Tell me about the 5906
I rarely hear anything about it
>>
>>34374108
It's the second best gun of all time, after the 39-2
>>
>>34374108
It is a handgun
>>
>>34374108
I like the way they look.
They don't make them any more.
I kind of want one, but I want other things more.
>>
>>34374108
Might be my favorite looking gun ever.
>>
>>34374108
>Tell me about the 5906
IT'S ABSOLUTELY FUCKING AWESOME!!!!!!
If you pull it apart it looks like an art deco masterpiece.
It comes from a time when S&W didn't have shit QC.
It shoots REALLY NICE!
IT'S THE BEST GUN EVER MADE!
Old fudds that know best from decades of shooting will often be seen carrying the S&W 5906.
You don't need more bullets than it holds!
FUCK YEAH!!!!
>>
>>34374108
>Weighs like a fucking boat anchor
>Magazine disconnect
>15+1
>Mediocre trigger with long travel and heavy as shit in DA
>Slidemounted decocker safety.

5904 takes care of the first problem, second is easy enough to remove, aftermarket 20 and 32 rounders are readily available, don't know how much can be accomplished with a trigger job.

Overall great pistols if you like DA/SA
>>
>>34374108
The 5903 is better
>>
Where do I buy one of these?
>>
>>34374528
on gb you dumb nigger
>>
>>34374108
Excellent gun that's a strong example of its time. Heavy, rugged, reliable, easy-shooting gun with dumb safety shit like the giant slide safety/decocker and mag disconnect.

>>34374454
>mediocre trigger with long travel and heavy as shit in DA
Did we shoot the same gun, anon? The break and reset on these guys are great, while the DA is smooth and couldn't be more than 9-10lbs.
I bought the 4506 used and it felt like it had trigger work done on it. the DA pull is buttery smooth and maybe 7-8lbs, so they can be cleaned up pretty decently.
>>
>>34374454

In 5 years /k/ will be expecting pistols to ship with 60-round drum mags.
>>
I don't think I've held an early smith auto loader I did't like.

The 469 comes close, but in the end it's not terrible.
>>
>>34374532
I don't like auctions
>>
i have a s&w 645. overbuilt like a real nigga, but da/sa is really fucking shitty. I still love it just for how ridiculously overbuilt it is, and aesthetics are top notch imo
>>
Store has a pc 4006 shorty forty with box and docs. Sort of interesting. Not sure if I really want. Can grab for 650.
>>
>>34374689
Garbage price. You can probably find them closer to 400-450 on a decent day unless you're autistic about documents and box.
>>
>>34375080
are you sure? I've been doing some research and searching "performance center 4006 forty shorty" and I'm seeing pricing ranging from 700-2000 sold on GB history. Some in the 600 range with no docs at other sites ten years ago. These seem to be special skus made for lew horton. Normal 4006 seem to range 250-400

A classic. It's basically the gun you think of when someone says "gun".
They're heavy as fuck, the ambi slide mounted safety is awkward, but they shoot well enough and look even better. I like mine a lot. Would like to get a 1006 or similar eventually if I can find one when I have the cash for it.
>>
>>34375171

Turd gen.
I carry a 5946 at work. The only good thing I have to say about it is that all the rookies with Glocks genuflect to senior cops carrying what's now become in their eyes a hardboiled veteran's gun.
Otherwise, the trigger pull is a mile long, the recoil is surprisingly bad for such a heavy gun, the extractors are remarkably fragile (on my third now), and it's of course, a boat anchor.

Also curved back grips a shit, if you really want one of these turds, get the straight back grip.
>>
>>34377197
>the extractors are remarkably fragile

I had and still have a raging hard on for these guns, but I can confirm this as fact.

I've owned two very well taken care of 3rd gen Smiths, and despite being otherwise flawless, the extractors were chipped and frequently double fed.

Replacement parts must be hand fit, and they'll eventually run out as they're not being made anymore. It broke my heart, but I sold them both because I couldn't trust them anymore.
>>
>>34374108
I got 2 police auction 5906s. The triggers and ramps already had work done.

I got a bud who makes match grade barrels and he hooked me up. I had to drill a water well for him but fair enough trade.

Anyhow they are excellent guns, a little scrawny fella would have teouble c&cing one, they are bulky. That being said they are nice and weighty which means you can magdump and keep your spread the size of a paper plate at 20 yards with a bit of practice.

