In my country, a decade ago it vas a fairly common thing used by field wardens and farmers against fruit thieves. It has the potential to deter someone, it's cheap, and this shit is VEEERY painful. apart from the cloud of small projectiles penetrating your skin, having salt under your skin is pretty bad. (try to pour a pinch of salt to an open wound, you will understand it.)
The only difficulty, that can arise, is the salt collecting moisure from the air, and leading the barrel to rust. If you run the cleaning stick through it after shooting, and you don't leave the salt in the barrel, you will be fine.

It was kind of an urban/rural legend even when it was more common.

A lot of farmers where I grew up talked about it, but few if any did it. It was a common theme that was brought up if ever you talked about sneaking in and grabbing some of the farmer's corn. Basically everyone around my area "knew" that if you were going to try to steal some of Farmer Jones's watermelons, you'd catch an ass full of rock salt and that shit would burn terribly... not that anyone ever knew of anyone who had been hit. Likewise, Farmer Jones could load some 12 gauge rock salt loads thinking that he would do some nonlethal punishment, and at least get the satisfaction of blasting a couple of crop-stealing teenagers...but at anything more than point blank range, he might as well have emptied the shells and fired the primer for the scare factor.

Now, there were farmers that would shoot at you with birdshot for raiding the peanut fields. They knew, and we did too, that at the long distances they were shooting from the farmhouse to the field no birdshot would likely reach its target, and if it did, it would be just a light but scary peppering.

truthaboutguns.com did a test with rock salt a few years back. Turns out if you're wearing jeans and a t-shirt at about 20 yards, the only thing you'd have to worry about is the wadding, which could still cause some damage.

I got shot with rock salt 35 years ago when I was ten. I was cutting thru a grumpy old mans field on the way back to my grandparents house and blam from about 40 feet away in the back.
I had to sit in a bathtub of hot water to melt the salt under the skin. It hurt like hell I would Not recommend it.

My great-grandfather was a prison guard in the late 40's and early 50's after the War. He didn't want to kill folks anymore so he made some DIY non-lethal shells for his duty shotgun.

You could take a couple of teabags and tape/band them together or you could get a small bag and put a small amount of rice in the bag, but it had to a cloth or rubber bag (like a condom) that was somewhat durable.
