Today the Iraqi Army claims to have taken the Al Nuri mosque and that it means the end of the ISIS caliphate in Iraq. Fighting in Mosul is however continuing, with one estimate of remaining ISIS fighters there to be around 300.

With all the conventions of the current map with the locations of fighting and an unknown degree of reliability, even loyal to Iraqi government sources reacted quite skeptical toward the main application for complete control of Mosul and the victory over LIH throughout Iraq.

Al-Nouri, according to him, is really captured, and amid its ruins today should not even speak the prime Abadi, but all the other positions of militants remain completely under their control. Task Abadi - finally declare victory and close the topic, in the expectation that further hostilities will take place is not in the category of "assault", and presented as a sweep of the liberated territory.

The first term, which was listed as the final victory, was named a further 20 of January - on the day of the inauguration of the Trump, and in fact, from the Abadi claimed victory even for the election of the US President. Obama needs to demonstrate the success of its policy in the Middle East. Since then, the term konchatelnoy and a true victory shifted more than 25 times. Perhaps only the eternal Russian "concerns" on kicking, butting, zubotychiny and backstabbing can compete with the endless "latest" victory over LIH terms put forward by Baghdad.

In general, before the end of the fighting is still far, but for the triumphant scream is hiding a more serious question - what's next? What are the results of two years of tortured Iraqi army offensive in the LIH in Iraq? Any war has a clear and simple goal achievement or failure to which can be considered a victory (or defeat, respectively).

Abadi, restoring part of the territories of Iraq captured during the offensive LIH in May-October 2014 an Islamic state, performs the tasks of the military defeat of the LIH and restoration of the territorial integrity of Iraq. Question - whether he did it - hanging in the air. TV picture is likely to conceal the real state of affairs - alas, postmodernism makes its own rules.

131KB, 960x720px
Caps in the air - it's good, but what does this victory tortured for future events?

The military defeat of the LIH has not yet been reached. Organized resistance continued, but its nature has changed. The number of fighters is estimated at 20-30 thousand people in Syria and Iraq, plus a significant portion of their relocated to Afghanistan, Libya and Yemen, where they continue to develop its human resources. Management is not destroyed. On the other hand, Iraq is the second time the army has lost the last three years. The first time - in '14 - it just broke and ran, and now it is pretty much just cut off. Estimate the losses of the Iraqi army and the military police is not easy, but even the lowest estimate of 60,000 killed and wounded, and the main losses occurred in the most trained and capable part - it certainly defeat. The victory is in this case was a Pyrrhic character.

In September, a decision will Abadi no less complicated problem - reaction to the referendum on the sovereignty of Kurdistan. Restoring control over Sunni areas, Baghdad becomes the Kurdish territory, and in addition, automatically receive a territorial dispute over the occupied lands around Kirkuk. At the same time regaining control of the Sunni areas too, is highly conditional - it is supported by an incredibly violent events that are close to the genocide that will inevitably lead to a new surge of Sunni resistance. LIH can only applaud such a policy in Baghdad, as the opponents themselves create a new resource base for the Islamic state.

Thus both the strategic objectives of the war with LIH not met and did not even clear whether they are feasible at all. It is clear that to say this out loud - political suicide, and so desperately needed Abadi picture. Taken ruins of Al-Nour are symbolic and can go for it, and so it will be replicated elsewhere. The coalition also needs to prove its viability, so skepticism about the results of the victory, apparently, will be put out for media.

Bah. If Trump actually fulfilled on his promises OR on his threats on anything whatsoever, the world would already have ended. Judging by his results so far: not to worry.

>Refsdal was in a village in the northern Syria province of Aleppo when he heard an explosion. Camera in hand, he jumped into a minibus driven by a fighter from the Nusra Front, Al-Qaeda's affiliate in Syria, to inspect the damage. A U.S.-led coalition airstrike had hit a base in the town, leaving at least 10 people dead. A civilian speaks angrily into Refsdal's camera, saying the airstrike has targeted civilian homes and killed innocent people. A Nusra fighter interrupts: "Easy now. There is both a military base and civilians here. Tell the truth", he says, before adding that the blast's intended target was a Nusra base. Refsdal understood the implicit message from the Al-Qaeda member: Film what you want, we're not going to feed you propaganda. To his surprise, Refsdal found that the group remained committed to letting a Western journalist film the fighters openly and without censorship. Refsdal spent a total of six weeks embedded with the Nusra fighters.

