the biggest actual weapon

drawing an AT4 is literally like drawing a grenade, there is no "rocket class" in the military. mortarmen carry a mortar around with the intent to set up a mortar and fire a mortar, 11Bs run around with machine guns and M4s with the intent to engage with machine guns. if someone says they might have a tank or a couple APCs, you may or may not have AT weapons with you

Because the overwhelming majority of military leadership is:

1. Non-combat arms
2. Non-infantry
3. Non-light/airborne/SOF

...which means they have their head straight up their fucking ass when it comes to the average assaulter.

CAG and the Ranger Regiment leads the way when it comes to kit for infantry, and yet the fucking conventional force completely ignores the lessons learned they provide. In the 90's when armored plates became available, both CAG and Regiment began a streamlining process to reduce the weight of the armor worn by the average assaulter, and they chose to only wear the armor when it didn't hinder mobility, ie, during MOUT ops and raids when delivered by air assets. When the conventional force started to get funds for armor, not only did they buy shitty armor that hadn't been used by CAG / Regiment, but they decided that it was a uniform item, instead of a piece of protective equipment, and expected their troops to wear that shit at all times, even when humping a ruck....which was fucking STUPID.

The bottom line is that the competent U.S. military fighting leadership is overwhelmed, and outranked, by the fucking MORONS, which is why bitches and faggots are now expected to fill the ranks of front line combat units.

FUCK the military! Only a fucking moron would enlist today.

Most of the time when light infantry locates a tank it's going to be before they get into contact with it. Light infantry is all about engaging on their own terms, so holding their balls and waiting is 99% of the infantry experience anyway.

How can you be this dense? The whole point of "light infantry" in both antiquity and modernity is to engage the enemy with minimal logistical support as part of an avant-garde, distinct from the main force. Both a Greeknigger in a pelt with some slings and javelins and some Amerilards hauling mortars and Javelins fulfill the same conceptual role.

Actually greekniggers were almost solely all heavy infantry, it's why their tiny ass absolutely fucking wrekt the Persians in basically every fight. The Persians were a frontline of light infantry with wicker shields and a metric fuckton of bows behind them, which work great against the stepp barbarians to the east and other Persians, but did diddly to the heavy greek Phalanx.

It's why they could not defeat the Greeks when they absolutely should have, and then got wrekt when Alexander the greats dad united the greek states and Alexander pushed into Persia.

>>
Why don't Europeans know their own history.

The Light Infantry *has always been loaded with luggage.* In the early 1700s, light infantry units already carried their packs all the time. They had to: unlike line infantry who traveled with the main army, light infantry elements ranged ahead,. Which means they have to live off the land. Which means they carried their stuff with them in case they need to camp down for the night far away from the main army.

Hell, the experience of light elements moving fast on campaign caused late 18th century European military thinkers to give backpacks to ALL infantry units. Hence by the Napoleonic wars, damn near every soldier had a light infantry style pack.
>>
>>34401642
Because amerimemes aren't light.

So what's the purpose of light infantry? Shit firepower and shit mobility doesn't sound like a winning combination
>>
>>34404435

>>
>>34404453
so that we have people trained as dedicated infantrymen to use infantry tactics in areas to rough for vehicles.

Areas I assume they wont need anti armor capabilities

By the late 19th century the concept of fighting in formation was on the wane due to advancements in weaponry and the distinctions between light and heavy infantry began to disappear. Essentially, all infantry became light infantry in operational practice. Some regiments retained the name and customs, but there was in effect little difference between them and other infantry regiments."

The purpose of light infantry is to sound cool

>>34404453
>So what's the purpose of light infantry?

To operate in areas that vehicles can't reach. Mountains, jungles, swamp, forests, buildings, are all areas that vehicles can't effectively reach outside of roads or trails.

