FFS, can Raytheon make anything that works?

>The Super Hornet locked onto the Su-22 "Fitter" and launched the Military's most advanced short-range air-to-air missile, which promptly missed.
>According to CNN, the Navy Super Hornet locked onto the Su-22 Fitter at a range of 1.5 miles. The Super Hornet launched an AIM-9X, and the Syrian pilot loosed flares to lure the infrared guided missile away from his fighter. The trick worked, and the American missile missed. The Super Hornet then launched an AMRAAM missile which, using radar guidance, is unaffected by flares. This time the Fitter went down.
Pretty sure that AMRAAM was worth more than a 40 yr old Su-22 but fuck the taxpayer right?
I have an uncle that works for the navy as a weapons tester, he says Raytheon makes garbage but since they're basically a monopoly we have to buy their broke shit. God help us if we get into an air fight with Russia or China.

Just because CNN said that flares are what caused the sidewinder to miss doesn't mean they're right, dumbass. There are a hole lot of things that have to happen for a missile to hit its target, rejecting countermeasures is just one of them.

Are you retarded?

So your arguments, in order are:

1) The AIM-9x (sidewinder) is shit because it is a heat seeking missile that can be defeated by flares

2) the AMRAAM which is radar guided is shit because although it can't be defeated by flares it is too expensive to ever fire in anger because muh tax dollars.

3) the Navy is stupid because it tried the CHEAPER missile first and only deployed the expensive AMRAAM when it became clear the Sidewinder wouldn't hit it's mark.

What would you have the Navy do? Just let it's missiles rot because they are too expensive? We already BOUGHT the missile, it's a sunk cost you mouth breather. Might as well use it to dick slap some uppity little Syrian shitstains.
>>
>>34389501
Do you even understand how flares work? Do you think that if you throw enough money into it, a missile automatically "learns" how to defeat flares?
>>

This isn't battlefield where all flares are the same. IR missiles can be taught to see different wavelengths of light to ignore flares and target engines. For our most advanced Aim9, it should be the case, but guess not. Maybe Russia gave Assad their latest flares.
>>
>>34390122
the reason this is such a big deal is because everyone is used to pidorashka technology being garbage and getting smashed with ease, the "issue" here is that an american missile (doesnt specify model) was bested by flare. it is a man bites dog moment.
>>

>AIM-9X
Still no actual proof that it was an AIM-9X, this is also meaningless information without knowing the situation the missiles were launched in.

>>
>>34389448
Calling it a miss is a stretch. It was defeated by the appropriate counter measure. Heat Seeking missiles are defeated by flares when launched correctly.

The AMRAAM destroyed the aircraft but the pilot ejected safely, I believe.

But it's not really a miss for the AIM-9, a miss would be if it failed to lock against a target not deploying flares

Precisely this.

The implications of an AIM-9X missing against a 30 year old plane are pretty damning. The argument has been made that F-35 doesn't need to turn because it has all aspect missiles. If these missiles can't targets, how will the F-35 deal with threats?

>>34391770
Yet most engagements still tend to happen WVR. Don't get me wrong, BVR is VERY important because in an actual war, first shot first kill. However, I think engagements like this are going to be more common. F-35s are going to be flying like this Super Hornet. It will be flying in shared airspace, not contested, when it needs to shoot.

>>34391921
>>34392437

Pulse doppler radar has been upgraded to AESA.

New data modems and information sharing.

GPS integration. For a while, pilots were flying with early model hiking GPSs. Before that, it was primarily inertial navigation systems.

AIM-120A-D compatibility. The first AMRAAMs didn't enter service until 1991, after the Gulf War. AIM-7 Sparrow was the Eagle's primary weapon until then.

ECM is always kept quiet, for good reason. It would be foolish to think that it has gone without upgrading since the 80s.

Rocks kill is still a kill.
i.e. forcing another aircraft to maneuver into the ground, whereupon he dies. happened twice in the gulf war. one was an EF-111 that suckered am Iraqi Mirage into killing himself. the other an Eagle which similarly killed a Fulcrum.
