Questions that don't deserve their own thread.

My question: what the fuck am I doing wrong with my rifles?

I started shooting rifles fairly recently and have been trying to zero a standard 16" barrel AR-15 with iron sights and a 10/22 with tech sights at 50-yards. I balance the bullseye on the tip of the front sight for every shot, and I end up with a 4"-6" group. This is with both rifles with a variety of ammo. The groups are all over the target, too. This is shooting off sandbags with absolutely no sight movement. I have those rifles locked down on the sandbags and I'm still getting extremely erratic groups. I'm super careful with my sights and trigger pull so I have no idea why my groups are this shitty.
>>
>>34397728
how tight is the rifle to your shoulder?
>>
>>34397771
Fucking vise-like.

Not that it matters. I tried shooting with the rifle in a deathgrip and just resting it against my shoulder and my groups were just as shitty.
>>
>>34397728
Exhale while you pull the trigger. Bipods and lead sleds can help you over come this.

I need help understanding something about blowback guns. So the cartridge case is forced out of the chamber, and there's a big bolt to keep it there long enough to reduce pressures. But if you didn't have a bolt, and the cartridge case explodes, is there a problem with this besides shrapnel? I'm wondering if, for a DIY scrap metal type shotgun, you could make it "auto ejecting" in this way and just have a shrapnel shield around the chamber.
>>
>>34397728
Focus your vision on the front sight, and shoot during your natural respiratory pause after exhaling.
>>
>>34398256
A blow back has an ejector and extractor. Homemade slamfires (your pic) rarely do. Also bolts and blow backs? Pic a pistol and I'll show you ten which dont have a bolt.
>>
>>34398323
Blow backs do not require an ejector or extractor but most of them do.

numerous straight blowback pocket guns have no extractor, it is not a requirement in a straight blowback gun, although if you need to extract a live round you need to use a squib rod.

>barrel AR-15 with iron sights

Check you sights are not moving. ......averae ARs do about 2-5 MOA at 100M with average ammo so you should be in the 2MOA range minimum at 50. Post some targets, ammo (make, grains, weight, casing please). We don't know whether your groups have vertical or horizontal spread or both. Are you aiming full sight, fine sight are you aiming at 6 O clock or centre etc. Are you shooting on the flat or an incline. Breathe relax aim squeeze shoot

I dont have this issue in my jetfire. Simply releasing the barrel usually flings the round out or you can just turn it upside down and dump it out if it doesnt fly out. The only time a round or casing gets "stuck" is when the gun is gunked up after shooting at least 50-100 rounds and even then you can get it out with your fingernail.

What is the "gun show loophole"? Or rather, what do libs think it is? I hear politicians bring it up and I see /k/ laugh at it, but what is it?
>>
>>34398913

The much raved about "gun show loophole" are legal face to face sales involving firearms between two legal citizens who reside in the same state.

It is against federal laws to do a face to face sale across state lines without an FFL present. It is also against federal laws to sell a firearm to a criminal or "prohibited persons."

The thing is, these "face to face sales without FFLs" at gun shows are in the small minority and are often blown way the fuck out of proportion. Having been to several gun shows in my state, 9/10 of the tables selling firearms are FFLs looking to ply their trade.

It's just an overblown title that they use. Same as calling people they don't like bullies or other various titles.

>>
Alright how do l tell if a barrel is rusted and what are some techniques to clean a barrel. Im sortve new to guns and so far l can shoot better than l can clean.
>>
>>34399422
If you're only shooting lead don't bother cleaning it at all. Velocities are too low to have leading in the barrel and read doel not damage the barrel. Copper fouling from jacketed rounds, on the other hand, can damage your barrel over time. Clean that shit out if you're not going to shoot your rifle for a while, otherwise clean it when you notice accuracy is starting to get shit.
>>
>>34397728

Get somebody that knows how to shoot to watch and coach you.

You're probably making some fundamental errors you're not aware of that are throwing off your rounds. If you're doing everything the way you're supposed to, you should be shooting around 1 inch shot groups at 50M, if not better.

Easiest is a 22cal bore snake and solvent.
Better and still easy is a cleaning rod(brass > aluminium), 22cal brush (brass > nylon), solvent and cleaning patches.

