come miles in 100 years, specifically the hardening is usually not very deep. Then there's also the fact that you have no idea how it's been treated with by its previous owner.

Milsurp rifles are fun, and your example might be a very fine one indeed; i would however strongly recommend that you a) avoid very hot rounds, b) ones with hard rounds and c) get the rifle checked by a gunsmith who knows his shit. Specifically the barrel (DOES THE BOLT NUMBERS MATCH THE REST OF THE RIFLE?), bore dimension and if there's any signs of cracking anywhere.

Most likely, your rifle is fine (they're widely regarded as great for a reason) but personally, i'd be cautious. I realise im being a buzzkill but who knows, maybe im saving one of your eyes.