>Shit firepower

Depends on the unit, but they can carry enough shit to kill tanks and IFV's alike. See: Javelin missile

>shit mobility

On the contrary, they are THE most mobile force on the battle field. There is no place light infantry can't reach. None. They just can't reach it as fast on foot. One of the best things about light infantry is that they are so versatile. They can infiltrate on foot, or you can load them up in trucks or helicopters and deliver them en masse from point A to point B. Hell, you can even toss those fuckers out of airplanes. Light infantry are the best units any army will have as they're fitter, and actually spend more time training fire and maneuver then they do doing vehicle maintenance.

I guess I should have been more specific for all the retards in the thread, like you.

You can, of course, get to most places in a copter....if you have a copter, and the weather to fly it is right. However, there are indeed millions of square miles of terrain that wheeled and tracked vehicles can't reach without a road, but the infantry can on foot.

>Infantry can't do shit other than get ambushed

You do realize that every IED attack in A-stan and Iraq that resulted in the catastrophic destruction of U.S. vehicles, including tanks and IFV's, were initiated by enemy infantry, right?

This is not true
What MAY be true is that existing US military vehicles can't get to those places
Because they are top heavy as fuck, too heavy, designed around armor rather than mobility

Infantry flying in their own paramotors could reach anywhere in the world much faster than walking by foot.

Light infantry desperately need those unpowered exoskeletons that use only springs to work. Even if they're clunky and have to be taken off before battle, so as long as it bears the weight of their marching load it will be worth every penny. Many millions saved on the VA because their legs should be OK.

This isn't stuff for 1 day of fighting or a short little patrol, they carry so much equipment so they can keep going for several days, dozens of miles without resupply. Btw, this is why poor countries without much equipment for their soldiers end up with such long lasting wars: they can't go more than a day or two without return to a base, they have no night vision, etc. They could run across a street faster than the western soldier, but they would not have the supplies to hold out over a multi-day siege.

They aren't for calculating firing data, they're for giving the gunners a fixed aiming point when firing indirectly.

You can use computers to calculate firing data, but they can fail for any number of reasons. Plus they are heavy and require heavy batteries. OP pic is from the 80's so I doubt that was an option then.

Failing in your primary objective and abandoning the country is a failure. The point of the insurgency is to get the Emmy to leave by any means necessary, though it tends to be just dragging it out so long the other nations people pussy out and want to leave.

Example is how America tried to stop the spread of Communisim in Virtnam and failed, also how were trying to stop the Taliban in Afghanistan and also failing.

No.
Since light infantry operates in difficult terrain they cannot rely on regular logistical support, which means bringing food, water, ammo, batteries, etc. with them in their packs. In harsh terrain like mountains they have to carry all their cold weather equipment too. Airborne and amphib infantry are the same and fight like light infantry once they are inserted.
>>
>>34401642

>Depends on the unit, but they can carry enough shit to kill tanks and IFV's alike. See: Javelin missile

That's not *for* killing tanks, not at the operational scale. It's for slowing them down enough so that by the time the infantry is dead, real tank killers can arrive (e.g. adjacent friendly armor, or brigade Apache QRF, or letting TOW teams set up an ambush a few terrain features back), instead of the enemy armor blitzing through unchecked.

>actually spend more time training fire and maneuver then they do doing vehicle maintenance.

The cold truth is that a 240 PT score in a humvee will be in better condition on the obj than a 300PT score who rucked there.

It's light relative to the fact that they don't have Bradleys or Strykersor any other several ton Can o' Infantry. Almost all infantry eventually dismount and operate effectively the same with the exception that vehicles might provide overwatch. Keyword being "might" as all Infantry aspire to be light infantry, and using those vehicles is gay.

>>34401674
They're attached organically to the unit. Mortarmen are the biggest shams I've ever met, and I am so mad I got passed over at the last minute to be shipped as a C.

>Be me, 11B1O fresh at new unit
>See mortarmen attached to HQ in formation
>They break off to do their own PT at the gym while we freeze our asses off in the snow
>After that, they disappear to do "mortarshit"
>Reappear at 1659 rubbing the sleep from their eyes.

They motivated me to get credentials which would be put me in a position that was too important for duties. I spent my last enlistment as a vehicle commander, armorer, and CBRN guy. The last two at the same time. 11Cs are an inspiration to lazy corporals everywhere.