I actually bought a bunch of different metal S&W pistols recently, I think I have 5 or 6. I think they are neat. I think I'll pick up a 5906TSW with a rail and call it a day. I really wanted to buy a sear when a few became available about 5 years ago but they were well over $20k. I always loved this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hsW8egiYi4

I have a couple submachine guns but something about the small package is supper cool.

They are heavy, but I will not be carrying mine and it shoots great. Trigger is fine, I like it but I always shoot SA. Mag disconnect can be removed, but I don't personally care enough to do it.
>>
>>34377256
I'm told my dept armorer that loading rounds directly into the chamber -will- damage the extractor, in probably just a couple of loadings.
That was the cause of my first extractor replacement - it chipped off about half of the leading tip of the extractor. I discovered this before it did a qualification cycle of 100 +P rounds without a hitch even with the damaged extractor. This was after about two years of use, with somewhere around 800 rounds of +P down the pipe.
Second time around, another 4 or 5 years and probably close to another 2000 rounds, I started getting FTEs every three or four rounds halfway through a qualification, and found that the extractor chipped one of its corners and the other was well on its way to rounding off afterwards.
It doesn't concern me too much, but I make sure to inspect it very closely every time I shoot it, before taking it back out on patrol. Certainly would carry something else if I were given a choice.

FWIW my armorer also says not to use steel case in the turd gens. I'm inclined to believe it's not just Fudd lore, by how he interrogates cops about what they were shooting when they broke their extractors.
>>
>>34374519

Meh, I have both and love them both. That said, the 5906 is DEFINITELY not a carry gun. It does have a great feel in the hand though. I would chose the 5906 first because I have better carry guns than the 5903 anyway. The 5906 is something different because of it's weight.

I can't for the life of me figure out why you would put those in fried rice.
>>
>>34374197
You can get FEG P9R. Not exacly same thing but looks fairly similar.
>>
Thinking of getting a 6904 or 6906 because they're sub 300 and neat. Opinions? Would be my only gun and my other consideration is a Beretta 92s or a 1st Gen 59.
>>
>>34374108
One of my coworkers carries one. More reliable than the glocks and sigs most of our guys carry, but that's probably down to user proficiency. Heavy as an anvil, but I carry a 1911, so who am I to complain? Shoots with perfectly functional accuracy.

All in all a decent gun if you don't mind the weight and find the ergos agreeable.
>>
It's a p. coo fun.
t. 5903 owner
>>
First non-.22 automatic handgun I ever fired. Pretty damn good for it's time. Though heavy by current standards is still pretty good.
>>
>>34378361
For sub 300? Definitely. They're smaller and decently lighter than their 59xx counterparts but still have reasonable capacity.

Although, as far as it being your only gun, I might say go with the Beretta or a CZ or something else that's still in production instead.

17 rounds is pretty standard for a 9 mil service handgun.
>>
>>34374108
Great gun.

Reliable, cheap, plenty of variants and mags out there. Accurate enough.

only real down side is the slide mounted safety.

Frankly im amazed that there wasnt more buzz about them and maybe a little aftermarket development when they were flooding the market.
>>
>>34378922
This, if a handgun has over 14 rounds in the mag I see no reason to complain. Anything over that is plenty, anything over 17 I start to worry about the ergonomics. Even though a double stack 2011 feels comfortable to me, I can't help but wonder what exactly you have to do to the grip geometry to cram that much dakka into the handle.

You can go buy a new 5946 from Cabela's right now for 600bux.
They're still in production for special orders, and it's not that rare for the overruns to hit store shelves.
Though with NYPD moving away from the 5946, I suspect this might be the last overrun, at least of the 5946. Good riddance anyway, 12lb NY trigger.

You need to see an optometrist and lurk more. 92s are never brought up on /k/ without someone mentioning how obviously sexy they are.
>>
>>34384478
You can get the right parts to convert them into a 5906 if you really care.
I wouldn't bite, though. S&W isn't making replacement parts, and I'm hearing they're "upgrading" ones they can't fix with replacement M&Ps. So much for the lifetime warranty! No reason to buy new if that's how they handle warranty issues now.
>>
Its heavier than any pistol should be. Feels like you're holding a tank. I love it but grading it by todays standards the average person will prefer something else.
