I need a nice, inexpensive home defense handgun. Revolver or automatic. I have a budget of under $500, and I'd like a very reliable and safe gun. As for caliber: 9mm or above. No meme guns. What do you have for me /k/
>>

Police Trade-in Glock 23 or M&P 40
>>
Glock 17
Sig P320
CZ 75
>>
Police or academy trade in glock 19.
Does everything from concealed carry to range queen for about $400-450.
>>

Ruger P89 and several hundred in ammunition. They're ugly and bulky but they are cheap and they eat garbage ammunition.
>>
>>34373205
Rock Island M206 revolver
>>
OP here again:
Glock: Why a 19 and not a 17? Size is no issue. Isn't .40 a meme caliber?

P89: How gross a P89 can I buy? I saw some attractively priced ones that looks like total shit?

Sig: While I'm shocked that there is a Sig that inexpensive, it is still pretty damn expensive.

>Rock Island M206 revolver

Why is it so tiny? Are full sized revolvers not inexpensive?

The only option.
>>
>>34373515
You could buy a really nasty looking Ruger P series and with some cleaning you'll have a capable pistol. Hell on GB right now there is a Ruger P85 with two magazines and it's original box for 199.99. Not bad for an all metal Wondernine with ambidextrous controls.

Going that route, I also suggest a Smith & Wesson 5906 and FEG P9R

>>34373476
He could buy like two for his budget.

>>34373522
Some like a smaller gun to carry.
The M200 has a 4" barrel and a larger grip.

Anyway, you don't need to look at one of those, you can do a lot better, they're more of a low budget option. If you want a revolver for under $500, the old Ruger Security Six can often be found $400 or even less, and in decent/good condition, they're built like brick shithouses. If you want it to be pretty, they're not hard to polish up either.
>>
>>34373721
Why in the fuck are you suggesting a Taurus shitbox for under $200 when he's good for a MUCH better gun?
>>
>>34373875
OP here, value is important. Unless there is a much better option, less cost is good. My dad has a Taurus revolver, and it seems okay.
>>
>>34373875
Not op but solid suggestion on the Taurus. 2-3 days of Range time and going through 300+ rounds to make sure a fire rm is solid is costly but important. Not to mention verifying the ammunition he is purchasing is good with the firearm. Also a good cleaning kits. Only a misinformed idiot would spend it all on a glock, buy 1 box of ammo and think he is good.
>>
>>34373920
>Unless there is a much better option
Than Taurus? For under $500? Without question.

Classic Firearms has Bulgarian Makarovs for $319.99. They're surprisingly solid guns.

>>
OP, go with the G17 police trade in. Cheap ammo, large magazine capacity, reliable, great value.
>>
>>34374109
It shouldn't be surprising how solid they are. Let me tell you all a story about my Makarov

>buy makarov for 300, came with loads of ammo and accessories
>didn't know how to maintain a gun
>the poor thing must have run dry for a year's worth of shooting
>only ever cleaned the barrel and inside of slide with toilet paper and some off-brand shit that was reddish-brown and smelled sweet like fruit
>then lent it to a friend because he moved into a part of town filled with spooks
>friend also did not know how to maintain it
>after a couple of years, in which time I had learned a lot about guns and maintenance, friend gives gun back
>it looked like it was covered in a light layer of rust, trigger was crunchy, grip lanyard actually had rust on it, safety took a lot of force to move
>I took it apart piece by piece, lubed and cleaned the ever loving FUCK out of this thing, the CLP that poured out of the barrel looked like the stuff you'd see in a sewer, even the magazines were coated in and out with residue
>thoroughly scrubbed the outside, turns out it was actually coated in DEAD HUMAN SKIN
>re-assembled, tested everything, and it's good as "new", functions flawlessly

The Makarov is a great first gun for people that don't know what they're doing, because this thing is certified retard-proof

