About 60 of the 80 they originally ordered are operational. That's actually up from a low of about 20 at the end of the Iran-Iraq War. The Iranians have since gotten much better at manufacturing their own spare parts and have been able to refurbish more airframes and out them back in service.

I think the Iranians are just spouting propaganda. In their airshows they never really show F-14s fly and whenever they show of their airforce it's just a bunch of recolored F-4s on display. They did show 2 flying back in 2015 escorting a Russian jet. But 2 is much lower than the what the Iranian's claim that they have operational (~80).

There was a story about Iranian F14's and a Canadian lighthouse.

The airframes are divided into modules that could be disassembled. If there are parts that showed fatigue (either visually or through NDT), technicians would remove the parts before proceeding on any of this processes

All of which is well within iranian engineering expertise. Even some of the avionics and other electronics were replaced by either off the shelf equipment or chinese equivalent. They did the same with F-4D and nothing says they couldn't do that in F-14

Maintaining the airframe isn't the real problem actually. It's the engine. The original TF30 suck hard. J79, for all its weaknesses (being a turbojet vs turbofan for TF30) is much easier to maintain and more reliable. TF30 is so bad that they were replaced with newer GE engine in later models

There have been rumors for ages that the Iranians are working on re-engining their F-14s with AL-31s. If they manage to do it, it would be quite a feat of engineering, and would make those Tomcats last a good while longer.

Ok Im a bit of a tomcat buff, just a quick rundown on what Ive learned over the years about the persian cats.

-Last I checked, which was probably 5 years ago, the public western sources think they have 10 to 25 or so of them flight worthy. They supposedly have been outfitted with russian A-A missiles, such as heaters, radar guided, and perhaps that crazy SAM adaptation that it was seen carrying.

Rumor has it that the russians have been helping them with pretty much everything from the avionics ( replacing, fixing) to the engines. Supposedly , they have been ( had been?) working on adapting russian made engines to work in the airframe, no one knows but them for sure. Same for the radar apparently.

So, at best case you have a hybrid f-14 / flanker monkey model, at worst its basically a less operational A model tomcat with russian heaters and SARH missiles.
Either way, a hornet or rhino will kill them dead before they know what hit them, as much as it pains me to admit.

I find it amazing that Iran has not been able to do full rebuilds of F-14s, and they are the crown jewels of their military.

(Note, full rebuild =/= build new ones. Just that they are able to build spares to keep them flying and will be able to do so for decades as long as they view it cost-effective.)
