And yeah, an AR15 is generally better, but the reason the AR15 is cheap now is that the patents expired and for the past decade or so, everyone and their mom has had a go at it, so you have this massive economy of scale.

Go back to the 1970's and look at the prices for a Colt SP1, those were not as cheap as an M&P-15 is now.
