It was my fathers and he gifted it too me. With the right ammo, I can shoot that thing all day long and have a blast. Use the wrong ammo though and it'll be a long range trip.

The right ammo makes all the difference. I tried PPU ammo in my Marlin 336C and it caused the action to stick because the primers are too soft, and the firing pin would get stuck on them.

Personally, I think the USPs are overrated. They are certainly not bad, but I don't think they deserve the hype that a lot of people give them. Also, that proprietary rail is shit. For H&K, I would put the VP9 and P30 above the USP, and I love the P226 above all of them, but I have a P226, so I'm biased.

I've owned a couple of both and in my experience the USP (especially in 9mm) tends to hold up better with high round counts ( small parts breakage, wear, etc). The USP is also massively overbuilt in 9mm, and the turbo recoil spring does make it very soft shooting.

The P226 is a finer overall pistol, though in my experience pickier with ammo, and has more small parts breakage with lots and lots of shooting.

In my personal experience the USP is the ultimate combat handgun. Whichever is better depends on your use.

Decent 39s with target sights are even harder to find

single stack with 8 or 9 rounds, they're amazingly pleasant guns to shoot and the fact S&W discontinued the whole series makes my heart break into tiny pieces.

Smith and Wesson 39's are not that hard to find, and old Smith semi-autos with those stupid-looking turret sights are also not rare. Most of the ones on the used market are police surplus or otherwise really beat up, but you can still find plenty of 39's in good condition. Now if you want to talk rare, try to find yourself a stainless HK USP Elite or a West German Sig Sauer P228 in original all nickel finish.

Originally that AK had a shitty Dragunov style stock from the Brady Bill era in the 90's. It was horribly uncomfortable. The Mako stock and grip are very comfortable, so I'm probably going to keep those. The quad rail I got for aesthetics since wood wouldn't go well with the new stock, but I am thinking of replacing it. Not sure though because it is more comfortable to shoot with a verticle grip. The 700 was a similar situation. I've had that rifle since I was 12, and the factory stock got pretty beat up over the years, so I wanted to replace it. At the time, I had limited income and that stock was one of the few in my price range. After I put it on, I was really disappointed with how ugly it is, but it is comfortable and pretty accurate with the aluminum pillar bedding, so other than aesthetics, there hasn't been any driving need to replace it.

Absolutely! I picked up a Marlin 336C recently, and there are about a dozen wheel guns and lever actions I want to buy, but I need to pace myself. I budget $1500 a month for guns, so it is just a matter of time before I have all those. For shooting, there is a range about an hour from me that goes out to 450 yards. It's nice, well-maintained range that only costs me $10 for the day.

What should I get next? They have police trade in USPs at a local gun shop, but they have that weird DAO trigger. How hard is it to change that in a USP? Also looking for more milsurp, maybe a cheap mauser like an m48 or a Turkish one, what should I be looking for?

It's funny because I don't see AR or AK owners being called cheap, and most decent rifles of each will start at $600-$700.

And as for ammo costs, 308 is actually probably the cheapest full rifle caliber currently available. Sure, you can buy 7.62x39 and 5.56 for 20 cpr, but 7.62x54r costs about 50 cpr at the low end. You can find steel-case 308 for 36 cpr online right now, which is a great deal if you want a big bang without shooting birdshot.

I made it with more time than it was worth and a dremel.
It's actually lighter than a polymer mag and fixes the problems with it not wanting to take the last two rounds.

I'm kicking myself for having done it to a Hungarian steel mag though...
