Same anon you replied to, I believe you, I've done the same with cheap slower 115 grain 9mm depending on where you hit them. My theory is that, even though it's lighter, because 22 is significantly thinner and roughly the same speed it penetrates much better. I've had ricochetes off hitting the top of a shell broadside shooting at a 20 degree angle once and several times when shooting at them from the backside with the marks to prove it. Some of my backside shots broke one of their tails off and deflected off the shell. I switched to the 124 grain Winchester NATO rounds in one dedicated magazine and haven't had the issue since. Ive never had a 22 fail but ive always had broadside shots with it and already had an idea of the angles.

I've killed 7 armadillos with 9mm, 5 with the 115 grain, 2 with 124 grain, and only 3 with 22 so not a massive sample in case it sounded that way. I should clarify that it doesn't seem to be a guaranteed deflection on the backside, just that it happens more often for me than any other side.

Also, when I checked the bodies after they were already dead by shooting them, I couldn't recreate it while they were laying on the ground unless there were no entry marks or damage anywhere on that side but I never checked from different angles and I was always closer.

I've killed probably close to 400 armadillos over the last 15 years with pistols. Everything from .22 short to .44mag, at ranges varying from "it bled on my shoes" to "how the fuck did I hit that, I could barely see it". I've killed probably an additional 150 in the same time with a 10/22, mostly at longer ranges (45+ yards).

I've not once had a ricochet. And I've had some particularly marginal hits.