Just get a hoppes, outers, or any other brand cleaning kit. Pretty much all of them will have what you need and stuff for other calibers.

Only other thing would be gun oil/lube if you aren't using an all in one cleaner/oil/lube.
Apply after cleaning.
>>
>>34399743
my procedure:
strip
take dry brush down bore
dry patch down bore
patch with solvent down bore
let sit while you work on other things
wipe/brush down all others parts with clp
dry
dry brush down bore
dry patch down bore a couple times
if last patch clean, done
if not repeat solvent process until patch comes out fairly clean ( you dont need to be able to eat off it)
patch with clp
dry patch
lube and reassemble

I got a weird one

I'm about to go to a glorious 1,000 acre country property and plan to do lots of shooting while there. I want to take pics and video of me shooting, and was thinking of rigging my phone up to my rifles to get some cool first person videos, but then wondered if an iphone's microphone can be damaged by being so close to gunshots? Like less than 2 feet from a gun being fired?

I'd assume not but what the fuck do I know about cell phone microphones, seems like a valid concern

Work on your fundamentals of marksmanship.

Stance, grip, sight picture, slack, smooth press. If you're shooting from a bench you pretty much have taken the first two out of the equation. Idk, it shouldn't be hard. Are you doing that thing noobs do where they let the sights move around slightly then shoot right when it's on target? Because you'll miss every time doing that.

Soldiers paid for their own uniforms, most often it was taken out of their wages. Officers and cavalry could afford to buy their uniforms outright.

They were bright and colorful because being able to identify units at a glance was critical to tactical decision-making. Black powder rifles fired in a volley would produce a ton of smoke and obscure the battlefield.

I would only use the best red dots for a 12GA shotgun. Something like an Aimpoint Micro or the new shotgun specific micro would be good choices.

If you cannot afford an Aimpoint, I say stick with ghost rings or bead sights. There really shouldn't be a noticeable increase in speed jumping to a red dot with a shotgun.

>>34401451
It's because people here are still in the stage of making expensive noise. They do not dryfire, they do not own a shot timer or do any sort of structured range work. They do not seek professional instruction because they're 'men' and only faggots need someone else how to teach them to shoot a gun. Like driving and lifting weights, you can't tell a 'man' that they're doing it wrong. They're 'men'

It fucking shows, sight tracking? Never heard of that. Sight upgrades? Waste of money. Competition? Fuck that, it'll get you killed in the streets. One handed shooting? Are you fucking crazy?

Sights are not moving.

This is my best group at 50-yards from my last range trip. This was using IMI 55-gr ammo but I've shot American Eagle, PMC, and Wolf (all 55-gr) with similar results.

I'm aiming so that the bullseye is on top of my front sight, with the front sight covering just the smallest part of it at the bottom.

Shooting on a flat surface.

After this group I shot some more and they were all over the place. Some trended left and some right, some high and some low. Most of them didn't have any shots land on the bullseye either.

People can (and have) written entire books on this subject.

If you're worried about it being a legit M1 from a specific era, you're just shit out of luck because you shoulda been reading up on it months ago. Identifying real from fake on stampings, serialization, and parts is tricky work for the uninitiated.

If you can, find a known-good example of an Garand and sniff the stock. Old US GI stocks have a very specific scent from the rapeseed oil they finished them with.

As far as making sure it's functional. If you're buying it to shoot it, just make sure it's got decent rifling, the metal is in solid shape (minimal pitting/rust), and nothing is loose when it shouldn't be.

Have you tried a ransom rest and remote trigger pull? Because vertical stringing like that is almost always the shooters fault. You're applying forward pressure as you're pressing the trigger, subconsciously anticipating recoil and the noise. The shove at different times and different pressures is causing your barrel to wander. Have a friend do some ball and dummy drills with you and you will see your barrel dip.
>>
>>34397728
For one, you should use only circular targets. Square targets can give you false signals when sighting in if you don't hang them plumb.

Maybe your guns just need a good cleaning? Hoppe's and stuff like that won't remove copper fouling. Try Tipton's Truly Remarkable Bore Solvent.

