Actually, nobody should spend more than a few hundred dollars on self defense over the course of their lifetimes if we're being honest about the risk/reward balance. Cheap gun, some bullets, good deadbolts, hinges, and strike plates for the doors, and maybe some audible alarms for the windows and doors. Keep a tv on 24/7 for deterrence. Maybe get a dog.

Nobody needs a $600 gun unless they're fighting for a living, and some people who fight for a living have to use really crappy gear.

That's around the price of a very entry level AR and or a new Glock with aftermarket sights. You'll still need a light, ammo, mags, practice/training etc. If a Hi-Point or budget pump 12 gauge and a box of ammo is all you can afford, that's okay, but saying that being better prepared in terms of training and gear wouldn't pay off is asinine. Is it rare to be the victim of violent crime? I guess that depends on what you do for living, where you live, who you associate with, etc., but all those statistics are irrelevant when you're robbed at gunpoint or your door is kicked in.

You will pay about $100 for the fun itself but that and a box of (preferably hot) 9mm and you will be good to go.
Anything cheaper isn't going to really afford you any legitimate protection and Hi-points are perfectly acceptable guns just ugly as hell.
Use hot ammo through as it feeds more reliably and don't fuck with hollow points in cheaper semi autos.

Look I get being poor. But minimum buy in here is 200 for a hi point, but if you're thinking home defense, turn that 200 into a shotgun. Nothing I want to shoot with a handgun I wouldn't rather hit with a long gun.
