I seem to remember someone somewhere wanted to make an SF version of the CH-47 to be a mini AC-130 with longer loiter.
I believe it would have had a couple of 7.62 miniguns, a 20mm minigun/autocannon and the 40mm bofors or something to that effect.
But I don't think it ever worked.

I can't decide between these 3.
The Sea King is just an excellent workhorse, semi-amphibious, and iconic in military and rescue operations. And British,
I just like the Hind. Probably thanks to Metal Gear.
The Super Stallion is a very nice-looking aircraft, and one of the largest. Another formidable iconic workhorse, this time American.

I flew in a Canadian one for an exercise. It was a nice ride honestly, but that may have been because it was brand spanking new. The CH46 however is different. I have to ask, how useful are rockets? Every time I see a video of a plane or helicopter shooting them, they look like they're barely stabilized, and the explosions don't look that big. And most videos seem like "look what it can do" type videos.
Are rockets really used that often in combat? Like in all the desert fun times of the last decade and a half were they responsible for a large amount of kills? or in Vietnam?

american rockets have a 10m burst radius and a 50m lethality radius. they are an area weapon system. the aiming cursor for rockets is shaped like an i-beam and they will land somewhere on the i. they are used quite often, they are also different types, point detonating ones, flechette rockets, white phosphorus, illumination rockets.

My dad and some other of his army buddies, my friend Larry who was a UH-60 crew chief, and this MSG who I know all refer to them as SHIThooks. Was going to post this. No position or unit was ever lost when they had chinook gunship support. They even dropped napalm close in when needed. Too bad they were needed more for logistics than gunship support when the war ramped up because they were a great gun platform.

Time is money bromigo, and any company big enough to afford a helicopter in the first place is gonna have people crunching numbers and trust me, greed/profit drives everything at those levels. If the helicopter wasn't the more cost effective option, there wouldn't be a helicopter. People like us spend hundreds, or thousands of dollars on things we think are cool. Companies don't spend tens or hundreds of thousands on things they think are cool

Crashed at high altitudes, Americans contracted civillian operated mi-26 to lift the wreck out
Prototype of Chilean Light Attack Helicopter.
During the 80s a weapon factory owner came out with the brilliant idea of transforming a 206 into an attack helicopter (cause that had never been done before). It actually worked, the fuselage was lightened and the cockpit was remodeled in order to provide extra armor for the pilot.
The prototype was sent to USA for certification, where it was requisitioned arguing it could be exported to Iraq. The end.

>>34404609

>>34404708
was that because the tech was bad back then or did they just have less shit to power?
>>34404235
Because they're chubby and squat.
>>34404742
Because they thought that you don't need to shut down the engine while on mission and one APU costs less than 25.
Besides, 15 kilos saved on an APU means they get to carry 50 kilos more of cargo or fuel.
CUTE

>>34404589
I was a passenger in the mi-8.
I was a young kid, thinking it would be cool. If only i knew how horrifying, menacing and very very loud it would be.
It felt to me like a smelly small buss and sounded like cannons firing.
The shaking bruised my buttocks, which can happen if you don't know how to sit properly. The blades spinning disoriented me as they flew above me when i was entering. The smell of sweat, old leather and aviation fuel made me sick. The engine — loud like a bomb — gave me a temporary form of PTSD. For at least an hour after flying the beast just a few times, I was anxious and irritable.
>>34404924
Yeah, only the pilot died.
>>34405022
I guess its all they could have done in the end.
You fall like a sack of potatoes from the sky, there is nothing to do but try and control the fall as much as you can.
I hate seeing footage of helicopter crashes, military or commercial.
They are falling and they know that they will die, its fucked up to watch.
If only every helicopter had the same ejection system as the KA does, with the exploding rotor blades and an ejection seat going off after the blades are gone. Its a genius invention and it wouldnt hurt to put it on helicopters in general. Except for transport helicopters.
>>34405049
Helicopters don't fall like a sack of potatoes, under normal circumstances they can auto-rotate and archive a soft landing.
The problem appears when you get yourself into a situation in which you can't archive autorotation, that is low speed and low altitude, as a pilot you should avoid that, that's why is retarded to perform those maneuvers at such low altitude and they payed the price for it.

Japanese recon helicopters.
Does anyone outside of the UK like the Lynx?
>>34411372
Yep, pretty sure they're derivatives of the Comanche project
>>34411617
nope, Japan went at it alone as Mitsubishi, Kawasaki and Fuji all submitted bids for the scout heli program. It wasn't meant as a stealth heli, but just a regular scout heli. The two programs are almost identical in that both the JSDF and the US army wanted to replace their existing scout helis (which where the OH-6's) with a new heli that could also supplement other helicopters with a limited amount of weaponry. The Kawasaki stayed more true to the scout role as it only had four pylons for stingers, whereas the comanche acted more like a bridge between the scout and the attack heli(could fit 4 hellfires or 8 stingers).
The Kawasaki is also not meant to be a stealth heli and simply a light scout heli.
TLDR; no, they just look the same.