Miniature A-10s of course, the small drones usually seen used for recon/grenade bomb trolling have such negligable heat/radar signatures that missiles are out of the equation for most of them, so gun kills it is!
>>
>>34408389
>>34408390

I dunno guys. We are talking about targets the size of a frisbee, that move in an asymmetric pattern with - as you say - low heat/radar signature. Hitting it is one thing. The important element of these whacka-a-drones are really that they are very low cost, very high accessability, high precision and require little more skills than say a cell phone. If you waste an expensive missile to take it out, the enemy has already won the round. Evolution would dictate that the answer to a low cost threat must also be low cost.

Heh. Maybe eagles finally return to the military ranks, at least for guerilla forces.

I figure 'enlist' means into the US forces. If so, you will get three days of proper invasion, and six tours of Afghan-style 'friendly' fire and Iraq style IED. Lucky if you will ever fire at an actual enemy but you'll need full armor and never less than five buddies to go souvenir shopping. The only thing new with Syria is that you'll need a handbook to keep track of all the factions and who they are allied with this week.

Same as the ones dumped on the other attack runs/orbits, just standard procedure to shit them out all the time in case someone's trying to get a missile off at you.

Might seem like a waste, especially since there's been pretty low manpad threat in Syria to date, but since you get zero warning of someone sending a heat seeker your way it's better to be cautious just in case today's the day you happen to shooting stuff up near someone with one.

Seeing reports of Ruaf bombing now in rural IS held Hama. This is a good battle to come back into(took a month break with a few days popping in) after the SAA cleaned house up in Aleppo. Tiger forces also showed up. We about to see what kind of preparations IS made because this area has been virtually untouched for a long time.

>US Military Put on Alert; Washington 'Waiting for an Excuse' to Attack Syria, Says Russian Senator

According to Aleksey Pushkov, a Russian Senator and former head of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the State Duma, "The United States put its Navy and Air Force on alert, and is just waiting for an excuse to strike Syria."

Pushkov's warning coincides with reports of the US amassing intelligence gathering aircraft off Syria. Three of the most important spy planes in the US inventory have been gathering intelligence off the Syrian coast over the past week, according to Haaretz.

Earlier this week, the White House claimed that the Syrian government could be preparing to use chemical weapons that would likely result in "the mass murder of civilians, including innocent children."

The bizarre (and unsubstantiated) claim was made shortly after Sy Hersh reported that the US knew the Idlib "Sarin" attack was a hoax, but Trump chose to retaliate anyway.
Now we are being told (via the trusty warmongers at the New York Times), that the OPCW has concluded that "Sarin or a similar poison" was used in the April 4 attack in Idlib.

It's WMD deja vu all over again.

A rough translation: "The United States put its Navy and Air Force on alert, and is just waiting for an excuse to strike Syria. Assad will not give them one. This the perfect time for a provocation."

It sounds like the war in Syria is just getting started.

If the US doesn't escalate things in Syria they have lost. Isis and Al-Qaeda are done, it's a mop up operation now, may take a while but they're just a nuisance. If Putin manages to put the few Syrian moderates and Assad around a table for an agreement it only leaves the Kurds. Even though Assad and Erdogan aren't buddies, and Turkey fucked Syria over several times during the war, they both have an interest in finding a bilateral solution in northern Syria where the last US puppet is (Kurds). That's why the US will escalate things.
>>
Meanwhile, the Devil is dealing the joker card in Yemen. Cholera, that old killer of armies and populations. Since April 1500 have died, but WHO is reporting 246.000 suspected cases. That is 53.000 more than LAST WEEK. Cholera is a bacterial disease that spreads through drinking water. Considering that violent diarrhea are among the symptoms and that middle eastern hygienics are, to put it carefully, not quite up to western standards, I would not be surprised if this continues to spread exponentially.
>>
>>34418673
But does the US even expect to """win""" in Syria? What does a "US Victory" in Syria look like? Assad gone? You'd have to assassinate him at this point. The SDF isnt going to nor can they take over all of Syria. The only way the US could "win" is by complete invasion, and no one in America except a very tiny and honestly very stupid group of people wants an invasion of Syria

I'd say the ideal US 'win' would be an end to the Russian and Iranian influence/footholds in Syria, which yes pretty much means Assad gone and some friendly puppet installed in his place.

What nobody has any idea about is how to achieve this outcome, bar of course the megahawks you mentioned that want another balls deep invasion because in their view Russia must be cockblocked at any cost up to and including WW3. It's why the actual US policy in Syria has been so scattershot, everyone has been having ideas and throwing mud at the wall in the hope something would stick for them eventually, but really all it has been in practice is refusing to give up for year after year despite it constantly looking less and less likely that a favourable outcome is achievable.