You don't know a fucking thing about gigging for frogs, do you? Hell, you don't know a damn thing about frogs in general. Next time, try just wading into the crick. Frogs aren't usually afraid of people. Granddad and I used to fill 4 five gallon buckets with frogs, bring em home and dump them in a kiddy pool. We'd get some that would try to hop away and we'd have to club them. Shit was hilarious. Frogs are dumb, slow, and easy as fuck to catch.

pick up a bottle of Hoppe's number 9 and a cleaning kit. Go through your barrel dry with a brass brush on a cleaning rod to loosen gunk off the bore, and then run through with a soft brush on the rod soaked with number 9. Do this however many times until you run a blank swab through and you just get a light grey. Oil your moving parts with gun oil (with some restrictions) - consult your owner's manual.

God bless

Depends on the scope. The dials will tell you which way is which. They indicate which way to rotate to shift the point of impact in that direction. For example rotating it in the direction it says "r" will take it out more to the right. Additionally be sure to do the math on the number of clicks. Only a few are needed most of the time don't just wing it one way and the other

Asking once more since i never seem to fetch any replies...

The gun shop up the road from where I work is selling a pretty rough Inland M1 carbine for $800. the wood is chewed up. Dings up and down the stock and a good little chunk missing from where the charging handle has hit the wood in the front. The parkerization/blueing is pretty worn off the bolt and barrel. I would say the gun overall is fair to good condition and (from what I can see) the bore looks good still. i can kinda see a shine through all that fouling and build up. The gun feels very well used but still solid.

From my short observations, the owner seems like a pretty cool guy who understands that he has to move his guns at the end of the day. What would be a good price for this?

Excuse me US Army bros,

Why do soldiers not wear service stars on their campaign medals? I was in the Air Force and everyone, including me, wore all our the devices on our ribbons. You'll see a soldier who deployed numerous times with no service stars. Also, is it true that special operations soldiers don't wear them for opsec reasons?

I and everybody I knew wore all our ribbon devices, I've never heard of them not being worn as a policy.

As for SF, it doesn't make sense not to wear awards. If they did something so super sneaky it needed to be OPSEC'd, they wouldn't get an award for it. Besides just because you have a ribbon doesn't mean you have to explain how you earned it to some rando. About the closet thing I can think of is SF guys wearing sterile uniforms in the field, but that's a whole different thing.

Okay, so I'm in the process of building a Palmetto State AR-10. I have a 20" barrel from Anderson, and I was given a 15" free float hand guard with a barrel nut. Here's my problem, when I tighten the nut to spec, the barrel has about 1/16" of play in it, front to back. Would it be acceptable to use shims to bridge the gap? Or is there another way that I'm just overlooking?

How much force does it actually take to force a combat knife through a person's skull?

It happens in nearly every zombie flick I've seen; a knife or other object pushes right through the skull of a zombie as if it was made of play-dough. Surely this isn't the case in real life?
>>
>>34413634
Depends on where it impacts. Temple, eyes, very top of the head, and above the spine are fairly soft. Be pretty easy to skewer a knife in or to come down on top of the head trench knife style. Poking a skull in the forehead is going to be a rough time, however.

Try a loop along maybe.

Also there is a list of things you shouldn't do while shooting. It has a diagram with it that looks at shot placement and gives you the correlated problem.

It sounds like you might be anticipating the shot. This is where you get anxious and jerk around a little bit as you pull the trigger. At the exact second you pull trigger check if your moving a bit.

Whatever gives you a good sight picture.
The closer you are to the rear aperture the bigger view you have of your target. The further you are away the less obscured your peripheral vision is.

Also in reference to your picture you want way more space between the rear and front sight. A longer sight radius increases practical accuracy.

if you want to use some of the propellant gas to reduce recoil you'd be better off having ports drilled into the barrel a few inches down. I would probably offer 600. And see where it goes.

Im basing my offer from seeing good shape non numbers matching garands go for 8-900 and good original matching ones go for 1200+

Was a while ago when i last checked prices.

