Everything just looks so off in the The Hobbit compared to LOTR where almost everything was a practical effect.

Everything was CGI. The team didn't have any time to prepare so they had to go with what they had. You could see the absolute love and passion that went into making LOTR, both in the movie itself and behind the scenes footage, but in The Hobbit there's hardly any of it. Ian McKellen goddamn cried on the set because of how fucking awful it all was and how fake the acting involved was.

In the LotR series there was lots of CG but they also used a lot more actors to flesh the battle scenes out.
IIRC Jackson and team had almost a decade of prep time for LotR compared to a few years for The Hobbit.

It was a 'time is of the essence' cash grab while people were still fondly remembering LotR. After seeing the first two hobbits in theaters I cared so little about the third I watched it on an airplane and haven't seen it since.