Also looking for a first gun on a smaller budget.
Are derringers practical for self defense? I don't know how accurate a 9mm with a typical derringer barrel length would be compared to a compact handgun.
Also am I a hipster duchebag for wanting one? I feel like I am, I probably am; they look fun though.
>>
A full size Glock 9mm or a 6-shot (or 7) .357mag revolver. At least with the revolver you can leave it loaded without any wear on the magazine springs. Either one is double action and ready to go when you need it.
>>
>>34374208
Probably because they were made for drunken conscripts that were moved into an officer position
>>
>>34374258
Don't get a derringer. What is your budget?
>>
>>34374109
OP here. The heel mag release, bad trigger, and general oldness make wary.
>>
>>34373205
Star Model 30 Mi.
It's a Spanish made brick that shoots 9mm and works well.
>>
>>34373205
gently used cop trade in SW59 series.

will outlive cockroaches, good solid gun, overbuilt.

EAA Witness Steel 9mm (wonderfinish) with a .22 conversion slide. Two guns for one, basic frame is built to run 10mm on down, ergos are fantastic, sights are a little lacking for the 9, but easily swappable.
>>
>>34374387
Heel magazine release is ambidextrous and provides good retention; not hard to get used to

Other two are fair complaints
>>
>>34374371
400$ now, maybe 500-550$ by the end of July.
>>
>>34375238
You can do a shitload better than a Derringer, you could get a used M&P Compact or Glock 19 or something.

If you want something that's compact and flat, there's also Kahr pistols.
>>
>>34375428
I was looking at derringers because they piqued my interest. I know they're pretty far below optimal for a ccw. What are they even for nowadays?
>>
Canik's are cheap, reliable, and the trigger is amazing.

If you want one just because you want a Derringer, then by all means do, guns are a hobby after all, but if you want a carry gun, I would very much suggest an automatic or revolver, and then maybe the Derringer as a backup (ankle holster maybe?).
Doubletap Defense makes a very flat and sleek one in 9mm Luger and .45ACP, and I'd say this would be about as practical as they get. If you want something more stylish, there's Bond Arms

I would recommend against Magnums and other particularly high powered Derringers, they're very harsh in recoil, and somewhat accident prone (there's more than a few stories of people accidentally shooting a very high powered Derringer twice due to the recoil making it flip on them, and them accidentally pulling the trigger, some have been injured or killed by this).

For what it's worth, like 99% of all Defensive Gun Use never involve a fired shot (presenting lethal force is really good at scaring people away, it turns out), and the cases where shots are fired, it's rare for it to exceed 2, so statistically, a Derringer in say, .38 Special, a proven caliber, would absolutely be able to cut the mustard, realistically.
It's just that personally, I'd rather carry a five shot .38 snub or five-six shot .380 automatic for the same size and weight, and then be more safe than sorry.

Am the person who was responded to.
The smaller, ccw models don't seem to have manual safety, which makes me want to look elsewhere for a first gun.

Imagine a Glock, but flatter, sleeker and generally designed around being compacts and subcompacts.

They have a varied line, economy guns, mid tier guns, and deluxe guns (such as the steel framed K9, which has a further, fancier version).
>>
>>34375820
Understandable requirement, if you start getting more comfortable you can practice carrying with the safety off. I was looking at the CT9 for nice handy 9mm with a decent length barrel.

auto, police trade in glock

wheel gun Taurus 689. seriously. its cheap, made with old smith tooling and isnt something you'll miss when its sitting in a locker at the station for 6 moths getting ruined
>>
Not OP, but need help. Should I get a Beretta 92s or a S&W 6904 or 59? All cost around 300.
>>
>>34373672
Doesn't the P series get knocks for being inaccurate? Like, 12" spread at 7 yards? I was thinking of getting a P85 but was turned off by this.
>>
>>34376503
no experience with the 3rd gen smiths but i have a 92s. it works but is well worn...not a bad gun if you can handle the ergos and 3 mile long trigger pull. personally i hate it.
>>34376521
my p94 isnt the most accurate thing out there but its far from 12 inces even at 15 yards.