Keeping an oar or two in stirring things up gives the hawks the illusion they haven't quit, but just makes things be a little more shitty for a little longer for the ordinary Syrians caught in the middle of it all, whilst leaving the US backed further and further into this retards corner as they resort to more and more stupid escalations of force just to remain somewhat relevant on the ground. This latest round of posturing and bullshit talk of chemical weapons is just laying the groundwork for another desperate roll of the dice in the coming weeks, although what effect another round of strikes could have on the eventual outcome still looks exceedingly minimal. It will happen most likely, wont have any major effect on the outcome, and will ultimately be nothing more than the hawks within the US having a tantrum because they aren't getting their way.

For us all we get to do is sit and wait to see which systems the US will get some live fire practice with this time.

Some of the people ISIS decapitated may have deserved it. Noone cares. Once the brouhaha ends, SAA will be remembered for being as savage as the ISIS when it came to prisoner treatment. Whether these ISIS guys deserved it or not will less important.

Personally I want the SAA and Assad to end up lawfully governing Syria again. The more of these marketing disasters happen, the less the chances of that are. They are winning and should be planning for peace, not for the gloating by people who already supports them. These pics are not going to go away.

Meanwhile, France is cozying up with Iran. The French oil company Total have just signed up a 10 billion dollar deal for developing a gas field off the Iranian coast. This is Iran's biggest deal with a western country since the sanctions were lifted.

Kinda smooth. Having the platforms filled up with French contractors is going to make them a much more awkward military target, to western forces anyway.

I think when most of us on here talk about IS being 'defeated' it's in terms of them being a land holding entity, that as an insurgency/terror organisation they'll be around for much longer is kind of taken for granted but almost disregarded. Extremist organisations are already around aplenty, and don't on the whole generate the sort of mad max/orcs warfare these threads have lived on for the last few years.

Early morning bump for survival, plus centcom reporting SDF advancing into the old city of Raqqa after 'coalition forces' (almost certainly meaning USAF) bombed 2 sections of the city walls, which were being defended by IS.

I can imagine IS whining on social media about OIR destroying historical site for tactical reasons when IS has been known for destroying historical sites of no strategic value for buttfuck retarded ideological reasons.

will raqqa be wrapped up before mosul? And where is ISIS going next? All out on deir eizzor?

Probably. Their fallback positions are likely to be down the river, but there'll certainly be some "sleeper cells" sticking around to stir shit.

is that a machete on his back or what, i not sure....

would be, at least the exact right kind of treatment for ISIS fighters

No beards, tattoos, kurd camo.... highly probably YPG.

Well spotted. Since he is wearing a russian uniform and it is Mandic posting, I assume that is a russian solder. And if so, my best guess is that the machete is a Kizlyar Alligator. Nasty piece of work but looks very useful.

Russia sold T-90S to Iraq and Vietnam, and T-90SM to Kuwait.

Iraq - 73
Vietnam - 64
Kuwait - 146

DESU my first thought was a little along the lines of 'FFS burgers, don't you start doing that shit as well' but they do at least have a valid reason, and to be romantic about it for the city walls to fall in war, even one vastly beyond what they were ever built for, is a hell of a lot more appropriate than stuff getting blown up for shits 'n giggles as IS have done.

>will raqqa be wrapped up before mosul?
Probably not unless the guys there all cut and run, Mosul is I think down to a handful of blocks left whilst Raqqa is just getting going on the old city, which has tended to be the toughest part to crack everywhere due to the density and sturdiness of the buildings.

"""peaceful""" Iran at it again, now shelling Kurds in Iraq.

>4 Wounded in Iranian Shelling on Iraqi Border Region

>Erbil- The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps heavy artillery and rockets targeted on Monday wide regions of Iraqi Kurdistan, injuring four and displacing hundreds, as well as damaging agricultural lands.

>Farzang Ahmad, the local administrator of the Haji Omaran, told Asharq Al-Awsat that the “Iranian artillery continued on targeting a village in Haji Omaran until the evening, leading to the injury of a woman, who was among the region’s residents and working in the agriculture.”

Iranian claim this is aimed at Iranian kurd opposition forces operating out of Iraqian Kurdistan. Said opposition claims they are operating from the Iranian side of the border.

It's not like we have any way of telling what the truth is.
