So I'm thinking about building a scout rifle as a summer project and can't decide what caliber to go with. I'm torn between .30-06 and .308 Win. Reasons being,

1. I already have two rifles in .30-06

2. Dad and I have a significant amount of of .30-06 in storage for me to dig into.

3. .308 is a little bit cheaper in my area

4. Should a SHTF scenario pop up I would most likely find .308 far easier than .30-06

5. I have a strong bias to .30-06 as it was the first full length rifle cartridge I've ever shot.

Plz help /k/
>>
Me too, and I have a ton of '06 cases. But .308 is a better choice, and more accurate.

If I was starting over I'd get a .243.
>>
Get a .22
>>
>>34391876
I say .308.
The scout rifle is supposed to be short and light and Jeff Cooper specifically called for .308. Also, since it's cheaper to shoot and you already have two 30-06 rifles, it will make a nice addition.
>>
I also vote .308, its an optimized variation of 30-06 in all but the heaviest bullets in 30 cal. Sounds like a fun project.

Does anyone here have experience with the 9,3x6,2 ?
>>
>>34391876

both are fine cartridges, but don't exclude .338 federal or .270 winchester.

I'd probably go with the aught-six myself, considering it has just a touch more oomph and I already have a scout rifle in .308
>>
if you're concerned about ammo availability SHTF consider putting your scout build money into a reloading setup. Unless you're planning on roaming the wasteland, keeping your 2 rifles in .30-06 fed trumps fighting with the other survivors for the dwindling supplies of .308

The extra case capacity of the .30-06 also does give you more options when reloading.

>scout rifle

When will this meme end. Cooper was a barely functioning alcoholic fudd by the time he dreamed up the most useless and impractical rifle concept in modern memory. Forward mounted scopes are literally the worst optic choice you could have and within seconds of using one you will realize how fucking BTFO you got by Coopers drunken autism.
>>
>>34395149
Why are you asking? It's very popular in europe but it's fairly expensive here and there are much better (and cheaper) options available for hunting.
>>
If you're going to build your own scoot rifle for laughs then why pick one of the most basic cartridges imaginable. Do something fun that still fills the role.
>>
>>34395752
It was pretty much the best option at the time, these days a red dot does the job fine, the concept isnt for a combat rifle, its for a light handy rifle that hits hard and can be used to take most large game
>>
I have a Remington 700 SPS Varmint in .308. It has a 26" barrel with a 1/12" twist. I bought it before really doing my research and now wish I would have bought something with a shorter barrel and 1/10" twist so I could shoot some heavier bullets at long range while having a more compact package.

The main range I shoot goes out to 700 yards and I can shoot 168gr Sierra Match Kings at that range ezpz. For this reason im in no hurry to buy a different rifle (either .308 with tighter twist rate or different caliber thats better at long range). I have also purchased some 175gr SMKs to reload and try out. I've thought about cutting my barrel down to 20 or 22" and getting it threaded while im at it. I've watched a video of someone who did this, with the exact same rifle i own, and his accuracy improved with 175gr SMKs. Now my questions are:
>Is this a dumb idea?
>has anyone done this?
>did this youtube dude just get lucky with his improved accuracy?
>what length would be better 20 or 22"?
>>
>>34397676
If you have your barrel cut, re-crowned, and threaded by a reputable company, you should be fine. For how much money you're going to drop into altering your rifle you might be better off selling it and buying something else, especially if twist rate is a concern for you.

I just got a Tikka T3x CTR in 308 with a 1:11 twist and this thing will easily put round after round of 178 ELD-X's into one nice little hole at 200 yards. I don't see why 1:12 wouldn't be able to do the same. The only time I'd see you running into issues is if you're going over 200 grain bullets.

it's an ebay seller doing the service. It's $85 to cut and thread. They have really good feedback although most of it is for other products.

How much did you buy your Tikka CTR for? I like that rifle but it's usually about 1k around here.

I believe its currently the best value on the market in terms of accuracy and build quality.

Its a step above the mossberg mvp in fit and finish, and a step below the ruger in terms of cost.

I'm going to be honest and say this is certainly not a super light rifle, but it a non issue for me seeing as I bought into the scout rifle concept for the utility of good irons on a bolt gun. Peeps on this rifle are fantastic.

I got mine for $520 shipped in February, I believe savage is having a $100 dollar rebate on centerfires, theres never been a better time to go get one.

(Pic is accustock which I'm a big fan of over both mossberg and rugers current stock options)

>4. Should a SHTF scenario pop up I would most likely find .308 far easier than .30-06

.308 is a tad more common but people also tend to hoard it more than .30-06.

.308 is lighter so you can carry more of it; but .30-06 is a bit more powerful.

If its a project, I'd go with .30-06. You can buy .308 scout rifles; but a .30-06 would be more of a novelty, plus you already have other guns chambered in it.

Nope. .308 is still tacticool, .30-06 is not. The only compelling argument to not use .30-06 is because of action length.

I don't mind the weight, either. And I don't know if I'm quite ready to put cash down on a Ruger, especially since from what I can see, they only have ONE scout rifle with an 18" barrel in .308.

Thanks for the answer, you pretty much filled me in on all I wanted to know about it.

why? is the 243 any good? I don't own a long rifle and was recommended this by the guy at bass pro shops when i was checking out guns
>>
>>34405389
>is the .243 any good?
Yes. Very accurate, very flat shooting, capable of 1200m supersonic range from a 24" barrel even when loaded to mag length with the heavier HPBT match bullets, high SD and BC, mild recoil, sufficient for all North American game except grizzlies and moose (and still kills a fair few of them every year in emergency situations).

I hunt everything from prairie dogs to caribou with mine, and I've killed a cow elk and a large sow grizzly with it as well (although the grizz was a gimme shot destroying a nuisance bear under orders from a rancher).
>>
>>34400742
>but .30-06 is a bit more powerful
They are so fucking close that you will not be able to tell a difference on anything living. Depending on brand and bullet weight the .30-06 has between 0 and 120 feet per second higher MV. That's within the standard variance of same bullet weights between different brands for any one caliber.