It's some sort of folding club/baton used to beat people up.
If it helps, the character using it is Russian.

what type of armor is being referred to when wikipedia articles say 9mm doesn't penetrate armor? would .45 penetrate said armor? what do i do if someone with armor is robbing my hosue?
>>
>>34426502
Ballistic armor. 9mm can't even penetrate modern soft armor "bulletproof vests".
>would .45 penetrate said armor?
Not even close, it would actually do worse at penetrating but impart more energy through the armor. Not enough to incapacitate.
And before you ask, no, .357 magnum and 10mm can't either. Regular .44 magnum MIGHT penetrate but more realistically will break their ribs and then they won't want to play anymore. Hot .44 magnum will tear it apart, and repaint your drywall shortly before sending it everywhere.
>what do i do if someone with armor is robbing my hosue?
With soft armor aka "bulletproof vests", any rifle 5.56 or above will make it about as effective as a thick jacket. Hard armor plates, hope you have a .300 win mag laying around. Or just shoot them in the face. If they have full riot gear or something that shields their face you should reassess just who is in whose house at this point.

Depends. Rifle or pistol? High precision, high volume, or both? How much money do you have to spend? Easy/cheap way to process a modest amount of brass is the bargain rotary tumbler and corn cob media from Midway and spray-on case lube. Just make sure you get a timer for it so you don't wear out your media every time you forget to turn it off.

what's a good home self defense pistol? i rarely ever go shooting and don't own any guns but realized a couple of days ago i have no plan when if someone breaks in. the gun would stay in its case in my closet or something until i needed it so i want something reliable that i don't have to clean out every month if it hasn't been shot. also i don't want to use a shotgun because it's large, cumbersome and i don't want to tear my house apart if i get in a shootout. but i'm not strongly opposed to it if yall think it's better for home defense than a pistol.

so if yall could give me some brand names that'd be nice. price isn't too big of a deal, i prefer quality and my life over money. thanks.

Would firing 4.5 mm pellets out of a 5 mm pellet gun be detrimental to the health of the gun?
>>

You would have terrible accuracy if it even loads properly.
Lead, copper or plastic pellets would most likely not damage the barrel.

These are the three contemporary soft armor levels. IIIa is by far the most common, as few people in armor (cops, security) cheap out. Darius Negrophallus might, ifnhe has armor for whatever reason.
Nothing 20ga will penetrate except flechettes and other weird stuff like that. Won't be anything close to a clean kill though, and they'll probably be pretty upset you shot them and may spend the last 15-45 minutes of their life sodomizing your corpse with the barrel of your sissy shotgun while they bleed to death.
If you meant hard armor plates, again, fuck no.

Has anyone ever told you something like "the AR15 is the best home defense tool"? Because 5.56 is pretty good at this shit.

So I live in a country where some firearms are available. Handguns yes but must be used on range, and the only semi-auto rifles are .22 or below, everything else bolt/lever/straight pull.

I started going to a club and I have been bitten by the fun bug. Three questions really:

1. I've been mostly shooting .38 out of a .357. The rental gun I use is a "classic" looking S&W, a bit like a model 686.

Are all revolvers of this style expensive? It seems if I want one that doesn't have a big rubbery grip on it I am paying a premium. Are there similar looking ones by other manufacturers that fit the bill? I always choose the S&W because it is so smooth and it has custom grips that really fit my hand. I get reasonable groupings with it.

Leads me on to...

2. I have only been shooting ten times. My accuracy with a revolver is way, way better than with a semiauto. Is it just a case of extra practice as there is more affecting my aim? A club member said the .22 semiautos are not great because they are less looked after. Also the sights are not set up just for me.

3. I got to try someone's .44 lever action and I loved it. First shot was outside of bullseye area but the other 4 pretty darn center.

I see many brands of lever actions. Are the ones by Puma, Rossi, Chiappa etc as good as Marlins and Winchesters? I don't mind paying a premium if they will be "better"

Thanks for any insights. Car wallpaper as payment.
>>
>>34434754

Shit, not "mostly" but instead recently. Mostly was a .22 revolver.

Pick up used smith & wesson revolver in 38 special, k frame or larger. Stainless steel would be better for neglecting but blued would work. The non 357 magnum models are much cheaper. Look for a model 10, 15, 64 or 66.

Are armored home invades a thing now?

Your best bets for handgun rounds are 7.62x25 tokarev or 327 federal magnum. They have very similar ballistics. Both are very fast 30 caliber rounds. Won't for sure penetrate IIIA but have the best chance.

Ruger makes some nice revolvers in 327 or you can pick up an old tt33 style pistol for about $300 these days.
>>
>>34434754
1. Revolvers are generally more expensive than auto loaders. However, they are usually high quality with more attention paid to details.

