Time to end the meme, /k/. Is steel case ammo really that harmful? What guns is it bad to to run through? What parts does it Fuck up? And is shooting brass over steel worth the price? Discuss.
>>
Steel case denies you the delicious satisfaction of reloading.
>>
Steel isn't bad, its cheap but it can have feeding issues. I usually only run steel through my SKS and AK's, might get steel .308 once I get a ptr. Primers are what most people worry about due to corrosion but MOST modern ammo is non-corrosive
>>
>>34407702
Nothing wrong with steel ammo for high volume non precision shooting.

There's nothing inherently damaging about steel ammo, it all comes down to the gun its fed in. My friends Chinese ar exclusively eats steel, while another's won't reliably feed it.

There's no firing pin damage since the primers are still brass.

Worst that happens is fouling from laquer or copper wash or zink plate or whatever else.

I think that covers all bases.
>>
>>34407706
he fell for the "u cant reload steel" meme
>>
>>34407702
>steel case ammo really that harmful?
nope
>what guns is it bad to to run through?
basically none of the relevant modern ones
>What parts does it Fuck up?
it's more abrasive than bras but still softer than the major components on a gun. in theory it's slightly more wearing on the extractor but I haven't noticed on any of my guns.
>And is shooting brass over steel worth the price?
yes if you've got a suppressor and don't trust Russian QC. I run steel on every gun except when I'm shooting through a can. in that case I run my handloads. if cans were over the counter I wouldn't give a shit as ive yet to see a keyholed .223 from wolf/brown bear.
>>
>>34409172
will the bullet tumble that fast?
is there really enoough time and torque to flip the bullet before it leaves the can?
>>
Just put a drop of lube in the chamber in any little breaks to keep it from sticking. various reasons as to why it can stick.

>chamber too hot so it melts the plastic shit on the round

>doesn't expand as far as brass so carbon can build up and keep it stuck

>expands TOO much because it's soft and gets stuck

whatever you feel. just keep it all lubed and cleaned

Yeah it's called a baffle strike. Shit bullets/crimp can do it. I run a .308 can so the odds of it actually happening on my SR-15 is pretty much nill.
>>
>>34407702
>Discuss.

The majority of /k/ will never shoot enough steel case let alone anything to warrant an issue along with parts breakages.

There was a thread where someone had 16,000 rounds through their FNS and everyone was clamoring that 16k is such a high round count when it is not.
>>
>>34409910
16k is a shitton of ammo through a single pistol actually. That's about 80 range visits or 16 pistol only classes.
>>
Why do some of Wolf Ammo 7.62x39 have holes on the tip?

Pic very very much related. Tula-era Wolf WPA.

7+ MOA 10-shot groups at 100 yards, keyholed by 150.

1. Steel is harder than brass, and is less malleable, therefor it's difficult to resize and rarely resizes to spec. But it can be done.
2. 99.9999%+ of all steel cased ammo is berdan primed. This requires a specialty decapping assembly and the purchase of berdan primers to re-prime the case, which are enough more expensive than boxer primers to negate any cost savings of reloading brass. But it can be done.
3. You cannot reliably anneal steel cases, and coupled with their lower elasticity, they're effectively 1-and-done reloads. You're pushing your luck trying to get a second reload out of them, and risking a case head separation. But it can be done.

So the tl;dr is:
>yes it can be done
>no it's not cheaper
>no it's not worth the hassle
>>
>>34410137
No, it's not.

That's like, 1 season of club level bullseye competition. Not even a full year. It's also like 12 USPSA/IPSC matches, which if you're willing to travel can be shot in a single month.

Oh, also, this was supposed to be their 55gr FMJ.
>>
>>34411167
How so
>>
>>34407702
It's not the actual steel case that's the problem, the problem is the bi-metal jackets that some big name manufacturers like Tula use for their bullets. Long term that will wear down your rifling faster than a copper jacket, but you're still looking at all of 10,000 rounds before you start seeing a noticeable difference.
>>
>>34411209
The only steel CASED ammo I know of that doesn't also use a bimetal bullet is Hornady Steel Match.

Also, as illustrated in >>34411118
Tulammo and Tula-era Wolf ammo have a long and consistent track record of using horrendously undersized bullets, which increases fouling and obviously leads to piss poor accuracy.

Quite a bit cheaper than new production brass and about 5cpr cheaper than reman brass.

>>
>>34411309
Oh, wasn't trying to correct your grammar, merely pointing out that for all intents and purposes steel cased=steel bullets too.

Sorry I did a shit job of that.
>>
>>34411266
I just paid around 256 for 1000 rounds of 7.62x39 golden tiger shipped.
Included ammo can.
>>
>>34410953
hollowpoint duh
>>
>>34407702

For a rifle for which it's easy enough to change the barrel and you shoot lots of ammo through it run & gun style? Go for it. The lower cost of ammo will pay you back the barrel which will wear quicker.

For a rifle where you need professional assistance changing the barrel? Not fucking worth it.
>>
I only shoot steel case, never had a failure or malfunction in my AR's or pistols, or anything.

great quality ammo, its dirty but who gives a shit.
>>
>>34409738
>chamber too hot so it melts the plastic shit on the round

the polymer or lacquer will not melt, another gem of a myth from the AR crowd with shitty rifles that won't run it.

you can put a blowtorch to lacquered cases and it won't melt.
>>
>>34411266

X39 20 cents a round shipped.

.223 20 cents a round shipped

9mm .13 cents a round
>>
>>34413761

The misconception comes from the fact that steel cases do not expand like brass does. This leaves more gunk in the chamber as the case mouth does not conform to the throat.

If you run brass case ammo after steel case, you're likely to get stoppages due to carbon built up sticking to the expanding brass cases and preventing proper extraction.

Since steel doesn't expand much, they don't have that issue and extraction is easier.

Doesn't actually have anything to do with the lacquer obviously.
>>
>>34407702
I mostly use steel cased 308 TULAMMO
when I can't into glorious EU partizan (serbia), MEN(germany) or GGG ( lithuanian) or S&b (CZ) brass ammo...

FR8 (spanish 7,62x51 mauser) : ok, grouping is sub par but meh

K98 IDF (308 rebarelled K98 from ISRAEL : sometimes sticky bolt when extracting, blasted primers sometimes

Tikka T3 : ok but shit par accuracy

308 danish GARAND : lel no, won't cycle or go into battery 1on3 times

friend G3 : not a single malf

Friend baikal 308 single shot : yes but the extractor is having a hard time

FN fal : no issues
>>
>>34413761

of course. doesn't stop people claiming it so just lube your chamber
>>
>>34411285
Thought so
>>
>>34411209
That's highly dependent on firing schedule.
>>
>>34411190
So you're saying I get more bullet for my money.