This can be because they're more considered to be a collectors or enthusiasts item than a functional tool. Factory wood grips tips the scale in that direction. You're paying a premium for wood on handguns anywhere.

Grips are really easy to change.

2. Revolvers usually have very clean, crisp single action triggers while auto loaders usually have worse triggers. One of the reasons why people fawn over the 1911 is that they have good triggers compared to other auto loaders.

^This probably has a lot to do with what you're seeing. Pay attention to the trigger. As you get better it has less of an impact but is still there.

A lot of auto loaders also have barrels that move which can decrease total accuracy (but you probably aren't at that point where it matters).

.22s are regarded as cheap (and they are cheaper to make) so people don't care about them as much. But that doesn't directly say anything about the quality of a particular gun.

3. Marlin and Winchester are more well known but I'm not intimate with lever actions.
>>
>>34435103
Really, the odds of a home invasion are insanely low. The odds they'll have body armor are almost nonexistant.
If it happens, a shot to the body probably won't "stun" them, especially 20 gauge. Stopping power is a meme, equal and opposite reactions means that if your shot could knock him on his ass it would knock you on your ass. The traditional area to shoot armored targets is the groin. Lots of blood pumps through there to the legs and genitals and it typically disables a threat quickly.

I found out, it's a Nagyka, a Cossack whip.
It's from Fargo S03E05
It's poorly portrayed in the show because sound effects are added to make it sound like a character is getting pounded/mashed into with some sort of baton/hard object, but from what I can understand a Nagyka would be very painful but would just be very painful.

>>
>>34435525
You think someone's going to break into your home while they know you're there because they disagree with your political views? That's /k/ wankery. They may break into your house while you're away and steal/break shit and they may physically assault you but they're not going to do both at once. You can't do anything about the first with a gun and your best bet for the second is a handgun as, again, you likely won't be encountering armor.

You could fairly reasonably remove part of the reason you think someone might bother you by keeping your political views to yourself when undesirables are around too, but that's not the point here, I suppose.
>>
>single barrel shotguns: 130-170
>double barrel shotguns: 400+

why the fuck are they so expensive?, even side by sides. I could buy two single barrels and duct tape them together cheaper than I could buy a double barrel side by side
>>
>>34436084
It's a luxury item. Getting two barrels to properly align and lock up is a lot more expensive and labor intensive than just the one. If you're buying a double barrel then you're probably either a fudd and therefore bad with money or a competition shooter and thus are prepared to spend thousands to win.
>>
>>34435192

Thanks bud. I definitely think its the trigger pull that does it. The revolvers are much crisper.

I seem to have a curse with semiautos. As I said I have only shot .22s, two old rugers and what I believe was a Colt Huntsman Target. That one was nice but they had to take it away as it was either failing to feed or light striking.

I'm working on my technique though. Caught myself leaning in anticipation of recoil and sometimes jerking the trigger but I'm fighting those habits! Wish I had started sooner as it is fun as fuck and the people there are great with brilliant banter. Someone had a jibe at another calling .40 "short and weak" which made me laugh.

Let me tell you something about double barrels

A cheap one will break (had it happen to my Stoeger coach)

A good one will break the bank

Double barrels are comically useless except as talking pieces. I know some people insist that you can fire half a second faster than a pump action, but you only have 2 rounds while my pump has 5 rounds. 2 rounds of 00 buck will work, but 5 rounds of 00 buck could take down Arnold in his prime

I've been told to only clean in the direction of the way my bullet goes so I've been using a heavy brass brush first then using wet patches of hoppe's 9 through it then following up with dry patches until it comes out mostly clean and not dark with shit.

The easiest way to clean up gunpowder, in any regard, is to burn it. It's not going to get that hot and it won't make a gas explosion in an open cavity like that. I would just go over it with a BBQ lighter in a well vented area and clean it again. The relevant parts are aluminum, so it'll probably be fine.

Some of their stuff is very over prized and some of it is very cheap and high quality.

Their axes are pretty good, i use their norse axe for chopping wood. Want to get their riflemans tomahawk next and do a Mel Gibsons the patriot repro.

Pocket knives are extremely strong but a little expensive. But holy hell are they strong.

Their fixed knives are okay quality but too over prized for what they are.
